I made this skirt from scratch using fabric from my homegirl @JOANN_stores (#sponsored) When my husband saw it, he said, “That’s a cute skirt. Where’s the before picture?” Um…this isn’t a refashion, honey cakes.😂 I guess I could have shown him a picture of the fabric before I cut it?😂😂 I actually get that question ALL THE TIME. People always assume that if I made something, I made it out of something else. And while that’s often the case, I do like to sew from scratch from time to time—but I have to be inspired first. I get overwhelmed at the possibilites of sewing from scratch, so I need to feel prompted by the fabric.🤓 When I saw this large gingham print. I knew I had to have it and make something amazing from it. Hence the skirt. Today we’re talking about our slowest makes in the #sewyourselfsustainable challenge and for the first time, I’m posting pictures of the inside of one of my garments and a few pics during my process of pattern cutting. 🤗 ⁣ ⁣ My fabric was expensive so in addition to sewing a practice dress, I also took my time laying out my fabrics and hand sewing the inside. Another pair of #winslowculottes from @helens__closet . The whole set was made from the top sheet of a bedding set I was replacing but loved too much to part with completely. This one has the elastic waistband in the back hack. The waistband also needs a desperate ironing but I did not have time for that this morning. The top is #s8328 and has a ridiculous amount of quick and dirty darts in the side back because my bust has shrunk exponentially since I made it. I do like the top quite a bit even so. Especially the back zipper. Confession: I heart sequins! The problem is, sequins itch. And as it turns out, mermaid sequin kimonos are heavy as heck. 😅. Even though my sequin projects are some of my least-worn makes, I continue making alllllll the things out of sequins. I’ve gotten smarter with each project and learned how to make sequins more wearable, but the itchiness keeps me from wearing some of my earlier projects as often as I would like. 😢 Do you love sequins enough to wear them even if they aren’t the most comfortable? So excited to share my entry for the #royalweddingsewalong I wanted to accomplish two things when choosing what to sew. First, I wanted to show beginner seamstresses that sewing beautiful formal attire from basic, easy patterns is possible. ❤️ Second, I wanted my outfit to truly represent who I am at this stage in life. I always dreamed of taking dance class as a child but it was never something my parents were able to do for me. So seven months ago, I signed up for my first dance class ever- ballet. One of my friends joked that most ballerinas END their ballet career at age 38 but that truth only pushed me forward to fulfilling my dream. I am definitely the most challenged dancer in my ballet class with no natural abilities, but I show up every week bc I believe that challenges invite growth and that winning doesn’t always mean being the best...sometimes winning means perseverance. My outfit is more than a contest entry or a dress I would wear to a royal wedding. My outfit represents 7 months of hard work. 🏆 Crop Top - #newlook6511 Ivory dupioni with an embroidered/embellished tulle overlay. NO MODIFICATIONS. Skirt -#S8328 Rose crepe with 4 layers of rose tulle and a top layer of teardrop tulle in eggnog. MODIFICATIONS: Instead of cutting 1 layer for the overlay, I cut 5. My latest creation in collaboration with @minervadotcom . 🤗⁣ ⁣ I designed and sewed this dress during the time period when I found out an oncologist had ordered an MRI for me bc test results after my surgery showed I had been living with a tumor in my uterus. 😅⁣ ⁣ Creating this fairytale-style dress in the middle of so much unknown was hard. But I REFUSED to let satan steal even more joy from my by keeping me away from my sewing machine. ⁣ ⁣ This finished dress is like a trophy to me. Satan lost, God won, and I am posing cancer-free in my fairytale dress! (Tumor was benign!) Praise God for answered prayers and His gift of the art of creativity! One of the things I love most about sewing is being able to design and create cohesive looks that look like they came straight from the hands of a stylist. ⁣ ⁣ Every single detail of my designs are planned before I even start them...even down to the shoes and earrings. Bc to me, sewing is more than knowing how to run some fabric through a machine and cut a pattern. It’s also picking fabrics and creating a well-styled look.⁣ ⁣ This look was created entirely with fabrics from my stash 🙈 and features some hand embroidery on the hemline of my lining. (I love you forever, Stephen Lostroh!) I also hand stitched my signature gold seam binding to the hemline of my brocade bc I thought it would be fun to have little pops of gold peeking out every now and then. ⁣ ⁣ But enough about my dress. Can we give my backdrop a standing ovation. 👏👏👏 I love how the sun shone through the colored glass and danced around me! I felt like I was in a light show. Haha And I like the glowy complexion it gave me so much that I’ve thought about packing up and living there. Instagram filters?
