#thevintagefashionchallenge Day 9: 1940s I love the 1950s styles, but I admit I have a big soft spot for the 1940s style! The seventh photo is of my maternal grandparents on their wedding day in June of 1946. My Grandpa's brother and my Grandma's sister, who are standing at their sides, were married on the same day a year later! The last photo is my Grandma's wedding dress, which is a simple post-war wedding dress, which has lost its color due to age and being dyed in the 1970s to be worn as my aunt's prom dress. What a big difference one teeny clip makes! Last time I accidentally clipped both sides, but this time I managed to just clip the back (as per the instructions) and it went so much more smoothly! I made a #notetoself since even old dogs can learn new tricks, but I might forget… Button placket is in! Update on shorts #wearabletoile … after inserting the pockets, sewing the major seams and trying on I decided that removing a whole 40mm from the rise of this #patternhacking version of #s8447 was probably too much. Bit tricky to tell without the waistband, but I decided to remove 10mm from the rear crutch… 🙃 I also decided to leave out the side button closing, ignore all waist shaping, and use an elasticated waist. I am aiming for high-waisted, but by using elastic I will have some flexibility if the rise turns out to be too short for that… #contingencyplan 🙃 Fingers crossed! Waistband in on! My #emotionalsupportchicken is nonplussed, but I couldn’t be happier! I went ahead and used the straight waistband from the #vintagepattern, and to my surprise, it fits really well! I suspect this is because these 1940s trousers are very VERY high-waisted! I may have made them even more high waisted than the 1940s intended 😮but this was my plan all along… this means that they remain comfortable, even though they are much tighter than I usually wear a waistband! But they are so high that that bit of your tummy doesn’t really expand, even when you eat too much!! Ha! 🙃 And let’s hear it for basting! As I have noted before, not #basting is one of the #badhabits I inherited from my mother. But I am recovering from that, and every time I do it, I think why don’t I do it more often! The stitch in the ditch waistband has been 100% successful, and basting gets all the credit!! Woo hoo!!! Now to decide on buttons, but that is literally a job for the New Year !!! OK… after an epic fail I’m back on the horse trying to fix the fit of 1940s trousers #s8447… 🏇🏇🏇 This time I’ve removed 40mm from the rise (yikes, bit scared it will be too much but I did test with pins on the last toile… so fingers crossed) and just to keep things complicated I have also drafted a slash pocket test…🙃 😮🙃 Aiming for #wearabletoile shorts in this mustard bears cotton duck… I barely have enough (maybe not even enough? ☹️) so these shorts will be quite short!! and definitely won’t be converted into a skirt if they fail! 1940s shorts update: so I had lots of helpful, but also contradictory, advice on how to sort out excess room at the waist on this #wearabletoile 🙃 In the end, I decided to remove about 1cm from both front and back centre seems in a very long tapered adjustment. Still not sure if this was the smartest move, but it did have the advantage of improving the #patternmatching of the bird on the front which was really driving me a bit crazy! It’s not perfect, but much improved! I also lengthened the back darts by 5mm and removed about another 5mm from each of them. So if my maths are right (never a sure thing 😮) overall I have removed about 60mm from the waist, which really is totally crazy considering the back of the packet indicated that the waist should’ve been 40mm too small!!!! I have also unpicked and re-sewn the crutch seam as I went off piste accidentally and it was bunching up because I sewed the inner leg seam last… after looking at the actual instructions I went off piste again and sewed the crutch seam with one leg inside the other, which is the method I learned as a teenager. All much improved now!! phew!! I have put in the placket for the buttons at the side and was thrilled to find a tiny bit of the perfect colour thread for the hand stitching in my stash. Now I just have to decide whether or not to use the straight waistband that comes with the pattern or to go to the trouble of making a curved waistband??! 🦙1940s Drama Llama Pants 🦙 Despite the initial fit being a full size too big (I cut an 18 per my waist measurement sizing), I’m thrilled with how these turned out. The adjustments to get the fit right were relatively minimal - I simply increased the darts and the seam allowance. Otherwise, all these needed were a lazy sway back adjustment (swipe to see my approach) and I ended up with my perfect fit. Whilst it’s frustrating at the time, if I’m unsure I’ll always cut larger because bringing in is a lot easier than trying to make something too small work. The waist is the kind of high high waist I love and they have the low (but not drop) crotch that vintage styles are known for. My only gripe is the lack of in seam pockets. I get that that’s in part because of the button up side, but I recently made a vintage pinafore that also does up at the sides and used a rather simple but genius construction for pockets. Will definitely be adding these to my next version. But it’s the llamas that are the real star of this show. The slightly drapey midweight drill from @spotlightstores really lets @taranormal design shine and I’m regretting not buying more so I could make myself a matching set. 