Hear ye, hear ye! 📯 Don't throw away your self drafted pattern pieces just because you don't like one project. I originally made this top to wear to the Virginia Renaissance Faire in May. I wore it once, and haven't touched it since because I was super sweaty that day (it was like 100°) and the fabric showed underarm moisture super easily! I was so upset and embarrassed that this top has been sitting in my donation pile since. I even threw away my pattern pieces - which sucks because except for the sleeves it's self drafted! I tried it on again with some mom jeans I thrifted and decided I do actually like it, pit sweat aside. I'd like to make it again in a different fabric. The original was just a thrifted bedsheet anyway (specifically a bamboo twill weave with stains I had to cut around). Thankfully, I did take a photo of my pattern piece so I can use that as reference, swipe to see. IIRC, I used the same base neckline as my red flannel dress I made for Thanksgiving, then rotated one dart into the neckline for gathers. I used the waist darts for ease, then drew a line from the arm pit the hipline with just enough space for my hips. Everything I know about drafting I learned from @theclosethistorian and I highly recommend all her videos. The sleeves are from Simplicity S8695 View A. I used the top part of the sleeve and sewed an elastic channel in the bottom to gather the sleeve. The neckline is finished with bias binding.

Very excited about my first vintage repro sleeve pattern, Simplicity 8695 (reissued in 2020). I’m guessing the original would have been from the early 1930’s judging from the styles and I’m flabbergasted that there’s no historical information provided. Yes, although I very carefully cut open the eBay seller’s packaging, I proceeded to cut into the pattern envelope (lower right pic): 👿 (Has this ever happened to you?). Anyway, I was watching a very forgettable 1935 Claudette Colbert film, “The Bride Comes Home” and Claudette wore a stunning Travis Banton-designed silk chiffon blouse with sleeves exactly like View F. An elevated version of my original way back in the beginning dresses. The body & collar are my own design, the sleeves are from the @simplicity_creative_group pattern #s8506 or #D0823 (depending on if you got the display version or drawer version). I combined views C & D & heavily altered it as well so that it wasn’t a massive puff. I really loved the gathers on the shoulder though & wanted to do something more interesting than just a regular puff sleeve. The sleeve pattern is actually literally just a pattern of various vintage 1930’s sleeves, which is so awesome. #s8695 is also a pattern of just vintage 1930’s sleeves. As a person that likes to combine different pieces from different patterns together, especially sleeves, I find this delightful. The actual dress is made from black cotton batiste from a store that no longer exists. The collar fabric was in my closet. I think it’s Kona cotton left from dog bandanas I made. The trim is from a box of someone’s grandmother’s sewing trims that they sent me like 20 years ago. The ribbon is double faced satin ribbon from @moodfabrics This is like signature me. For those of you that have known me forever you’d be like oh right yes, that’s a Nanette dress, even though it has definitely evolved. I really really look forward to making more of my own designs, I have a giant stack of drawn out ideas & my notes app is full of things I pop out of my head so I don’t forget. I just figured I’d make a bunch of stuff from patterns that people search so I can get out there as much as possible at this point. And if I didn’t have to sew all of it I would seriously have my own clothing line. Love the design portion. Hopefully this photo loaded at a much better quality than it was looking like!
