Last project of 2021 and I made #S8056 with mystery fabric from @fabricmart , if they could tell me what it is I'd love to know! The waistband came out a little bulky due to the thicker fabric but the pants will be warm and soft. If I use this fabric again I'd line the waistband in lining not the main fabric. Another tick one the #makenine2024 (3 out of 9 now) grid is some smart work trousers that actually fit! I used #simplicitypatterns #s8056 ‘amazing fit’ pattern and cut initially to a size 18 and graded heavily in at the waist during the fitting process which I found very useful. The result is a very comfy and wearable@pair of smart troos that are hopefully versatile enough to tempt me away from my black skinnies. Now I know how to get the fit, I’m planning a shorter pair in a lighter fabric for summer. These are in a lovely light wool from #fabworksmillshop @fabworksmillshop

They are done! Should I try to do a styled photo with my tripod outside?? Probably. Will I get to it quickly? Not this weekend. I’m definitely not feeling great, so I’m not going to get fully styled but did want to share. I’m Bivalently boosted (a couple of weeks ago) so the negative tests so far aren’t surprising me and I’m expecting it’s just a cold. Anyhow, this is the finished pair of #s8056 trousers using some Tencel Twill. I believe it was labelled as Tencel Twill II - Telio If I recall correctly - and I got it from @pacificfabrics back when their location that was near our Seattle Home closed (I’m still sad about that…). I used my beginner’s understanding of #topdowncenterout to fit this pair - and it’s a method that does work for my way of thinking and I’m pretty happy with my first try at this method — so I will try it with the next pattern on my list in my journey to restock the trousers in my closet. This time, I only fit the shorts and just transferred the changes to the full length, next time I’ll fit the full length as I think that will be more accurate. This fabric was so light I decided it would work better as a 7/8 length trouser - it’s not a pair I expect to wear mid-winter but I’ll probably get some good use out of them over then next several weeks. To be honest, in general, I hate the big 3/4/5’s degree of ease so I’m tending away from them lately but I am happy with how these turned out so I’m glad I had access to this pattern box. I have some more fabric to get washed so I plan to make a second pair - full length this time - before this pattern gets put away for others. Oh, I didn’t have any hooks and bars in my stash (that I can find) so I used a silver tack button and did a buttonhole. Opened #simplicity8056 amazing fit this afternoon and I’m stumped! So, I’ve chosen my size from my measurements but the slim/average/curvy fit guide crotch lengths are all too small. I know I have a long body but I don’t know what’s for the best in terms of choosing a fit...my hip and waist sizes are bang on size 16 so does that make me average? Or should I go for the curvy with the longest crotch length? I assume I should lengthen the rise but there isn’t a specific line to do this from...do I draw it below the pocket? Do I go through fly and use a longer zip? 🤔 It’s been too long since I last made trousers. 😐

I’ve been finding work is crazy (healthcare… ya’all it’s crazy times right now…), so bedtime is sometimes as soon as I’ve tucked my kids in. This is putting a cramp into my nightly sewing studio time. But I need trousers so I’m trying to go out even for a short time as often as I can. I have to say I am pleased at the systematic nature of #topdowncenterout - this is my almost finished #s8056 - I need to hem and to do a button and buttonhole. This is not something I can do tonight because it would break a personal sewing rule: No buttonholes after 10pm or when I’m tired. Also I apparently forgot to adjust the length on the pattern because these are so long it’s silly. Oops. I’ve used such a light fabric I may make them the shorter length - more capri length. Overall I’m satisfied with the fit of this method and am pleased it only took one toile. Next time I’ll toile the full length trouser - I can see more tweaks to the back of this pattern that I may have caught If I’d done a muslin of the full length (like how long they are). I’m also annoyed at the waistband (my sewing was not to my standard - not the pattern) but figure my need for trousers is higher than my desire to redo the waistband so I’ll likely plan my outfits to minimize how much it shows 😉. I have more fabric that would work well for this pattern so I may make another pair here soon. But I’m really wanting to make jeans - making them is so satisfying — I want to make them so much that I’m watching and rewatching jeans sew alongs. I made a pair of pants that fit perfectly, without a bunch of alterations to the pattern. Other than grading between sizes, I made a length adjustment and a crotch adjustment. This pattern, Simplicity 8056, is an older one, that has been in my collection for a couple years. Progress on my #s8056 trousers. Dan and I watched a hilariously bad movie - ideal for bad movie night - and I finished truing up the seams of my altered pattern and cut out the pattern pieces. This is some tencel twill I’ve had in my stash for years so it’s not precious. Same with the pocketing. It may be a bit lightweight for the upcoming season but if I like the fit, I have some wool suiting that I’ll use. I’ve used this fabric for shorts before and it works so I think they will be useful for a little while at least before I need more cooler weather trousers. Pattern adjustments I made using #topdowncenterout was slight to the front at the waist but nothing to the back - other than to to true the pattern. I didn’t have to slash and spread, no hinge points at the seams etc. The extra seam allowances I added to allow me to play with that muslin were probably too generous for my needs so next time I’ll consider using less - I wanted extra to give me flexibility. #sewistsofinstagram #sewist #seattlesews #bcsews #canadasews #mapleridgesews #topdowncentreout #memade #womancavethesheshed

