Needed a dress to fit into the theme of 1930 Film Noir aesthetic and decided to take on a project last minute. Was able to complete this dress in just a few days and the result didn’t disappoint! Made in burgundy color 4-ply silk crepe is this vintage reproduction McCall pattern #m8338 featuring flared bias cut skirt and gathered front. Difficulty of this pattern could be anywhere between easy to advanced depending on the details you choose. Going with the option to make front bodice with bound buttonholes would certainly make this more suited for braves and patients. Cut day This afternoon I'm going to cut out as many of these projects as I can. The plan is to start construction tomorrow afternoon. On the docket: 1. Pink knit dress 2. Green formal (I'll be changing the back slightly) 3. Pink and Red striped pajamas (still sorting out which pattern to use) 4. Green linen dress and jacket 5. White linen dress, jacket, and skirt (skirt pattern not pictured) I think I'll start with the pink knit dress as it's a quick sew. Today is my birthday! A vintage 30s style dress for 30 years on earth. Unfortunately, making this last minute didn’t give any time to make adjustments for fit, so I can’t wear it today, but I feel the fabric alone is too pretty not to share. I’ll also have a green belt to match. I’ll let my vintage garment peeps feel me in on how this garment is suppose to fit. I assume this dress was originally made for someone with little to no bust, where the front scoop sits under the bust, not on top. It accentuates me more than I’d like, and I desire more of a loose fit. I could be wrong though. Anyone know how it’s meant to fit? I made @mccallpatterncompany M8338 with a vintage black wool crepe and some kinda blue wool erm fabric stuff? 🤷‍♀️ I was inspired to do the colour blocking by the lovely @frithwilkinson 1930s Plaid and Plain dress. Now this pattern comes with a warning!! The pattern calls for bound buttons on both sides of the dress. 1) They’re not easy and you have to have all your markings in place etc but then you fold over the self facing and repeat them. Urghhhhh seriously???? Unnecessary and bulky IMHO. I cheated and made regular machine made button holes for the inside. I’m glad I did because the buttons have to go through 2 layers of fabric and it’s fiddly as a fiddle! I had some vintage buttons lined up, but in the end went with covered buttons and recovered an old 30s metal belt buckle. If your making this dress then I’m sure you’ve read others reviews but for me the bust is too big and the ribs too wide. So I reduced them best I could. I don’t know if it needs the side opening. I made a bound one because there’s no way I’m opening all those fiddly buttons. But I reckon you could do one or the other. Would I make it again? Left to right, top: my number one, ride or die of the year is the @paper_theory #zadiejumpsuit, which I would have worn daily if society and weather allowed; Tim’s tropical @mccallpatterncompany #m6044 shirt, which got worn so hard I worried it would grow holes after less than a year of wear. The vintage Snuggie (#m8338) my mom made me to match hers is my constant winter companion.
