Certainly one of the prettiest tops I made this year😍. One of my goals this year was to sew with a more challenging fabric like mesh, chiffon etc. I came across this fabric at Joann’s in the clearance section and I immediate bought it to sew a high neck top.This pattern had been recommended by a lot of YouTubers so I had to try it out and I must say they were right because it fits perfectly. I decided to size up as it seems older patterns tend to run smaller and I’m glad I did because it has just the right amount of ease. I’m looking forward to wearing this top next spring. Whilst the most sustainable garment is the one you already own, it is difficult not to make if you’re a maker! One way of sewing garments in a more sustainable way is to #refashion clothes that aren’t being worn, to use unwanted or old fabric items (curtains, sheets and tablecloths for example) and old fabric found in your stash, thrifted, or bought from sellers. A couple of weeks ago I took part in a lovely Sewcial in Harrogate, met up with like minded sewists, did some sewing and found the swap table! A dangerous moment! Of course this lovely striped rib called to me and I couldn't wait to turn it into a sweater. I used the very versatile Simplicity 8982 and sewed View C and I will definitely use this pattern again. I found the rib a bit wayward to straighten, maybe I should have pressed it better or not prewashed the fabric, but I got there in the end. I really like the tight, long cuff which I had to downsize to fit. I'm not keen on baggy cuffs!! I'm now looking forward to the next Sewcial, I just need to come up with a nice project for the day and go through my stash again for more swap table candidates. A second version of #S8982 #Simplicity8982 and my first time sewing stretch lace. I have learned so much, primarily that it is *incredibly* hard to cut stretch lace on grain. It may be that this specific fabric is especially finicky and eager to "relax" into the wrong shape: the bottom hem looks wonky on the hanger but correct when worn. I'm really glad I chose a simple pattern and cannot imagine trying to sew fabric this squishy into anything more complicated. The collar alone was a nightmare. Still have to decide how I want to finish the seams, but one upside to this material is that it doesn't ravel so I can wear it like this for a bit. Or at least I'll be able to do that once I pull several thousand tiny pieces of tissue paper out of the seams. Another important lesson: invest in wash-away stabilizer if you're sewing stretch knits, keep the tissue paper trick for straight stitches only. #sewing

This is a top and skirt in clearance ribbed knit from @joann_stores. I saw a friend of mine wearing a ready-to-wear sweater with a big ruffle and I was totally inspired. I used #m7977 which is designed for woven fabrics and I’ve made several times before. To adapt for knit, I sized down, added a crew neckline, ribbed cuffs, and ribbed hem. I also added an inch to the ruffle and did a lettuce edge. The skirt is my favorite knit pencil skirt pattern #s8982. I teach a weekly vocal technique class at a local private school. As a reward for finishing all of the strip piecing for my quilt the other week, I treated myself to some @truebias #rileyoveralls which were fun to make! They make a very comfy weekend outfit, paired with a #s8982 mock neck. I used 8 oz hickory stripe denim from @boltfabricpdx which they kindly gave me some extra because there was a bit of staining in parts. Luckily it mostly washed out, so now I have enough for another smaller project! I was very influenced to buy the striped denim after seeing @rickyandthecrafts fab jeans! 📏 size 0 (which is for a one inch smaller than my hip measurement) but it seemed like a lot of people on here sized down. No mods besides lengthening the legs about an inch and adding the carpenter pocket and double front knees. I left off the belt loops too. My natural color topstitching thread pretty much blends in. Still scrap busting! 🧵🪡This week, I made 3 items. Made the very cool and stylish crop pant by @beautejadore #Knowmepatterns #ME2052. This make was very nice, the instructions were clear, I will definitely make these pants 👖 again in denim, probably. The main material is a soft brown corduroy. I serged a bunch of little scraps and sewed them on top of each other, then just cut out the pattern piece and sewed that to the pant. It was a fun make. Thank you, Nikki! I got so many compliments when I wore these out yesterday. 💃🏿 Then I made the #chelseahat by @fionahesford_sewgirl found on Etsy. This hat was so easy. I didn't even look at the instructions, but I did have to grade the hat bigger (For my enormous head, and all my dreads 💁🏿‍♀️) This is my favourite hat so far because of the shape and these are the colours I love ❤️ made out of corduroy and thick wool lining. ❄️ Lastly 🎄I made a simple skirt from a soft knit scrap material from the bin. I couldn't even tell you where I sourced it from. It's been in my bin forever. Happy sewing Monday! Not much to see here- just a palate cleanser in between more complex fabrics and patterns. This is my umpteenth version of #s8982 view c but with the neckline of view b. This time I made it with a gorgeous striped cotton jersey and matching cotton rib knit from @letoffefabrics. I purchased a fabric bundle which had small cuts of a bunch of casual cotton fabrics including this fun stripe. I had the rib knit in my stash so that worked out nicely. Because I have made this top with lots of different fabric types with varying degrees of stretch, I guess I never noticed that the shoulder area doesn’t fit quite right. At least not with fabrics with minimal stretch like this one! I had to let out the shoulder seam another 3/8 inch all around to give me some room. When I really look at it, I need less room in the front shoulder area and more in the back. Alas. I will fix next time! I’m so lucky as the fabrics distributor, Clare, lives only a few miles from me so I can go pick up!!!!🥳 ✂️pattern - a complete mish mash if I’m honest - the main body is loosely based on New Look #k6428, the long sleeve cuff is from Simplicity #s8982 and the upper sleeve section from Simplicity #k8921. Why these elements? I wanted a short tunic with statement sleeves and I love these long cuffs! Don’t drag in my food for one!!!