Another day, another fun backless dress. This one, I made in two days before my Maine vacation 😂 which is a travel classic, but this was a perfect, quick sew! This is New Look #N6731 in the shortened version of view A, size 10. I took ~3 inches off the bottom and added a parallel 3” tall strip to hem the dress, folding the strip up and top stitching it in place to add contrast and a little structure to the hem. Other than that, no big changes! The elastic back/straps obviously gives you a lot of wiggle room, but I was surprised at how well this dress fit from the jump, as often the Big 4 sizing has too much ease for my taste (I did size down a whole size from my package measurements though, as per usual with Big 4 patterns). This view definitely offers a little side boob moment, again because of the elastic straps, which I am into! But a heads up depending on your chest size. I got this cotton fabric in Maine ~3 years ago, so it was fun to use it for a little Maine vacation dress ☺️ I definitely foresee making the longer version of this dress, possibly in view B. Today's my half-birthday! No celebrating today, but I got plenty of dancing in this weekend 🥳 .. Speaking of halves, can you tell the front and back of this dress are made with different fabrics? $14 was a steep price for a beginner sewist in 2017, so I only bought 1.5 yards. After years of finding nothing small enough to sew, I lucked up and found the same print for $7/yd! This dress (New Look 6731) was the perfect use for a small rectangle plus a long one. Only, it turns out, the cheaper fabric is much more saturated and a little rougher to the touch. I’d planned this project out on @stash_hub a few months ago - a dress for my gorgeous daughter @carascobiexx She’s going to New York and I thought would like a new frock for her trip. ❤️ Pattern - New Look #N6731 view B. A few adjustments - size 14 at the bust grader down to a 12 at the waist and hips, lowered the neckline after a tip from @sewsewquickquicksew (thank you Jackie), omitted the button fastenings at the shoulders and pockets and made it 8cm shorter. The fabric was a soft cotton from an amazing Facebook group, @manishasfancyfabrics 🥰🥰🥰 The elasticated cut out sides were also a new technique for me. 3rd make from my stash Helga and Nic - been there for 319 days - all but a few scraps left which I’ve kept as possible pockets in another project. My very first me made dress. I had the best time making this. I rarely find linen dresses to fit my unique curves, so being able to grade the pattern between sizes for the perfect fit was really special for me. Season inappropriate pattern haul! I blame @minervadotcom for having a half price New Look patterns sale 😃. This little collection marks the beginning of my serious intention to create cool dresses for future summer holidays 😎 ✈️ ☀️. #n6731 I love the idea of this dress, the bare back is gorgeous, and the cutaway waist is potentially slimming. However, will it work on my body, will I stray into mutton/lamb territory, or, with the right fabric, will I get away with it? Can I create one of those boob hammock things inside? 🤔 #n6692 This was recommended to me when I asked for suggestions for summer dresses which would hide a bra, or potentially work without one. I mastered shirring this year, so I really fancy trying the shirred back on this one. #n6507 That big frill would hide free swinging bazookas 🫣. However, a total lack of support for the girls could well result in sweaty underboobs. But I fancy trying it! I could probably try piecing together a few left over bits of fabric to make a short one. #n6491 This pattern made me go searching for sew-in bra cups. I think I could slot a couple into this shape- particularly with that underbust seam. Again, I could maybe use some offcuts to play around with it. I like the halter neck version most. So all that’s left is for me to stop being so self conscious about my upper arms - the reason why I ALWAYS wear sleeves. My beautiful Nanna had the same hang up, whereas my Mam doesn’t seem to care. I see repulsive, short, fat arms with wrinkly loose skin, however my rational brain tells me that no-one looks or cares about my limbs. Make Number 23 was a Cutaway Dress from @simplicity_creative_group⁣ in a navy blue gabardine-like twill from @fabricwarehouse_rahway. I never really looked at New Look patterns before but this one was cute and I wanted to try this trend. My machine was cooperating and gave me some amazing button holes and I used real horn buttons.
