So I’m pretty proud of this make. I really feel like I did a good job in terms of fit and finish. This is the first time I’ve made something from scratch for my boys. We’ve a holiday coming up and I decided holiday shirts would be a good project to practise plackets, collars, button holes and set sleeves. The pattern (Simplicity S8852) was easy to follow. I just needed to adjust the length. I picked up this cotton fabric from Pound Fabrics last summer and wish I had bought more. Perfect weight for this shirt robust cotton works so well to achieve crisp lines and structure to the shirt. I’m under instruction from my youngest to make another one in a Spiderman fabric. Its amazing how something as little as closure colors can change how something looks! . This is view C of Simplicity S8852, which is a short-sleeved button down shirt for kids. The original plan was to make one, but when I was cutting I realized I had enough fabric for 2! The parents of the receiving children made color choices for snaps. Yesterday I made Oliver a shirt. The pattern is simplicity #s8852 in size 3. The fabric is a cute little yellow honey bee cotton. This was a fun little project that came together quickly. It used just about a yard of fabric. I had gone to @joann_stores and bought last chance apparel fabric because it was 70% off so this cost only 3 bucks. Bringing you the second youngest fashionista of the family. This little guy had school pictures and guess who had outgrown all their button up shirts during Summer? So I did what any sewing mum would do…cruised the isles of multiple stores and then ultimately decided to make it the night before out of this dreamy Aussie Alps fabric from @elliewhittakerstudio and @elliewhittakerstore . Hand picked by the boy himself! He also asked for some matching shorts to his dad, so I thought why not, and he proudly modelled these at the @harmonyprovo fashion show on the past weekend since I used some LA deadstock twill from Harmony to make it. So when I showed him @tonyr.makers minion shirt I knew he would want one! 💫 So here’s my @emporia_patterns Tony Shirt made from a minions duvet for my husband! This pattern was a really quick make, it just took about a week for me to gear up to putting the buttons on and I’m so grateful that @connies_makes mentioned about using my machine to sew the buttons on as I hadn’t even realised my machine could do that! A wee out of season make! I made my boys holiday shirts for our trip back in October and only now getting round to posting. Picture Perfect! 🥰 Today on stories I shared how horrid my new passport photo is so to counter that picture here’s some of my offspring. #selflesssewapril23 was a hit! I successfully made my husband his first bespoke shirt by your truly! I have allowed myself to be so terrified of sewing men’s wear, and I had no reason to be! From there, my son got a matching shirt and baby girl got a matching dress, now if only I was able to get my garment made up in time for Eid, but alas we’ll be coordinated and fly for the next family outing! What Am I Working On Today? #waiwot Still the shark shirts… 🦈 I thought they would go faster 🤔 This wasn’t even going to be my submission for #slowseptember - the #magamsewalong theme for this month - but now I’m thinking it may qualify! 🤦‍♀️ Today I’m sharing a tip. It is probably the most obvious thing that everyone else in the world does routinely!!! But it hits me each time I run across these instructions in a pattern - which is why it is on my mind right now and why I decided to share. Why do most pattern instructions (especially the Big 4 that I am used to) tell you to sew an underarm sleeve seam FIRST and then fold it up, press it and hem it?? (picture 2) I think that is the hard way to do it - especially if the sleeve is small (like for a child’s shirt)! My tip is to press up the hem & press under the raw edge BEFORE sewing the seam. It is SO much easier to do this (and to do it accurately) while the sleeve is still flat rather than sewn into a tube! (pic. 3) Then I unfold it & stitch the seam. (pic. 4) Now the crease lines are already there & I can easily fold it up & topstitch the hem as per the instructions. Easy Peasy!! 👍 Like I said, most of you probably already do it in this manner all the time. But if you are following certain pattern instructions to the letter, you may be doing it in a more difficult way (in my opinion).😉 I decided to add the solid gray cotton to the placket as a trim. It should be the simplest thing to do! Seriously, it’s just sewing straight lines! But when the pattern isn’t designed for it, there is some math and figuring involved, 🧐 so it’s taking me a bit longer. That & the French seams are why it might qualify for a #slowseptember entry, right @morrissews @suestoney @sewing_in_spain ?? This is my #waiwot. What are you working on today? Is it Shark Week on TV? No, but it is definitely Shark Week in my sewing room!! 🦈❤️🦈 What Am I Working On Today? #waiwot These are Big Brother & Little Brother matching button-up shirts! Some thoughts: Pic. 1: A small piece of gray cotton in my stash looked like it would work well as trim on the placket and pocket. 👍 Pic. 2: I love how the French seams turned out!! The fabric holds a press well, making it easy to finish the seams this way! 👍 Pic. 3: I opted not to pattern match the pockets but instead just tried to get a full-size shark positioned on each pocket. Now I’m not sure that was the right decision. 🤔 Pic. 4: Why are all the sharks on the collar swimming straight down? - to find food? to get to cooler water? The answer to “Why” is because I followed the standard grain line placement. I should have placed the collar piece on the crosswise grain instead of the standard lengthwise grain. Duh! 🤦‍♀️ So I recut the top collar piece and I’m much happier! No one wants downward-swimming, semi-headless fish on their collar!! 😱Pic. 5. I should have been thinking of the design & not just the standard grain line. I love this adorable fabric - especially because it was designed by my niece! She is a fabulous artist in addition to being a hard-working college student! She has an entire collection available on Spoonflower.
