McCalls 7789 is a terrific pattern to create a dress or jumpsuit, with three different options for the top. Today's video is part 1 of 3, where I've begun sewing the bodice, in a soccer print fabric from Joann. In part 2, I'll make the (green!) pants, and I'll complete my jumpsuit in part 3. Like with many garment patterns, working through this one will take time, but it is not a complicated pattern at all. You have overwhelmingly voted “peekaboo” in my previous reel, thank you very much for your nice comments 🥰🫣👍 Here are some details of what it is and how I made it. First of all, I’m not a jumpsuit person but ever now and again I’ll try one to see if I fancy one. And om goodness, this is a bombshell 💣! Design is so flattering, the pleated trousers are amazing! I might hack them into wide leg pants at some point. But here is the biggest surprise- I made this with stretch French Terry fabric! Partly because I’m no good at invisible back zips and was kind of hoping I won’t need one if I sew it with stretchy fabric 😆 but the truth is - it’s a close fitting garment and it needs a zip. So had to put one it and it’s just about fine. I also put in bra cups which I took out from an old swimsuit I no longer need. I left a little gap at side seams lining so I can take them in/out. Once the jumpsuit was done I felt a bit … eeeerrr… uncomfortable 🥴 with the peekaboo 😆 I was worried if it actually looks more like a peek-a-boob! 😆 sexy, no doubt but was it for me?! 🫣 So I stuffed a bit of fabric to the inside. And I can actually wear it with a bra then. But you all said peekaboo so I’ve got to listen 😉 🧵 fabric is French Terry from Poppy Europe bought from @sarahsimplelifeuk It drapes and moves better than poplin would in my opinion 👍 plus it hugs the body in a way that poplin wouldn’t. 🧵 pattern is McCalls 7789 in size 10. Me-mades for 34+ degrees celsius weather in two parts of Thailand and 10-20 degrees celsius weather in Tokyo...a tricky trip to pack for! 🪡1. My latest make just in time for the trip, #m7789 with a few mods, adding pockets and a slit for easy walking. This fabric was through a white elephant fabric swap and it was perfect for this dress in hot weather, a light almost gauze. 🩱2. A two piece bathing suit (previously posted on the grid) - both fabrics from #bffabrics and #brooklynswim from @petitestitchery 🧵3. #naomicroptop in light black cotton shirting and RTW shorts. Featured amazing drinks include a Thai red tea and a Thai red tea with espresso 😋 👕4. One of my favorite makes, a white #ogdencami with thrifted material paired with #florencepants and a #lucytop with RTW jean shorts Never got a picture of my light blue tencel #hallondress but that was a great wear in hot and humid weather!

#memademay2025 wedding guest edition! I made #m7789 in black dupioni silk. I am not often a careful, slow sewist. I’m chasing the dopamine and running from boredom-aka project being banished to the UFO pile-but I knew I wanted to get this one RIGHT! I did a full toile of the bodice, and I’m so glad I did! I made two adjustments to the bodice to address underarm gaping that really improved the fit. However, I was also rather overconfident and preemptively shortened about 1” thru the rise, which is a fairly standard adjustment for me…turns out…maybe not with jumpsuits. I didn’t do a baste fit either, and just went for it and French seamed both crotch curves (which was so fun and easy to deal with when I realized I still had to, y’know, install the zipper.) I was able to reclaim some length by adding ½” thru the middle of the cummerbund part and reducing the waist seam from ⅝ to ⅜”. *I* can tell that this impacted the proportions negatively, but I don’t know that anyone else would look at me and think, “OMIGOD. her waist seam is, like, ½-⅝” too low! BIG YIKES!” I French seamed everything that wasn’t fully lined…even HAND STITCHED the lining to the waist seam bc I didn’t want any visible topstitching and didn’t trust that I could pristinely stitch in the ditch. …AND after all that…the pockets are serged bc I was worried about bulk? Haha. I should not have been. I could take in a few families as tenants, and no one would know! My phone doesn’t even change how the pants hang. Magic! I skipped a bra and wore my @cakesbody covers, which I really do like, but they don’t stick to me well enough to reliably stay on without clothing covering them, so going to the bathroom was a bit of a palaver every time. Overall, I am 💯 convert on pants for special occasions. I love looking at dresses, but I do not ever actually love wearing them. I think a mashup of this bodice and the #mntaniaculottes would make a really cute 50s jumpfrock? Frocksuit? Cocktail romper? What would we call that?

This year’s theme for #ArizonaFrocktails by @arizonasewcial was “My Mother Would Never Wear This”. Pretty sure my mom wouldn’t wear these colors, a strapless crop top showing visible midriff, or pants hemmed to a length requiring heels. Hey folks, I can’t believe it’s been so long! Motherhood has definitely been a trip, but it’s been so much fun! I’ve finally been able to get back into sewing for myself again. Still getting used to new shape post-partum, but overall it’s going smoother than expected 🤗 Here’s the first woven I’ve made since pregnancy, which was super nerve-wracking, but I’m so pleased with how it turned out! Also made a bonus romper for the baby girl, because why sew if I can’t matchy matchy with her? Here’s a jumpsuit I made. It’s based on McCall’s 7789. But my chest would not be contained even by the biggest size. Fortunately doing Top Class with @brooksanncamper meant I had a solution. I drafted the bodice from my sloper and I’m pretty pleased with it in the end. I just need more shoulder flexibility so I can actually zip it up on my own. Sigh. Made with silk linen. Today is two weeks since I got fully vaccinated and things are starting to look up. We are not clear yet, with vaccination rates slowing in the US and the pandemic raging abroad, most notably in India. But today I am taking a pause to be thankful for the health care workers, essential workers, and my incredible support network over the past year for getting me to this point. . So today I am celebrating in my fabulous new linen jumpsuit with hand embroidery. This project is very much a product of the pandemic, made from bright red linen I ordered online and couldn't think of what to do with and a time-consuming hand-embroidered bodice that kept me busy in isolation. . It's an experimental mash-up of #M7789 with a square neck #M7719 but the color, shape, and embroidery all came together to make a happy garment I'm ready to step out in. This was supposed to be a jumpsuit then a force field fell over the bodice pattern pieces and I couldn’t bring myself to cut them, already laid out on the fabric. It was mysterious and powerful. After weeks on the cutting table I accepted that future me had cast an enchantment into the past to prevent a terrible jumpsuit-related tragedy and I made pants to free up the cutting table for something else. One day I’ll see if the enchantment allows me to make a separate top with remaining fabric for a faux jumpsuit or if the whole idea has been hexed.
