I’d planned to wear this for an Easter egg hunt this weekend, but the weather was too cold 🥶 please enjoy some awkward posing in front of someone else’s house instead! This is a highly, highly modified @simplicity_creative_group Vogue #v2048 out of some lovely deadstock viscose challis from @stonemountainfabric I picked up years ago and hoarded for the perfect project. It is the perfect amount of drape with body for this dress. The base Vogue dress has a fitted bodice with cups that are gathered under the bust and extend directly into the straps. I reshaped the bodice to make the straps extend up from the ribcage area and separated the cups, pivoted the dart/gathers in the cups from the bottom to the top edge, and reshaped them to have a more milkmaid style and a casing for a drawstring. I also lowered the center bodice a bit and drafted some loosely shaped half circle pieces to make sleeves. In the back, I doubled the width of the center back panels and inserted elastic to make it more size-adjustable. If I make this again, I’ll probably omit the zipper entirely and borrow some room from the side back panels for more elastic. The skirt is just three gathered rectangles, with a total bottom hem of over 20 feet (more than 6 meters for my non-American friends). I might even post a reel with the twirl action because the skirt is truly something to behold.

One week away from @secondstarevents_ Yule Ball and the gown is finally done. Like with every project, started off with a grand plan and start drastically reducing the scope as I ran out of time. I knew I want to incorporate fabric I don’t use often enough for this project. This dreamy ombré beaded tulle from Imperial Lace has just the right magic. It was easier to work with than I had imagined. Lots of hand stitching involved but patience wins the battle. Dress is based on a recently released Vogue Pattern #v2048. The sleeves were meant to be tied up into bows but I think it looks great even with just simple knots. Pattern is rated advanced. It is not a simple project but nothing too technically frightening. The base fabric is a double face iridescent duchess silk. Some final notes on making #v2048 this gorgeous Vogue Patterns dress. I made the longer length dress - it's not full length which was perfect for the rain. The longer ties added more drama (in a good way) and I'd love to see how the longer ties work on the shorter dress. The overlay has gathers where they attach to the bodice, but the look isn't particularly gathered the stiffer the material. My fabric was reasonably thick. I'd also use a lighter fabric if intending to do the shorter ties (but really, why would you?) as it will be easier to tie. After constructing the bodice (I did a toile in calico/muslin) I decided to add boning along the seams as it really needed the structure to sit flat on my figure. I think someone less curvy may have an unboned bodice sit flat. I also added horsehair braid to the waistline to add structure and stability. Even though the skirt is gathered it is huge and it's interlined and lined. There was an online tutorial on how to finish the edge of the ties, I just used a rolled hem foot. Overall the dress isn't too difficult to construct, it's a fit and flare dress with fantastic, dramatic ties overlaid. Once all the pieces were together, the dress was a bit unwieldly to finish so it took me a little extra time. I also decided to hand stitch the hem and it was worth it for the polished finish. And the pockets are very generous, they fit my phone, car key and a couple of cards, which is really all I needed for a dressy occasion! So no bag :) Tips on styling - I almost didn't add the necklace as the dress had so much drama, especially in the two tone fabric, but it took it to the next level. My event was in autumn in Brisbane, as you can see it's ok to have nothing on your shoulders for a bit, but it's also pleasant to have something to keep you warm, I opted for a shawl that I could wrap under the bows as when I contemplated my cape or a jacket, I realised tricky to tie solo at the venue.
