I have had a few sewing fails recently but I think this dress has restored my sewjo . I cut a large but had to take the bodice in a few cm and will definitely go down a size next time . Thank you to my 6.5 year old photographer! She did a great job! This is the @simplicitymccallsaustralia #m8285 dress I sewed up as a Minerva Brand Ambassador. The fabric is a Linen Viscose Minerva Exclusive print called Vibrant Flowers and it truly is vibrant and soft and slubby and beautiful. I cut a size Medium and the only adjustment I made was to shorten the waist 2 inches (I learnt from the Marina McCalls!). Still drop waisted but fits my frame a lot better. McCall’s M8285 I finished this @mccallpatterncompany #M8285 in the fall. I made view B in a size small with no adjustments, in a challis fabric from @minervadotcom. Overall I like this dress, but it isn’t a knockout. I like the shape and yoke but it looks pretty nondescript. I think it may be the dropped waist but the pockets are a little bit too low. It may not be my favorite dress but it is comfy and swishy so I know I will be pulling this out to wear often. ~ McCall’s 8285 ~ I’ve been loving this pattern since its release but wasn’t convinced if a drop waist would work with my non-pregnant-belly. I impulse bought this beautiful cotton from @darncheapfabrics during our Victoria road trip last year and decided then and there that it would become this pattern. And I’m glad I finally did! It was an on-and-off make as I had a baby last June. Not too difficult if you have the time and experience. As per usual big4 style, the instructions were missing a couple of items (eg. no mention of putting on the second placket 😂) so you need to know what you’re doing. But the instructions were clear otherwise, with what was noted. I mostly followed the instructions, with a few personal amendments - eg. I interfaced both sides of the collar as I didn’t want it to be too floppy. All-in-all, a great make and may make another! What a make! I'm so happy with the result! And a joyfully one too. I've been working on projects for the kids with deadlines for most of the year so it was lovely to start a project with no time constraints. At first it was fun and enjoyable - all familiar sewing territory. Then came the button placket and collar - unfamiliar .. initially scary .. but then a satisfying skill building project. Made a shirt out of stashed Marc Jacobs "confetti ribbon" rayon challis. #m8285 view A but with the sleeves and collar of C (📷5). I like this pattern for its front yoke, light gathering and slightly ballooned sleeves (📷2 and 3). I made a size medium but it was too tight under the arms so I added diamond shaped godets (📷4). The fabric was left over from a dress I made in 2015 (📷6).

I'd been eyeing McCall's M8258 all spring, & it ended up turning into the perfect "Witchy Barbie" dress to wear to the Barbie movie. I made no modifications to the actual pattern itself in this version. I struggled with which size to cut for this dress due to the ease. I went with a size matching my full bust/waist measurements. I ended up with gaping at the neckline & underarm area. On the next version, I sized down, & it fit much more appropriately. The only changes I made were during the construction of the garment. If you use a lace or sheer overlay, the pattern doesn't require an interior facing layer. I could see that was a mistake waiting to happen (no structure). So I cut facing versions of those pieces, & that was the right move. The pattern also doesn't have you interface the neckline or waistband, but it does need it in lightweight fabrics. Also of note, pay attention to the notches and dots on the neckline on this pattern. Mark them precisely, then use them. The fabric edges won't align, but the actual stitching lines/pivot points match up perfectly. As written, the pattern also has the seams for the edge of the neckline & the waistband not enclosed on the interior. I took the time & did so (see pics). Otherwise, I shortened the hem by about 2 inches, & I'm around 5'8", so that is notable. For the butterfly sleeves, I just whizzed the hem thru my serger for a rolled hem in a coordinating thread. I really ended up adoring this pattern. It's not the most beginner friendly, but it is not advanced. However, once you make it once & grasp the construction, it goes quite fast the next time thru. I've made one more version since, & very much will be making more! There's a lot I love about this pattern hack. As I started to sew it, the postie delivered me the McCalls #M8285 from the US, which I had forgotten I'd ordered and is so close to this dress 😂 so the idea had clearly been on my mind! I knew this fabric needed a relaxed style and in my frustrated-no-sew-jo state I decided a hack was the way to go. I'll be honest, I'm not sure where the exact plan for this came from, only that I knew since I last made an Alea, I wanted to make another. It worked out pretty well I think and I will definitely make another of these. The hack itself was pretty simple. I used the shorten line on the Alea Body to shorten the shirt to a short bodice. I had planned to use the Leila panels for the skirt, but decided I wanted something a bit longer and remembered how much I like the proportions of the Grace Dress Skirt. The rest was pretty simple. The problem I had with this was that I hadn't properly thought through the button placket. Initially, I wanted buttons all the way down but I realised too late that to achieve this, I would have needed to add a separate placket piece that ran the whole length of the dress. The placket on the Alea patten as it is, is made from folding back the edges. This just didn't work with the gathers and was an issue just because I didn't plan... next time! Instead I connected the skirt panels together at the front. This does mean I have an unnecessary centre seam, but now I have properly pressed it (unlike in my photos 🙈) it hangs in the gathers and you can't see it.
