When I first saw #s9920 I immediately knew I wanted to hack it into a sweetheart/heart neckline. I mean, that triangular point detail is just calling for it 🩷. I put it off for a while because I was kind of nervous to get started - I tend to stay away a bit from fitted garments, as I require a lot of adjustments to get the right fit on top and I just usually prefer looser fit or stretchy clothes. It took me awhile to get the shape right for the heart neckline 😅. And in my attempt to make sure it fit, I may have overcompensated and made it a little toooo tight - Im getting some pull lines that I don’t love, even though it’s surprisingly not really showing up as much in all the photos as it does in real life. But overall I’m happy with how it came out! I may consider this one a nice wearable muslin, and attempt a second version to perfect it. We shall see 🩷🧡. Say hello to my neon confetti dress (aka S9920 )! As soon as I saw this fabric, I knew it was destined to be a dress with a fitted bodice and stand up collar. I didn’t always envision the cut outs, but this Simplicity pattern (I made view C) brought the extra oomph. Fit note: I graded up at the waist (my standard mod), but it turned out far too loose—ended up unpicking everything and taking it in at the sides. If you’re similar, skip grading up at the waist! Construction wise the instructions were a bit muddled. The collar was only referenced once with conflicting instructions. I followed the line drawing and had to recut the collar after realising that it was incorrect. My collar tip: After sewing main and lining of bodice together, baste the neckline. Before installing the zipper, sew the top long edge of the inner and outer collar pieces right sides together. Iron seam allowance up on bottom edge of inside collar piece. Attach raw bottom edge of outer collar to neckline on main fabric side. Install zip. Finish short side edges of collar by folding so inner and outer collar are right sides together, sandwiching the zipper tape in between (don’t open out the ironed up inner collar edge, stitch over it folded!). Snip corner and turn collar right side out. Repeat on other side, and then close the inside collar edge how you prefer (I machine stitched close to the ironed up edge). Despite the detours, I love how this turned out. It fits like a dream—just waiting for some warmer weather (and the right occasion) to show it off! Finally conquered sewing pattern #S9920! It was love at first sight from the moment I laid eyes on the waist cut-outs, a few minutes later I’d tracked down the pattern and downloaded the PDF files. The "optional top-stitching" was never optional for me - it's an absolute must. every. time!  The pattern called for a light fabric like cotton, linen or poplin but I went rogue and used denim 😜. I briefly regretted my choice when I had to tackle some insanely thick waist seams (we're talking hand cranking my machine over them) but it was totally worth it for that next-level skirt drape! I made my regular ‘Big4’ size based on my bust measurement but had to take out a lot at the waist so the cut-outs sat flat and didn’t gape. Maybe next time I’ll try a size down. It was pretty easy to do the alteration as one of the last steps is a big ol' zipper right down the centre back which is where I took out a big wedge. I enlisted my mum to help fit it on me before sewing the zipper in as it's pretty bloody hard to pin while trying it on and then taking it off again. Got there in the end and I couldn't be happier with the fit!
