Sometimes they just photograph better than they look IRL #v1951

This is my navy crepe version of the Rachel Comey Dante dress pattern from Vogue. I cut a straight size 14 and after trying the finished dress on I probably could have cut a 12. ⁣ ⁣ I skipped the self bias binding and opted for packaged bias tape as it was thinner than my fabric and easier to work with. ⁣ ⁣ I unintentionally skipped the side zipper since I wasn’t paying attention to the instructions and I don’t unpick French seams in crepe. Working on my wearable toile of my #v1951. Adjustment I made before cutting it out was a FBA from the @cashmerette fit book, “Ahead of The Curve.” I need to take in the skirt a bunch and add a dart to the back of the skirt. Will probably also add a dart to the back neckline as it’s a little big in the back near my shoulders! (It’s all pinned in these photos so I’m hoping it will look like this in the end.)

#v1951– Here are some more details- I measured into a size 14 but sized down to a 12 given the other reviews I saw about the pattern running large. I omitted the side zipper and skirt lining, and biased bound the top of the skirt instead. I didn’t French seam the skirt, I used my serger. The fabric is from @fabscrap and I am pretty sure its polyester and was meant to line a suit or jacket but worked really well w this pattern!

Going through my photos for a) outfit inspiration and b) memories of warmer weather and I came across these (taken by @whereivewandered) of a dress I sewed this summer, in Cotton Poplin from @fabricsstorecom. I coveted this dress from Rachel Comey and was over the moon when she licensed the pattern with @simplicity_creative_group. See deets below: Pattern: #v1951 - Black Cotton Poplin from @fabricsstore - Cut size 8, although my measurements put me into size 12. This pattern has LOTS of ease. - Omitted skirt liner, pockets, and zipper. - Shortened back elastic by 1”. - Cut pieces on folds to eliminate seams. - Removed 2” from skirt so it would sit on my natural waist and not drop (had to redraw front curve piece) #memade #memadeeveryday #sewistsofinstagram #rachelcomeypattern

Recently I shared a reel of my finished @simplicity_creative_group #v1951 with all of my fit notes and thoughts, and I decided to go ahead and make one of the changes I talked about! I converted the gathered skirt waistline into a fitted waistline. I did this by removing the elastic, measuring the excess ease, and then evenly distributed that excess into 4” long darts on either side of CB, and also reducing fabric at CB on either side of the newly inserted invisible zip. If I could go back, I would remove more from CB so that the darts wouldn’t have to be SO deep (I already trimmed the darts, so unfortunately can’t do this now), but overall I’m really happy with the change, and feel like this finish looks more polished—especially with this fabric. I’ve worn the dress out twice now, and received compliments on both outings! 🥰I am ridiculously excited any time I get to say “Thanks! New sewing project on my cutting table: @rachelcomey for Vogue #v1951. I fell HARD for this pattern the moment I saw it, and can’t wait to have the dress in my wardrobe. I was lucky enough to find this @therow dead stock fabric at @moodfabrics the other day!!! Honestly what a find! It’s a gorgeous, medium-weight black rayon crepe, with just the tiniest bit of stretch. I’m gonna change a few things about the construction of the pattern—For example, I see no reason to fully line this dress. It’s far from perfect in many ways but it is a wearable toile! I’m pretty proud of the fit of this…which was the goal of working on this dress. I skipped a lot of the steps like lining the skirt and pockets because I just wanted to focus on fit. I wasn’t sure how this #v1951 would look on me as a curvier person because so many of the people I’ve seen it on are very differently shaped (read, skinnier) than I am. But with a FBA adjustment and cutting the pattern a few sizes smaller (there is so much ease, oh my god), I found a fit that works. Still requires me to dart the skirt in the back, but it works! Eventually I’ll get to this in a solid color or a pattern that I find easier to match.

I followed @jaclynsalem mods to not include skirt lining but my skills left it a bit fiddly and I’ll prob add a skirt lining in the future so I wear it more. this was my first big 4 pattern and i was pleasantly surprised with vogues instructions.

Sharing @simplicity_creative_group #v1951 I honestly wasn’t going to buy this pattern but when I saw Mimi G in it I literally ran back to pick it up. However I am not 100% satisfied with it. It may have been my fabric choice (I used a crinkled gauze fabric from my stash) but I do feel like it had a lot of access ease. Decided to share this anyway so that others may see it as well. I may try this again sometime in a different fabrication.

I sewed a fun, beautiful, nonsense dress for myself!! The first sort of thing like this I’ve sewn in so long. Most everything I’ve sewn lately has been utilitarian so it was such a blast. Not that this will be without utility- I wore it today to a baby shower and will wear to a wedding in a few weeks. I’m still nursing and this is perfect for whipping out a tit. Pattern: Rachel Comey for Vogue patterns #v1951 I omitted the invisible zipper bc EW and there’s so much elastic, I just did some basic measurements and felt like I’d be able to get it over either head or hips and both work. Most reviews said to size down, so I sized down to a 12 even tho my measurements put me at a 16. And even so the upper back was VERY big and loose, and I am a broad shouldered gal , and STILL I took about 2-3 inches out of the center back seam with a box pleat. According to the images on the pattern they dress is worn loosely around the shoulders but this just didn’t give me enough support for my breasts, so I did the pleat and wore it with the middle pieces cinched fully. #memademay #memademay2025 #rachelcomeypattern #voguepatterns #rachelcomey

Ooooh la la, I made the #V1951 and I love it and have lots of thoughts on it! Firstly, this was my first Vogue Patterns project. I am very spoiled with the detail and level of thought in many indie companies patterns and this Vogue one left me wanting so much more. I measured in at a size 12 and ended up making an 8 (the smallest size). Like everyone who I’ve seen make this pattern, I agree that the sizing runs quite large. Next, I didn’t like the lower back construction as written (too bunchy but also too loose). I ended up gathering in the elastic quite a bit more to get it to hang in a more flattering way. If I was making this again, I would do as @jaclynsalem did and so 2 lower back darts with a center invisible zipper. Here’s a list of the things I omitted completely: the skirt lining (didn’t need it), the pockets (not for me), and the invisible side zipper (also didn’t need it because of the elastic). ALL of that said, I love this dress. It’s a @rachelcomey for Vogue pattern and I dearly missed the boat last time she did a collab so I’m glad that I got a hard copy of this piece. Also, THE FABRIC! I love this fabric, which is a deadstock @balenciaga crinkle nylon from @moodfabrics. I am sorely tempted to also order the black and keep it in stash for a future project. Are we there yet??… the dolman top is traced from a RTW shirt I picked up a few years back and the skirt is the skirt portion of #v1951 which is a really great Rachel Comey pattern from Vogue. I’m not generally a fan of #big4 patterns but this one is a winner, I made the full dress a few years ago and it’s one of my favourites. Bamboo jersey is from the now gone Anthill Fabrics (Calgary sewists will remember that store) and the skirt fabric is a repurpose/reuse of a dress I had in the 90s when I was a student…. #yycsews #reuse #upcycle #handmadewardrobe #isewmyownclothes

It does have pockets. And it is a really cool concept, I love the design - @rachelcomey #v1951 . But those Big 4 Too Much Ease™️patterns are no joke. I spanned three sizes and went with the smallest and ended up taking 3/4” off the shoulder and side seams and it is still too big. I kept the skirt the same size but I would - will- size down next time. To be fair, the skirt elastic I used is too lightweight so that doesn’t help. I think that when I make this again I will go down three sizes from the size I initially cut and not line the skirt.