🩷Pink 1940s Slacks🩷 They turned out soooo cute and I love them basically. I'm so pleased to have a pair of trousers but in a summery bright colour so I can still feel bright and sunny even if it's raining and cold. As I've made these a few times before the fit was all as pEr normal. I know the waist looks a little big in these photos but by the end of the day I need that extra room ok! I didn't take a close up photo of the buttons but looks at the colour match! And those were just from my stash, it's so satisfying when you have just the perfect thing already. Perfectly paired with my @rocketoriginals 💘 sandals and a 1950s top I made last year. Done! I made a couple of adjustments on this #wearabletoile As You can see I added 10mm to the top of the back centre rise, but this was not necessary, apparently, and has made a weird wrinkle at the back near the waistband… at the moment I don’t hate it so much that I am going to remove the entire waistband to fix it, but that day may yet come 🙃☹️🙃 I also removed about 10 mm from the back at the hip, and this has improved fit! I may yet need to lower the crutch a little bit but I will wear these trousers for awhile to see how they go in terms of stretching and comfort… I made the waistband much tighter than I am normally comfortable with because the previous toile stretched a lot! This time I used selvedge at the waist seam to prevent stretching, so we shall see what happens?!? Overall, not perfect, but definitely wearable, and I don’t regret using the good linen fabric as it is behaving very different than the stiffer cotton duck I was using before… I am loving the #selfdrafted slash pockets, pleats and #vintagebuttons … I like these real pearl shell buttons so much I added an extra decorative row! These pants have had a lot of #patternhacking but they started as 1940s reissue #s8447 Overall a win, and we shall see if more adjustments are needed.. The weather has been so rubbish here so I wanted to make a pair of trousers but in a bright summery colour, so I can be comfortable but still feeling sunny even if it's raining. 🩷Pattern - #s8447 Sometimes I wonder if I should try something new but this pattern is just too perfect that I can't resist it. I made the solo trouser option. Third time lucky? 🍀 I am having another go at a very modified version of these 1940s wide-legged high-waisted trousers! I decided to leap in and #cuttheprecious so hopefully this #wearabletoile in black linen will work!! Linen is so much floppier than the other fabric I had been using as a #toile and at some point, you really need to test the fabric, you are actually going to use! I drafted a new pattern including modifications from the previous effort, and also added another 5mm to the back rise, while removing about 10mm from the back outside leg seam. These trousers will be 3/4 length and the original pattern tapered near the bottom, but I removed that so they will be very wide indeed!! Fingers crossed that these are all good things!🙃 My #selfdrafted slash pockets are in! I sewed in a piece of the selvage between the front and the pocket bag to hopefully prevent stretching… Linen does like to move! That is enough for today! DONE (Again… I am nothing if not tenacious!!) After wearing the shorts I made (with some #patternhacking) from #s8447 1940s trousers I decided that the fit was actually an epic fail. The crutch has just WAY too low and actually uncomfortable… So I #upcyled them into a skirt! Since the legs were so very wide this was very simple! As the boyf put it “you made a transformer!” from super baggy shorts to a long-ish slimline A-line skirt! To maximise length while also having a decent hem I made some matching bias tape. I had a couple of big bits, but I didn’t want to waste them, so I cut 50mm strips from 2 odd shaped scraps. Continuous bias binding is amazing because you only have 1 seam, whereas I had 4. But it was much more economical this way… and the angle you have to sew them up on blows my mind every time so totally worth it!! I did press the skirt before taking photos, but obviously I need to do that again! 