pant dreams come true ≐ I was so inspired by the new range of @stagnistudio so I tried to recreate one of their looks. I wasn’t game to draft my own for that one, so I used @simplicity_creative_group #8056 and added a seam line along the travellers crease. (Is that the right word? The front seam on each leg, is it called a princess seam?) I cut a size 14 which ended up fine around the hips & length but about 6inches too wide at the waist band. This pattern gives 3 options - slim, average and curvy. I cut the average fit, and the way the pattern and waistband are constructed makes it really easy to make adjustments. I took 1 inch out the front & back at the waist side seam and tapered it out at the pocket, and 1 inch out of each side at center back waist. And I have to say the fit turned out amazing!! This was going to be a wearable #toile for a suit I’m planning, so I used cheap #rayontwill from @lincraft that I got on sale. I’m really loving the fabric & colour, so I think I’ll get some more to make my matching blazer. And I’ll save my special #spike Eukalyptus fabric from @drapersfabrics for another special project. Or I might make two suits, so I can wear them on rotation ⟳ ⟳ ⟳ 🙌🏼 Now I just have to find a matching blazer pattern. I’ve made the @simplicity_creative_group #8697 heaps of times and it’s a great shape - but the fabric is so light, that I’ll need to interface it - so I think a blazer with lining would be better suited. Happy new year !! I’m jumping on the #make9 bandwagon this year, although I have hundreds of planned projects always swimming around my brain, hopefully I can get these done! I’m not holding myself to the original patterns / fabric choices, it’s more the function to be fulfilled, but some inspiration. 1) a floaty summer dress. I know this #simplicity8014 works well for me in viscose so these seem like a good choice 2) a swimming costume. It might be one of two pieces but must be shorts. I love the ruching and miriad of options on the #radpatterns #firstcrushswimsuit and I already have this pattern. Fabric to be purchased! 3) a brocade dress. This is definitely the fabric I bought from #samueltaylorsleeds and probably view D of the #v9239 4) I’m making my hubby some pjs - will probably use the free #ellieandmac pattern. Woven trousers and knit top. 5) strappy summer dress - I’m thinking view c of the #s9742 - possibly in batik .. 6) jeans. Yet to decide. Fabric yet to be bought! 7) tailored work trousers in this stretch grey linen from #northernmonkeymakes to match my suit jacket. Maybe #s8056, need to toile these first. 8) boys shirt in this gorgeous train fabric. I don’t have the pattern yet but will got for something like the #wavesandwild sunset shirt 9) velvet jacket using tried and tested #s8844 and black herringbone velvet - this has been on my to do list most of 2023! Let me show you my new trousers! So chuffed how they came out!!! A huge thank you has to go to @winmichele, who not only has ace tutorials about trouser sewing in her stories, but was also kind enough to write back with an encouraging comment when I contacted her via DM for help. What a star! I chose the Simplicity 8056 pattern, because it comes in a variety of shapes. I found that even the curvy pattern was not curvy enough for me and had to extend the hook width both front and back by a scary amount. That was back in May/June. As I have been loosing weight this year, I waited for it to stabilise before starting on the trousers. I had to shave quite a bit off the width, compared to June. But I thought the muslin was still close enough not to have to start from scratch again. I followed the @tomkatstitcherycarmel tutorial on how to sew the trousers. The zip fly tutorial was good, apart from having to sew the under lap to virtually nothing. I’ll change that next time. @mellysews seems to attach the underlay earlier in the proceedings, which I hope will make life a little easier. I skimmed down the legs of the pants towards the knee and then kept it pretty straight to the bottom. I am considering perhaps doing another pair where I keep narrowing the trousers to the ankle - only gently. On the other hand, I also have a demi birdseye fabric which might look better a little wider? The fabric is a white cotton drill I snapped up from @rainbowfabrickilburn for a song and dyed ‘jeans blue’ with @dylon_uk dye. Super easy and looks gorgeous. I’ll wash them separately, just in case... This is the first pair of trousers I own which fits at both hip and (true) waist!!! Super comfortable, even though the fabric has no stretch whatsoever. ❤️ . I won’t show you the inside, because this was a test run (although a very wearable one!) and I did not faff with the seams. 😜 . #s8056

First make (well I finished them today) of the year. Wearable toile of simplicity 8056 ‘amazing fit’ and they are a pretty good fit. Sewing for me is self-care. And it’s also productive — I am generally replacing my garments with handmade rather than shopping. To be honest, I don’t love shopping anymore - I prefer the quality and fit that I can achieve. But, I’ve got so many home projects on the go to get settled in our new house I’ve been struggling to focus on making. But I need to, because now that I’m moving my things into our renovated closet I’ve realized I have big gaps in my wardrobe and I’ve hit the the “I desperately need new trousers” stage. So I’ve started the fitting process for some wide leg trousers. I love sewing trousers (especially jeans) but I haven’t loved the muslin process, so once I get a pattern to fit I remake it and hack it so I can ignore making another muslin. I’ve been intrigued by the #topdowncenterout method that’s being taught. I set up my half-toile — thanks @thecrookedhem and @jsterndesigns your videos are so helpful - I am enjoying them. I just finished the fitting this evening - at least based on what I’ve learned so far - and I feel confident enough to make a pair of trousers. I didn’t take a photo of the half-toile while I was wearing them — I wasn’t wearing opaque tights and I won’t share *that* online. But it was a lot less frustrating than the usual pants fitting process I go through, so maybe I’ll start working through different patterns if this one is a reasonable success this quickly!
