I drove through the moors and forests of the old Roxburghshire County, wending my way along the B6399, following along Whitrope Burn, until I crossed the Hermitage Water and took a small road to what must be one of the grimmest of all castles, Hermitage Castle. Known as “The strength of Liddesdale”, L’ermitage (watchtower) was built by the Norman De Soulis family in 1240. 60 years later William de Soulis was accused of witchcraft and treason against King Robert I, and local legend has it he was boiled in lead by his oppressed tenants at Ninestane Rig, a nearby stone circle. Whatever the case, his ghost is said to still haunt the castle, and I perfectly believed this. The next renowned lord of the Hermitage was Sir William Douglas, the Knight of Liddesdale, who starved his rival Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie to death there. The Black Douglases held the castle for a hundred years, and most of the current castle was built at this time. After the castle passed to the ownership of the Hepburns of Bothwell, and Mary Queen of Scots’ lover, James, 4th Lord of Bothwell. Mary made a famous horse ride from Jedburgh to visit her injured paramour there, but after helping Mary murder her husband, and marrying her shortly after, Bothwell was forced into exile. Sometime later the Bothwells lost the castle to the Crown, and the last murderous owner was Sir Walter Scott, Earl of Buccleuch, famous border reiver, warden of the Western Marches, and oddly, charmer of Elizabeth I. #hermitagecastle #hawick #liddesdale #maryqueenofscots #borderreivers #scottishhistory #b6399

#bpsewvember day 4: BEST . For this prompt I thought, what’s the best thing I’ve ever made? I’ve sewn lots of great things that I love but what’s the best? Well, this one took the longest time, and the most effort, and I probably learnt the most... . The pattern is #b6399 and it seems to be made using historical techniques. It comes together with metal snaps behind overlapping scalloped edges. There was SO much hand sewing, and I definitely learnt a lot about lace and satin. I think this was an “advanced” pattern and it might be the only advanced one I’ve ever sewn from the big 4. It was fun, I should do another one 😆 .