🙃 Overall I am very happy and I think this one will actually get worn! Advice please? So, according to the measurements on the envelope of #s8447 these shorts should be too small at the waist and enormous at the hips… However, they are actually a bit loose at the waist and not too bad at the hips! I was thinking of removing excess at the waist by tapering the centre front and centre back seams. Is this a crazy idea or a good idea? Project 2: Overalls mashup My second attempt at overalls... A mashup of @simplicitymccallsaustralia #s8447 (shorts) and #m8162 (bib). Fabric is some kind of printed upholstery (??) remnant from @thenestcommunity . Has a little stretch. Just over 1 m of it 😅. Although the fabric is thick and felt sturdy, I discovered it rips pretty easily (photo 7), leading to some hasy patching here and there... I mocked up the shorts in a size 12 (same as my previous attempt) but it was far too big, so then I made it in a 10.... But to my horror when I finished sewing, it no longer fit!! So I did a quick and dirty gusset down one side (photo 6) and fudged the buttons a little and managed to save it that way 🫣. It doesn't always go to plan 😅. Done!! I’m calling this #wearabletoile from 1940s trousers #s8447 a win even though there are some serious fit issues… As you can see, I could do yoga if I wanted to and kung fu if I knew how, so I guess that’s good… But the sizing on this pattern is totally nuts! I removed 60mm from the waist, even though it should’ve been 40mm too small according to the measurement on the pattern, and the crutch is sitting far too low. I did actually check the crutch measurements, but I really wasn’t sure where it was meant to sit for this style?? But now that I can wear the garment, I reckon I need to remove about 40mm from the rise…. as you can see, there is a lot of excess fabric around the bum and crutch area! But I guess this is why we make a toile! 😮🙃😮 Overall I am super happy with my waist adjustments and the placement of my #patternhacking #weltpockets 🙂🙂🙂 Almost exactly 4 years ago, I made a dress from this fabric for my birthday and now I have these funny shorts. So I’m thinking of testing the fit of these re-issued 1940s trousers by making shorts from this bower bird fabric… I either have just enough or just not quite enough🙃😮🙃 According to my measurements the size 16 is going to be too small at the waist, but when I measure the pattern it looks like it should be okay? #theblackcountrylivingmuseum #sewnwithbig5july @simplicitymccallsuk We are going to a 40s day today.I have made the overalls using #s8447 from a blue gaberdine from @poundfabrics .I had to cut the bodice twice .I should fit according to the pattern in a size 16 for measurements but it was too small.So I ended up cutting a size 20 and it took some fitting.I did my usual crotch depth alterations to fit my personal preference.And added leg length as I am 5ft 11" and have long legs.The blouse is a favourite to make @fridaypatterncompany #sagebrushtop .Overall pretty happy with the finished look

Please excuse the fact that I staunchly refuse to iron except on rare occasions. Been hoarding fabric for this for ages and made it a couple of months back. Apart from the external pockets the coat has welt pockets in the lining specifically sized for my phone and airpods, plus a bonus one for a book. Adding the back vent to the pattern took so much brainpower. The waistcoat has internal pockets for ice packs so I can semi regulate my body temperature outdoors when summer hits (yay for POTS induced heat intolerance). • • • Coat is a modified @simplicitymccallsaustralia #S8139, waistcoat is a heavily modified #M8133, and the pants are #S8447. The bow tie was self drafted and the shirt I bought from @targetaus years ago when I needed to immediately replace my wardrobe with allergy friendly things. The main coat fabric is a dead stock cotton twill from @wearethefabricstore, the linen check I used for the lining is from @tessutifabrics The pants and the waistcoat is all linen from #thefabricstore, the lighter brown was a seconds so I picked it up cheap. • • • #sewing #memade #pots

🌻Best. Thing. I've. Made. Yet.🌻 Okay, they aren't perfect, but I would wear them every day anyway. They're ridiculous and I adore them. These are from the 1940s workwear overalls pattern, #simplicity #s8447 . I need to comment that the ease suggested in these is wild. I went down a size from my measurements, and if I did the pants view (which I plan to), they'd need to be brought in or taken down another size at least. I did do a toile, which is very unlike me, and made some adjustments, including taking two inches out of the back of the bib, but they've still come up a little bigger than I intended. I would go down another size next time.. annoyingly, @simplicitymccallsaustralia had no overlap in their patterns, and my measurements put me between the lower size set pattern and the higher set and the higher, so I would need to try to grade the pattern down myself (which I already did for the shirt) or buy the smaller set. That said, the overalls being large are very practical in that I easily can get on the floor with my kids (both at home and at school!), they're super comfortable, and I think they still look alright! I drafted my own pockets, which I adore. I travelled overseas in these and could easily fit my passports, phone, wallet, headphones and charger in them - amazing. 😂 Fabric is a daisy cotton duck from @spotlightstores which I just love. 