As soon as I spotted this gorgeous fabric in @dittofabrics in Brighton last year I instantly knew that I'd be using it to make a caftan. As I usually favour more fitted clothes, I'd never thought about making a caftan before, but the light airy feel of the fabric, the fresh shades of blue and white and the stunning print (which I later discovered is called 'Gardens of Versailles') all made it the perfect choice for a garment of this kind. I visualised myself wearing it as I strolled across a sandy beach on a Mediterranean island 🏝 I couldn't wait to wear my lovely new caftan when we travelled to Croatia earlier this year, but sadly it wasn't to be as it rained almost all the time we were there. Instead, I had to make do with wearing it one day in August whilst we were in Brighton again, so at least it got one outing this summer! The pattern I used was Simplicity 8657, which ranges in size from XXS to XXL. Now I know that caftans are meant to be roomy, but this pattern comes up absolutely HUGE! Firstly, I cut out the garment in the small size, but it resembled an oversized hospital gown, so I re-cut it to the XS size. Despite the fact that XS is intended for someone with a 30.5 to 31.5" bust and I'm a 34D, it still drowned me and looked extremely unflattering, so I ended up cutting a further couple of inches from the sides (not the sleeves) bringing it down to the XXS size, and I made a belt so that I could cinch it in at the waist, and finally I was happy with the fit. So my advice to anyone using this pattern is to think carefully about just how roomy you want your caftan to be, as you will most likely need to size down at least one, possibly two sizes. Despite all the cutting and re-cutting, once my caftan was made I was overjoyed with the end result, as I have a garment that is loose-fitting enough to be comfortable on a hot day, but also shapely enough that I don't feel like I'm wearing a tent! Of all the dresses I've made this summer, there are two that are my clear favourites. One is the tropical floral print dress, which I posted photos of recently, and the other (although I would never have thought it whilst I was making it!) is actually this one 💙

My second #syvsubmission features barkcloth and trim….lots and lots of trim. I added gathered sleeves with an elastic casing. I also added front and side vents for this look. I found inspiration from a targeted IG ad( I’ve included my inspiration pic in this set of pictures) The inspiration dress is from the brand Farmrio. The double trim is what caught my eye. I used a black and gold and then a wider cream and black embroidered trim to create my elevated caftan. I loved this month’s pattern and I think I’ll likely make two more before the summer is out. Adding the trim was the most time consuming because instead of using double sided tape to hold my trims, I carefully pinned and hand basted so that there would be no puckering. I find that tape sometimes puckers and pulls if I’m not careful. I also took my time to miter my corners and increased my stitch length. When I’m using bulkier trims, they lay smoother with a slightly longer stitch. This month’s #sewyourview is the perfect pattern for summer. An easy sew chock full of opportunities to add your own mark and personality. I added lantern sleeves with pom pom trim. I finished my hem with bias tape. Here is my entry for #sewrecreatethelook hosted by @jenlegg_teescreatives… I don’t normally enter competitions or challenges but I was going to make this dress anyway so thought why not?! My inspiration dress was one from Goose Island and there seem to be a few styles like this going round t’internet, either with a drawstring or shirred waist. Surprisingly, no-one seems to have made a pattern for them so I used @simplicity #s8657 which is designed to be hacked, as my starting point, and added some tiers. I also ended up adding back ties after the event as the top part is massive and falls off my shoulders! It turned out ‘ok’ - am not 100% delighted with it as I think I should’ve added a bit of width to the top of the skirt. Never mind - we live and learn! I hunted high and love for some patchwork style fabric and eventually found some on EBay which was some remnants in 3 pieces! Today’s featured sewists are Nikki (@thesewingprincipal) and Kikki (@2craftytwinchicks) from McKinney, Texas (USA). We grew up watching our mom sew for family and friends, and our dad reupholster furniture. Our dad first taught us how to create quilt blocks from old scraps. That was his way of keeping us busy during school breaks. It wasn’t until ten years ago that we started developing a love for sewing our own clothes. We love fabric shopping and going to Joanns, where we sit at a table, go through patterns, all while discussing fabric and notions. Our time at Joanns takes us back to pattern and fabric shopping with our mom at the old Krauss Department Store on Canal Street in New Orleans. Although we are twins, we are individuals when it comes to sewing. Kikki loves to hack and add embellishments to her garments, to create a unique look; and Nikki likes to maximize her time by sewing clothes that can transition from workwear to an evening of cocktails with friends. We have been following the @SewOver50 page for awhile. We are inspired by how Sewover50 showcases the differences we share as sewists and at the same time promoting that age is just a number. This is one of the reasons that Kikki and Nikki, along with 2 like-minded sewists founded @SewrorityWear. We wanted to create an inclusive community where sewists of all ages, races, etc. could come together, through a shared bond of sewing. Sewrority Wear not only sells paraphernalia, but we also host retreats, online sewing, and various events and activities. We (Kikki and Nikki) have also been featured in @SewnMagazine and plan to offer sewing and crafting classes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this fall. These are a hack of the #mnashjeans flares in a herringbone stretch denim from @fabricdotcom An attempt to dupe some I saw at Veronica Beard. The mods were pretty simple. I just cut a deeper waistband (finished depth of 21/4”, did 2 buttons instead of one and sewed up a belt. Easy peasy. And you may remember from my stories, I also eliminated the pockets. I just didn’t like seeing the outline of them. So I removed them and sewed the pockets shut.
