Shades of grey! (Nowhere near 50!) I did not have the right one in my stash but found something perfect at my local independent sewing store! Yay! #shoplocal Today is all about taking the small wins! 🙂 I have done many modifications to this pattern and I really wasn’t sure if it was going to fit, but today I got this #wearabletoile far enough along that I think it will! Woo hoo!! The pattern called for gathers at the back, but in general I am not a fan of gathers so I went for a pleat. But tried an inverted pleat and I probably should’ve gone for the standard one because it looks better on the inside! Oh well! We know for next time… One of my many #patternhacks was to swap out the bust darts for waist darts. I find that on my figure the darts just end up being so long and parallel that it just looks awful. So far the waist darts are working well… but I think I might need to add a second eye shaped dart also, one that will align more directly with the bust point. But I’ll get the button band on before I tackle that, because at this stage the fit is still a bit of a guess … The pattern #s1538 called for hemming before putting the button band on and I have to admit I don’t think I’ve sewn anything for awhile that required hemming so early? My second make of 2025! I'm still looking for a sewing pattern to make classic button ups to not only wear to work but also out and about! This one checked most of the boxes and I added some details that then checked all of the boxes. This is my second make of this, first one was a toile and I'm still tweaking the pattern slightly to make it a perfect fit. Please excuse the wrinkled fit. I forgot to take a picture until I was about change into home clothes. 😅 Pattern: S1538 by @simplicity_creative_group Fabric: Poplin (95% cotton/5% spandex) from @joann_stores Notes: Sewed sized 6 for the arms and 10 for the body. I removed about half an inch to the length on the body and took in the back panel by half an inch. I added a 1/4 stitching detail to the cuffs and shoulder seams and added an extra button to the sleeve placket. Happy October 🍁🍂🍁 I have been off a few days and enjoying the beautiful colors of Connecticut. I did sew up this denim button up last week, Simplicity 1538 but it’s more about enjoying the season! It was seasonally cool yesterday and a perfect day to enjoy pumpkins, apple cider and apple fritters while taking in the scenery of the orchards. I have quite a few items cut out to work on in the next few weeks and am looking forward to sewing up some warm winter items. While the weather is nice though I am going to be enjoying the leaves, the food and the spirits! Never would I have thought that I would be making a button down shirt! But I did! Sew It Academy has been the best sewing investment. #sewitacademy #mimig #s1538

Done! This #wearabletoile is a much #patternhacked version of #s1538 made from a cotton sheet and #vintagebuttons gifted by the boyf… So #sustainablesewing ! 🙂 Before cutting, I adjusted the pattern for a forward shoulder adjustment, did a large bicep adjustment and also adjusted the sleeve for the shoulder adjustment, moved the bust dart to the waist and shortened the body by 2 inches/50 mm… While sewing I added an additional waist dart, removed about 10 mm from the arm scythe at the shoulder and lengthened the cuffs. I also did an inverted pleat at the back instead of gathers and added an additional pleat at the cuff… After all that I almost wonder if this qualifies as #selfdrafted ? And still, there are clearly issues with the fit. The neckhole is too large/collar too long…and I also think I need to add darts at the back neck line to compensate for a mild dowager’s hump. But I suspect there are other things going on so if anyone can analyse those draglines and give me some clues. I would love to hear them! 🙃🙂😮 I am aiming for the ever elusive fit which I call the #tailoredmuumuu which means it should fit at the shoulders and bust without being tight and skim in the tummy. This seems to be working pretty well on the front bodice and the result is kind of hilarious in that it looks like a men’s workshirt with plenty of room for a matron‘s middle-aged bosom !!! I do appreciate a bit of humour in clothing!! and just a quick note on the total craziness of the sizing on this pattern. I cut a size that was officially 2 sizes too small and still there was plenty of room at the bust, but even though I cut a small size the neck is huge… The picture of the pattern indicates a kind of slim fit men’s style shirt but it also includes 5 inches of ease! Cuffs are on! #slowsewing remains slow! 🙃 Sleeves were definitely too short on this #wearabletoile of #s1538 so I re-drafted the cuffs to compensate. Slow day… I had hoped to get some sewing done today but so far all I have managed is to cut out the paper pattern and to make large bicep, forward shoulder and length adjustments… sigh If I went by my bust measurement I would be a size 20, but this size is always too big elsewhere, esp at the shoulders… so I have cut a size 14 graded to a size 16 at the side and fingers crossed it works! I made one of my favorite shirt patterns again #simplicity1538 . I really wanted a chambray shirt like I keep seeing everywhere but, come on, there's no reason I can't make one. I am deciding whether or not to put pockets on it. I will have to make up my own if I do because I don't like the (lack of) shape of the pockets in the pattern. Oops, here's a double post of this shirt! Here are all the details this time. I had worn my previous floral print flannel shirt so much that it was getting thread bare, so I made myself a new one. I used Simplicity S1538 view D, with gathering into smaller cuffs, sized up to an 18. It feels just a little bit too big. Hello Lovelies! Happy Friday!