😅 I added the belt as an afterthought and feel it enhances the retro vibe. The buckle came from my lovely crafty friend Jo (@stitchycatlady26) so thank you Jo! 🤩 I’ve still a bit left so I will think about what else to make. 🤓 Label from @cosyclubhandmade - so sweet! I flew too close to the sun on this one, friends. In the end, it all worked out, but my original vision was too ambitious for the constraints of this fabric. Despite its challenges, the simplicity of the style I ended up with really lets the fabric texture shine. This fabric was gifted from Minerva. It’s a knit with a bonded lace overlay. My original vision was to hack a top with a small ruffle neckband and cuffs like I’d been seeing in ready-to-wear this winter. I used my old reliable Simplicity #S8982 for the base pattern. I then cut long neckband and cuff pieces and attempted to gather and attach them. It did not go well. The fabric is actually on the heavier side for a knit, especially combined with the lace. It would work very well for bottoms, but my vision for ruffles was brought down by the weight of this stuff when gathered. The neckband was so stiff and heavy when gathered that it just flopped over on itself, and the cuffs proved very difficult to attach. In the end, I abandoned both, because the real beauty of this fabric is that it can elevate a simple pattern. I came out of this project with a lovely top that pairs well with dressy trousers or more casual jeans. Happy sewing Sunday! Winter is in full swing here in Chicago and so is the need for warm, fuzzy sweaters! #s8982 to the rescue (again!). This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite patterns. Especially with my more modern cropped version here with added waistband. I used a super fun faux fur from @voguefabrics which was a mess to work with (think hair everywhere!!). It was also hard to mark, so I am not entirely sure that I got the front and back right with the sleeve insertion. I wasn’t able to mark the notches clearly, and when I wore this the first time, it was a little snug in the neck area leading me to believe either I put the neckband in mixing up front and back or the sleeves. Alas, it still works and is super cute, so I will forgive myself! The skirt is #m7983 in faux leather also from @voguefabrics. It is going to be in regular rotation this winter as well! I know I have been really quiet,  but I have been sewing. I just haven't been sharing my makes. That needs to end. Today, I am sharing an outfitI made a while back. It is a simple gathered skirt with a waistband and a zipper down the back. I love the flower print and flow of this skirt so much! The top is #S8982. I am digging the yellow and am thinking  I need a short sleeve for the warmer temperatures. I completed my vacation wardrobe for my vacation back in January. I also updated my lounge wear now. Happy sewing Sunday all! I wore this outfit to school this week and then again to a 70s themed birthday party last night. When I wore it the first time my husband said I looked very 70s so I figured it would suffice :) The pants are my tbt #v9282 that I have made countless times and am always tweaking for the perfect fit. I usually use fabric with a lot of drape for this pattern but decided to try this structured corduroy after @vanedugo in my sewing class making the same pair out of this fabric. I immediately went to @voguefabrics and got some for my own pair! We will need a twin pic when she finishes hers! I ended up needing to let out the rear crotch seam about 3/8 inch because it was giving me a serious wedgie! Now I like the more jeans-like fit. I need to scoop out the pattern at the rear a bit next time to create more of a longer crotch curve in the back. For fabric with more drape I will drop the crotch down 1/2 inch. I also added a waistband which I do to all my pairs but always forget to mention. I think they look much more polished with a waistband. The top is #s8982 view c with the crew neck from view b. It is made with a stripes French terry from @moodfabrics. Both pieces are in regular rotation in my wardrobe. Happy sewing Sunday! I read in my @peoplemagazine the other week that knit sets were very in style. I thought that was funny because as a sewer, I don’t pay a lot of attention to current trends, but I had just finished this knit set coincidentally! I have made many versions of #s8982 view c but had never tried the full set. When I was shopping @voguefabrics this fall, I found this crazy acrylic knit which was so so soft and fun. I had to have it! It helped that it was only $7 a yard! I initially made the longer skirt, but then wasn’t sure which style suited me best- the long or the short. I pinned up the skirt and sent pics of both views to my fashionable and sewing pals. The vote was split down the middle. So I made both!! I love the versatility that sewing gives me- and sometimes it even saves me money. Both looks cost less than $35. Not bad! Alterations for this version: - I cropped 5 inches off the length of the top to make a version to go with all my high waisted pants. - I used the waistband from the skirt and cut an additional one for the bottom of the sweater. This is from some ponte I had in my stash - Because the ponte is stretchy, I eliminated the elastic the pattern called for in the waistband. After wearing it, I may need to add it to the skirt eventually to help stabilize the waist. - Because this knit is so fuzzy and crazy, I needed to create the illusion of a waist by adding black to the top of the skirt and bottom of the sweater. The original version was way too much bulk at my waistline!! I am super happy with the result and have worn the sweater several different ways since. Yay for sweater weather! Happy Sunday friends! Cannot believe the long weekend is coming to an end. Last week I sewed my first jeans, Simplicity 8701. I was rather nervous to tackle jeans so started with this wide legged 70’s inspired jeans. Made some length adjustments to crotch and leg length to better accommodate my 5’ 2 inch height. They came out fairly well for the first go at it but will be slimming the legs some for the next pair. Teamed the jeans with a Simplicity 8982 in a stretch corduroy top for a casual outfit.