🎀🍓Strawberry Blouse🍓🎀 Garment 4 of my capsule wardrobe. Eek I love this blouse and the combo with the trousers is as good as I hoped it would be 🥰 The amazing blouse fabric has a border print so I used the main polka dot part for the front and back bodice pieces, and then the gingham + strawberry print for the little wrap over sleeves and the ruffley chest area. Despite having made this blouse a few times I managed to make the arm holes too small but after adjusting them the fit is pretty good again. I should have taken a close up of the sleeves because they're so cute, like little cross overs on the top so it's like a petal effect. It's buttoned up the front but you can barely tell because I managed to find a handful of little buttons in basically the exact shade of blue! Still posting things I have made ages ago and more recently in black. I made a waistcoat in summer with internal pockets so I could put ice packs in it (hereby helping somewhat with my POTS temperature disregulation for the hour it takes them to melt). Well, it turns out I have quite a few more than 9 things I want to make this year...but I’ve just taken a sampling to create a #makenine2020 collage. I just picked this up...yesterday? #thevintagefashionchallenge Day 9: 1940s I love the 1950s styles, but I admit I have a big soft spot for the 1940s style! The seventh photo is of my maternal grandparents on their wedding day in June of 1946. My Grandpa's brother and my Grandma's sister, who are standing at their sides, were married on the same day a year later! The last photo is my Grandma's wedding dress, which is a simple post-war wedding dress, which has lost its color due to age and being dyed in the 1970s to be worn as my aunt's prom dress. More checks? Check! Today was cold so Stitch and I have been wearing matching long socks and sweaters. Weirdly enough, Stitch loves socks- he holds his feet out to get them on, and pokes his tongue out. On the rare occasion he’s not in the mood to be wearing socks, he gets his front feet and pushes them away. Comfy fit today (pre the first blood test of the year- now I am languishing on the couch with electrolytes) • • • Top (reversible!) is self drafted in floral hail spot cotton- conveniently used all the remnant plus had just enough for the usual matching face mask and dog scarf. Pants are @simplicitymccallsaustralia #S8447 in slate linen (I made these more than a year ago but don’t think they ever made it on the Insta) And then the cross strap bra top is a modified #S1426 in a cotton silk dobby. Not that anyone will see the whole thing but it’s front closing which is helpful for both my spine pain and limited arm motion and I genuinely want to know why that’s not a more common thing because it’s so much easier! My favourite pants! And a scrappy test shirt. #s8447 Simplicity 1940s work pants, view c - sized down two sizes from the pattern's suggestion as I didn't want 5.5" ease in the waist since I will wear them as regular trousers, not over-wear. The top is a toile of #s8506 which is a 1930s sleeve set. I just used the bodice base with an enlarged neckline so I could pull it over. I love these pleated sleeves, so I look forward to playing with them more! I feel like a stylish elementary school teacher in the 90s in this outfit! 😂 I’ve been wanting to make a vest forever and the Hartwell Vest was so fun to make. The tutorial by @tomkatstitcherycarmel was really helpful for my first ever welt pockets…they were easier than I thought they’d be. I didn’t make any fit changes at all and used a quilt cotton for the lining which I think makes it a little snugger than it would be otherwise. The skirt is the Ingrid Skirt with the shaped waistband that I boned with plastic boning. This skirt pattern is definitely a winner and I *love* the boned waistband. The blouse is from Simplicity 8447. I’ve made the trousers from this pattern several times, but decided to try the blouse. I shortened the sleeves and made a 2” full bicep adjustment. I was very wary of the weird pleat thing at center back, but I actually don’t mind it when it’s tucked into a skirt. I’ve already make a second one (with no pleat) to see if I like that better. It is just a really nice 1940s style blouse. I have finished my first project with my new sewing machine! She runs like a dream, as they say, and we're calling her Beattie Bernina, after my Grandma's Aspley. Beattie appears in the 1911 census as a tailor's apprentice in Dorchester. A decade later, she married my Grandad and moved to the Midlands, where she put her sewing skills to use to earn a few extra pennies for the family, then when my Mum Iris married her son Wilf in 1944, she taught her to make do and mend, and together they clothed my brothers. I feel privileged not only to be the heir to these family skills, and to hand them on to the next generation, but to live in an era where I get to use beautiful fabrics and own a fancy sewing machine. So it's only fitting that the first project Beattie and I have made together is this 1940s blouse from a reproduction Simplicity pattern. The fabric is Liberty tana lawn from my stash and the buttons are from Beattie's button box.
