I’m cramming: I need an 1875-1920 costume for an event next weekend. I don’t have one, but I found this image of McCall 7886 (1917) online and it’s a) simple and b) very similar to a 1910s-inspired dress I hacked about 10 years ago from my old standby #Simplicity9880. I’m not using the inset belt so I need to lengthen the bodice a bit, and it needs some other refinements. The fabric is a period-inaccurate cotton/viscose that I have in my stash but that is about the same scale and only one color off from the ad. For some reason pinning the yoke is the part of constructing the cloak I've struggled with the most. Look at all of those pins! I'm getting so close! After I get the yoke attached I have to shorten it. I want it to be an inch or two shorter than floor length on me, unlike the pattern version. I also plan on adding placket pockets to the inside which I've never done before. This cloak is full of many sewing firsts for me. It's been a great way to push myself and learn. Back to working in the cloak. It's s l o w going though since the bulk of it will be hand sewn from this point. Putting the clasp on has been the part I've looked forward to most. It's rough sewing through all of the layers. To cope I got myself a shiny new fingertip thimble since my nails are now long. (Peep that manicure tho). Also pictured is the reason work is slow going. Getting fabric out in my house is pretty much guaranteed to summon at least one cat begging for loves. Bug cuddles can be rare though so I'll take every moment with her I can.
