Putting in the work on #V1856 a little girl dress coat for my gorgeous granddaughter. Just the sleeve lining to construct before I can put the whole coat together and start the finishing. I have to say I love making coats. I made my first for myself last year with one for my granddaughter to match. This year her coat is first and I hope to have mine ready for the holidays. It’s turning out better than I could have expected but remote fitting via calls to Mom @sarakups for measurements makes the final try-on a bit of a nail biter. I guess she can always grow. Are you in Team Trace? I’m not. 🤣 I assemble paper patterns, adjust and cut. This post is a perfect example of me procrastinating tracing! 🤣 Today I have trace a Vogue Child’s coat pattern that I loved. My granddaughter will visit me at the end of September so I want a create a toile for her to try on. Should be a quick process right? Apparently not. Mostly because this is the first Big 4 pattern I’ve selected since I started sewing again in 2020. Let you give you my early observations from a devoted #indiepatterndesigner sewer. 🧵ease in Big 4 is a new language. Fitted, semi-fitted, loose-fitting etc. These terms translate into various design ease based on your measurements and preferred fit. I do not speak this language yet… I want to learn so I can expand my pattern options. 🧵finished measurements are on the tissue. Why? What’s wrong with the pattern envelope? If you are buying multi size pattern you won’t be 100% sure of the finished measurements until you BUY the pattern. I can’t open the tissue in the store. 🤔 🧵 Vogue children’s patterns have different information . Great - Just as I’ve started to learn a new language now I add a dialect 😎😎 🧵 case in point - this child’s coat is ‘fitted’ which means little ease but that ease is not specified in general. Not the same as women’s ease ranges. The pattern has two finished measurements in the instructions pages NOT on the tissue! And the two measurements provided are a bit puzzling to me: 1)neck to hem length ( semi useful ) and 2)bottom of the coat circumference 😜. What about chest, waist or arm length? Nope! 🧵I hate tissue - give me a printed and taped pattern any day. So easy to alter. 🧵I could not find one pattern review on this pattern to give me fitting clues. After measuring the pattern I think I’m going to #toile a size 3. But frankly it’s a bit of a wild ass guess. So here I am tracing hoping this all works out. Learning this Big 4 language is hard - and I’ll take any suggestions anyone has for me.
