It finally stopped raining and was able to take a few pictures of the comfiest bomber of my dreams . I sewed up Simplicity 8418 this weekend in a quilted velour from @joann_stores and lined with the prettiest floral fabric. I absolutely love this jacket- both sides and is extra warm with the quilted velour. This project was one of my #makenine2023 and I will definitely be sewing another. I'm not really sure why they look like mugshots but it is what it is. This is my #upcycled bomber jacket inspired by @so.sew.bean - the outer is made from a doona cover and the lining from a tablecloth, both from @savers_au *Hacks* I added some padding between the layers. A quilted mattress protector in the body pieces and regular wadding in the sleeves which I quilted in for stability (it was only a single mattress protector so I ran out, the sleeves are really big pieces). I chose to highlight the gold panel at the CF and CB (I will update with a pic from behind oops), as well as down the centre line of the sleeves. I was pretty happy with my pattern matching, except for the piece on the bottom ribbing as you can see it's not centred on the LHS). It was a frustratingly hard build due to the materials but the pattern itself is great and I am going to make another one. Vintage sleeping bag upcycle #2 Still a little high off the thrill of transforming Barbie I had to go back for seconds! After scouring the op shops I found Winnie the Pooh ready to explore the world! The different layout of the print lent itself to a change of pattern. For this make I used #mccalls7637. This has a set in sleeve rather than the Raglan I did for Barbie jacket. I made a few changes - pockets are only single lined so the reverse of the front section lines the pocket (yuck). So instead of cutting two pockets I went ahead and cut four so pockets are fully lined with satin - much nicer 👍🏼 I preferred the process for fitting lining from #s8418 so went with that way. Less hand stitching, professional looking finish - especially like the way the lining is sewn to cuffs. This is a unisex pattern and the fit is a bit fuller and longer. Next time I will shorten so I can used 22” zipper and not have to shorten a 24” (pattern calls for 23”) I reduced the cuff circumference and they are still pretty big - mind you I have skinny wrists so that could be a me problem 😂 Made a pocket topstitch template to remove the need to mark fabric or tacking. Traced the stitching lines and then reduced by the width of my foot. Worked a treat (you’ll see I left a wee ‘genius’ love note to myself for next time 😂🤣😍) Lovely pink satin lining from @thefabricshopnz. Feels divine on 🤩 Thinking I might sell this if I am brave enough. I really feel awkward selling my sewing - obviously wasn’t born with a ‘sales’ gene 🤷‍♀️ Love the excitement of the transformation. I made a bomber jacket 👏👏, I should have shortened length which I realised after I attached pockets and sleeves. Also, didn't look at ease and hence it's bigger than I would like. However, it's still good, still figuring out how best to style it. My first time sewing raglan sleeves, don't normally wear raglan sleeves, I didn't have any raglan in my wardrobe. It's interesting construction but I prefer set in sleeves. Fabric is scuba knit from spotlight (for a change it's not from opshop 😁), it was however on clearance sale ☺️. Sleeping bag transformation #3 with recycled duvet cover for lining. This one is so cool! And it’s reversible 🤩 (well almost, I figured this out toward the end so the zipper is not a flippy one) The sad news is I was making it for my husband and it doesn’t fit 😩 I was going to make the larger size and at the last minute changed my mind as he doesn’t like things too baggy so down sized but went just a tad too far. The dress is Simplicity 8874, size 18 bodice and size 22 skirt. I did a 1.5” FBA but I probably only needed 1 inch. I’m late to the game but I like the dress, although I still have fit issues to work out. The jacket is Simplicity 8418, size 18 graded to 20 at the hips. It’s not the pleather bomber jacket of my dreams and it really tested my patients! The pockets feel awkward and I had some trouble with the zipper. Make sure you transfer all pattern markings and watch the zipper length if you make this bomber. I like the dress paired with Simplicity 1318 which is an “easy to sew kimono,” it is easy to sew and wear and I see more of these in my future. The bomber jacket is made out of Telio Roxanne stretch leather from fabric.com. The dress is made from a @Robertkaufman knit from Stonemountain & Daughter. I know I've been quiet on here recently. I had to pause life briefly as I tried to get my completely disabling anxiety disorder under a little bit better control (Still a work in progress.) Since I have a bit more energy, I decided to do some actual sewing for the first time since November. This was a jacket in my WIPs pile. I didn't have a zipper or ribbing or the motivation. I was just focused on getting through each day, watching @queereye to distract me from the worst of new medication side effects. But then @karamo reminded me of all the beautiful bomber jacket possibilities and I promised myself to pick this one back up once I felt more like myself. 🧵 Pattern/Mods: Used the #S8418 as a base (max 44" chest), lengthened it 2 inches (my usual), sewed shoulder darts instead of doing 2-piece sleeves, and added welt zipper pockets after deciding that the side seam pockets weren't for me. 📦 I got this lovely merchant and mills jacquard cotton from @gather_here (the symphony colorway) and used a bemberg lining from @stonemountainfabric . The ribbing I got last year from @mulberrymacnab and was leftover after my toaster sweater. . In my previous life I listed ten patterns a day five days a week, lol.