⁠ ⁠ I've been working on this tiered skirt for some time now and I'm so glad it's finally done. It wasn't smooth sailing because I wasn't as focused as I should have been when completing this project. 😅⁠ ⁠ First, I tried the yarn method for the first time ever and of course, when I pulled to make my gather, half the yarn came out because I didn't secure it properly on the one end. 😣⁠ ⁠ Second, when I tried it on after I thought I was done, I seemed to have forgotten a whole tier because it was too short!! 😓I miscalculated somewhere. ⁠ ⁠ Third, I decided to add the last tier but refused to gather it! 😅 ⁠ But guess what? I cut the bottom tier too short around the circumference!!! 😡 So I had to sew in a rectangular piece to make it fit. Man, I was so mad at myself that I had to laugh because... Not the best mirror selfie, but you get the idea. I LOVE this shirt. It was so fun to make. It’s like a work of art. I love it when I just start putting things together, and then it turns out so good. The main fabric was thrifted quite a while ago and I wasn’t really loving it, but I wanted to use it for something. I bought the pattern for $1.99 the week Joann announced it was closing, just to stock up. When I realized I had the blue floral and the white and pink floral, and I thought they might all coordinate, it was like a match made in heaven. I love the pearl snaps, and the details. In prepping my Queue at the Zoo button front shirt (@simplicity_creative_group #s1538), I realized it would be extremely difficult to match the two front pieces and the placket. Since I had already done the alterations (FBA and shortening by 2”), I really wanted to stick with this pattern. So I attached the placket to the bodice front overlapping the seam allowances. I made a second piece for the mirror image. Then I folded the pattern pieces where the fabrics would meet. Next was the very careful placement to make sure the pattern was on the grain and that the fabric pattern was lined up for a matched front. Winter basics sewing. Love a pair of secret pyjama trousers that I can layer up with in the winter. This is @Stylearc pattern, Daisy designer Pant, I have previously made these in Linen, but this pair is a very heavyweight organic cotton Jersey from @merchantandmills Fabric bought earlier this year. I wish I had bought more as now, sadly, out of stock. I love the big faced hem and huge pockets on this design, as they hold a phone and other bits. On the actual pattern, make sure you cut the body long enough - the waist turnover is deep. Also, check that the pockets are not too far down the leg! Very #slowsewing continues… I made one more adjustment to #s1538 by moving the bust dart to the waist… Then I decided to switch fabric for this #wearabtoile to this lovely dark grey #secondhand cotton sheet. I have cut out all the pieces and have already raided my #vintagebuttons stash looking at options. My Beautiful Crazy outfit is crazy and beautiful to me 🩷 The shirt is the western version of #s1538 made from Indian madras. I love madras and the bias cut features of western shirts work so well with its unbalanced checks. I made the straight 14 with lots of shortening adjustments, yoke pleats instead of gathers and short sleeves with bias trim to match the placket. The sweet buttons are vintage from GG’s collection 💛. The frill skirt was a crazy adventure. The yoke is a comfy, old pair of jeans that I wore too much and grew out of. The crotch stitching was unpicked with care and hand stitched to preserve it. The frills are made from an old cheese cloth with embroidery detail that I’d had stashed after finding it in mum’s stash. It’s narrow, when washed and tumble dried it’s about 75cm wide, when stretched out it’s not quite 90cm, so gathered frills weren’t going to work. I upped the level of difficulty to flounces, which I’d never tried before, but oh wow, the beautiful maths to create them!! So little fabric, so many meters of flounce, so each tier is double layered. The structural fabric was also stashed and is a twill so it’s all very heavy and really needs the denim yoke. Though the best thing about the yoke is…. Pockets!! My project from the #asgatlanta summer retreat. I finished two of these at the @asgatlanta Sewing Retreat in January. This retreat was shorter and I made more mistakes. So just the one shirt. I had lots of people help when I had questions. Ann from the Macon chapter and Karen D. and Jenny T. from the Atlanta chapter. I learned I need to add a “forward shoulder point” adjustment to my list of adjustments on tops. I also learned it is really important to take notes as I do not remember exactly what I did 7 months ago. Pattern:Simplicity 1538. Note: cuffs are particularly large. This may be to easily cuff them. If you want fitted cuffs, you may want to reduce cuff and end of sleeve. If you want the flexibility of turning and wearing as a fitted cuff, use two buttons. You will not see them at the same time. Modifications: 3” FBA, 2” reduction in length of fronts and back. Fabric: Green fabric was in a giveaway pile at one of our meetings. The salvage said Amy Butler for Rowan by Westminster fibers soul, blossom collection and English garden or gardens. I made this #simplicitypatterns #s1538 shirt in a nice, lightweight chambray denim I got at Joann's. I made it this past year and it has gotten so much wear. It has now been washed and worn enough that it is very comfy and nice looking. I have used this shirt pattern multiple times and in two different sizes depending on the fit I want.
