A beautiful sunny winters day to capture my latest dress and the perfect plaid frock to celebrate Burns Night! My first make of 2025 has been a while coming! I actually bought this gorgeous blue and brown brushed cotton plaid in the autumn of 2023, but it never quite got to the top of my list! I decided to make my favourite smock style dress based on #mmflorencedress However I had recently picked up #n6604 from a charity shop and loved the pin tuck detail, so I added tucks on the shoulders and chest. Worn with a big petticoat it’s really quite cosy! Although I have to say, it is quite attracted to cat hairs!! Look what I made! 🤩 Swipe for some progress pics. Some of you may recognise this fabric, those of you who are lucky to own a purse made from it know just how gorgeous it is, I couldn't resist! This top turned out to be beautiful, floaty at the bottom, slightly fitted at the top and a little peep hole at the back. Easy to dress up or dress down I think. It was so much fun (and a learning curve!) to make something wearable for myself for a change! I've got a bunch of patterns I'm hoping to try next - I just need to pick one 😄 For anyone wondering this is the New Look pattern (N6604) thats currently free with the @sewhq , photos were mostly taken whilst sewing at night except for the first one 😅

Fit issues, yay! I didn't make a muslin for this blouse and found after I sewed the pintucks that the sleeve heads ended up teeny tiny. I sewed the sleeves onto the blouse to make sure it wasn't some new awesome design I hadn't come across yet, and they indeed impinged my range of motion severely. Raising my arms to 90 degrees pulled on the whole blouse, and raising my arms up all of the way was impossible unless I wanted the sleeves to rip off (might've been funny though). I removed the sleeves and recut them using a trusted sleeve pattern. They were roomier so when I put them on, the part below the pintucks ballooned out ridiculously, which I tamed by adding elastic to the cuffs. I can see why the patternmakers cut the sleeves the way they did (so that the pintucks wouldn't wrap around the shoulder curve), but it just didn't work for my beefy upper arms and shoulders. I'm so glad I redid the sleeves because the blouse is getting a lot of wear now. I've labeled the uncomfortable fabric tension as drag lines in the pic but I don't know if they're called drag lines if they are not there in neutral position.
