#topnine mending/altering for 2023! I do so much mending and altering over the course of each year, and it’s definitely as important as having a newly made top 9. I love being able to extend the life of things we already own. From left, top to bottom. -Added an elastic waist to this #thriftedfashion top -The button fell off these #thrifted shorts almost immediately, so I sewed a new one on. -Repaired the popped underwire on one of the #afimaya bras I made. -Hemmed my jeans. -Replaced the elastic straps on my husband’s #carhartt snow pants. -Fixed the ripped off pocket on my daughter’s #kuspuk. -Patched so many jean knees! -Fixed a snap that popped off on this nursing top. -Replaced the bodice of the #s9802 teddy I made with the bodice from #m7964 #alaskasewist #memade #mending #alter #thrift #afimayabra #isew

Details for #s9802. This is a wearable muslin, and I’m moderately happy with it. I really, really like the bottom half. When I first saw the pattern, I was skeptical of the flounce and French/thong/panty cut combination, but I am now sold! It’s very fun, pretty, feminine and looks great. I will definitely borrow the bottom half to put with other bodices in future. Unfortunately, I ran into issues with the bodice. This pattern is designed for small busts. The lace piece is >>exactly the same size for every size<<, which means the amount of coverage on both cleavage and side boob is going to vary drastically by bust and body size. On me, it cuts much further over than it does on the envelope cover shots. I knew from tissue fitting there was no way that lace piece would be tall enough for me, so I added 1 ½” in height to that piece (1 ¼” of finished height since I used fabric, not lace, and added clear elastic and folded over the top edge by ¼”), and it covers me similarly to the sample shots. There is also no shaping at all for the bust. The seam at the base of the bust is completely straight. Additionally, the pattern calls for only 3/8” FOE, even though the sample shows two different widths used. There are no FGM for the teddy. I took my own at the waist, and there is approx. 5” of ease there, so I sized down two sizes. No notches on the lace piece bottom seam. The instructions say not to stretch the elastic, but I find I get a better fit when I stretch it slightly. I removed 2 1/8” in length from the front and back pieces. I added extra SA to the crotch and added a snap closure with sheer cup lining in the seam to stabilize it. I used self-fabric binding instead of FOE. It’s 3 3/8” wide and then folded in half. I hemmed the flounce rather than finish with FOE. I have left the straps as a halter rather than sewed to the back. I’m not sure if I will keep this. Most of my other lingerie makes are bra or bralette based, and this basically hangs. I might cut it at the waist and adding a new bodice from some other pattern because I do really like the lower half. Trying my hand at a whole new type of sewing thanks to @mmadalynne 💖 Making the #S9802 was outside of my usual wheelhouse, but it was so much fun. Made minimal modifications to fit my body: shortened the straps and added some length to the crotch. #simplicitypatterns #sewingproject ##handmadeclothing #handmadelingerie #memadelingerie #madalynneintimates #madalynnexsimplicity

A new robe @simplicitymccallsuk S9802 from @mmadalynne in a very busy @torrettotessuti silk and cotton print. Loungewear has become a must with this awful weather we keep having. Added some non stretch lace from prodentelle. Doubled the fabric so it wasn’t that see through and finished all with french seams for a neat inside. #s9802 #mmadalynnexsimplicity #sew #robe #seam #seamstress #loungewear #memade #memadewardrobe #couture #cousette #garderobefaitmain #dublinsews #parisienne #dublin #parisianindublin

This is my old make of #s9802 with a fresh new bodice! I mentioned when I initially made 9802 that I quite liked the bottom half, but I really didn’t care for the bodice and its bust issues. So I chopped 9802 off at the waist and whipped up a new bodice - #m7964, with some modifications. I sewed the bodice strips to the bottoms first, letting the edge extend the width of the SA past the edges of the bottoms (the bottoms scoop down in the back instead of being straight across). I then wrapped the part that stuck out around the edge of the finished bottoms and sewed that up continuing to hem the entire side. I only used the front neckband piece. I kept the original width in the middle but sewed the original 9802 ties to the ends and tapered the neckband in at the ends to be the same width as the ties. I gathered the bodice pieces down approximately 1/3 smaller than indicated on the pattern. I just like it better this way. I also made the front opening larger. It’s sewn up from the waist about half as high as indicated on the pattern. I did not interface the neckband and did not use elastic. Of note, I’m used to Big 4 patterns including some info on how to sew with knits. The only thing this pattern says on that subject is “stretch fabric evenly in front and back of needle while stitching,” which is outdated info that doesn’t reflect how most people sew with knits today. I used a zigzag and did not stretch the fabric. I don’t care for some of the pattern markings. You’re supposed to sew the bodice pieces between the circles (located on the seamline) on the neckband. Instead, I cut notches at the edge of the fabric so that I didn’t have to mark the circles with a pencil or tailor tacks. Much easier and faster! I sized down one size because this was a lingerie piece, but I would probably cut my true size if I was making it as a suit. On that note, I’m not sure I will ever make this as a suit because of the bust support or rather the lack thereof, which is simply a function of the style, not a pattern issue. I’m not sure if it would be better in swimsuit material, tighter and with elastics. This #frankenpattern result is a big improvement on the original!

I just bought fabric (I KNOW) so we gotta sell some patterns this week, okay? I couldn't help it, @missouriquiltco pitched something from Art History 101 and....I was weak. I've also been reading the Elvis Cole & Joe Pike series and since I'm me, I need to not read one or two, I need to read the whole thing sequentially so that's also not free. (I'm going to get a library card in Albuquerque in April when we go up for @gatheringofnations so then I can borrow ebooks, okay, I swear). Shoutout to YarnBeth on Etsy, you are awesome, the internet is actually worth it sometimes. #S7280 Boring? Sure, but go without and you'll be getting a ticket for indecent exposure ( #freethenipple ) and written up in the local rag. If yours wasn't bought out by venture capitalists, anyway. $5.50 #S2602 View 1's pose suggests that she wishes her slip had pockets but also OHMYGODyouguys this pattern.
