Fearless dress details! Pattern: @simplicitymccallsaustralia #S9297 Alterations: shortened, v-neck back added, straps moved in at back, my own bead placement + a lot of fitting adjustments. Fabric: gold lurex lame from @spotlightstores lined with satin from @d.k.fabrics Beads from @aliexpress Structure from @darncheapfabrics Photos by @elisemeznerphotography Some construction details: the dress is fully lined and the inner-bodice has firm interfacing sewn in. There are a few rows of boning in the top front and an elastic waist stay for some extra support. The beaded fringe came on gold ribbon which I bound in dress fabric (fused on with quilters tape). I machine-sewed on the rows of beads to the dress but hand-sewed the beaded strips on the straps and top to ensure they sat flat on my body. There was A LOT of hand sewing. Oh and, with all of those beads, the dress is very heavy. Presenting my Marcy dress! A few years ago, there was a #sewfrosting challenge that my friends and I decided to revive between ourselves during the 14(?) weeks of lockdown in Sydney this year. The challenge was to sew something over the top and fun that you wouldn’t normally wear- something to combat the lockdown blues. We had a vague theme of layers but from there you could do whatever you want! I knew immediately that I wanted to do something big, bold and colourful to channel the joy @marcyharriell brings! I’ve been wanting to use wax prints so I found this fabulous fabric from @authentique_collections_ on Etsy. I had originally planned to try boning but covid supply issues scuppered that so I used the bodice with straps from #s9297 (by @gertie18) and the skirt from #v1672. I added the ruffle at the bottom to use every inch of my 6 yards of wax print (and I don’t have an overlocker so did it with gathering stitches which took approximately 17 million years to do). ❄️ MIDWINTER BALL ❄️⁠ ⁠ Two weeks on and we’re still in awe of the amazing version of Simplicity 9297 (previously Butterick 6627) that Sylvia of @mrs_s_newnan created fort @MelbourneFrocktails!⁠ ⁠ With ice and snow as a theme, Sylvia used a heavy satin as the base and dip-dyed the tassels with ice blue to create this gorgeous icicle effect. I didn’t get many still photos of my #S9297 I made for my 20s party, but my coworker was kind enough to snap this one! The base fabric is from @fabricwholesaledirect and the fringe trim is from @trimsbytheyard. The beaded trim for the strap is from lacetrimfactory on Etsy. I also used spiral steel boning from my stash. This dress, while time consuming, wasn’t as hard as I had feared! There’s a few things I’d do differently if I made it again… but I think my need for a second fringe dress is pretty slim 😂 I’ll definitely have to find more occasions to wear this one, because I really like it. . Finished 10/26/24. I had such a wonderful night on Saturday @melbournefrocktails that I took very few photos. These are from one of my crew @nadiafaye. My dress is an @gertie18 design B6627 (now S9297) which I had wanted to make for the longest time. It was a stash buster - the base fabric being a heavy satin (maybe duchess?) I bought in bulk YEARS ago when the local @spotlightstores closed down and moved. The bow is a dance fabric I bought to make my son an Elsa costume! All the tassels were dip dyed to match my ice and snow theme - it was a Midwinter Ball after all - and I’m proud of how it turned out. Our girl gang had a very vintage princess vibe and I was there for it!! Thank you so much to @melbournefrocktails and all the amazing people I met and chatted to. My @sewcial_sewing entry for #frocktobersewingcompetition2023 is the dress I made for @melbournefrocktails 2022. I like to challenge myself when sewing for an event like this, so I tackled a pattern I’d been wanting to make for a while - #s9297 - but modified it to full length. Frocktails was a mid winter ball last year, so I wanted to run with that theme and make this dress like a flurry of snow and icicles. The base fabric was a #stash duchess satin in a crisp snow white. A princess seamed bodice, lined and fully boned with spiral steel. I dip dyed the fringing to get it a faint glacial blue at the ends. I had diamanté straps to glisten like ice, a fresh fluffy snow like stole and an iridescent blue ‘frozen’ bow at the back. With my hand made crystal, pearl and bead hair piece, I felt like a snow Queen and was very happy with how the dress came out.

After going down a rabbit hole of clothing inspired by art pieces for the Mondrian dress I made this- it’s inspired by Carlos Amorales’ Black Cloud which I was lucky to see last year. There are around 150 different endangered and critically endangered Lepidoptera species (moths and butterflies) on here- and around 500 butterflies in total (I lost count somewhere along the way). All were drawn to scale by me and cut out of silk scraps ironed to black cotton interfacing using my Dad’s @cricut_anz. Each was hand stitched on to the dress in a painstakingly long process involving a lot of swearing. • • • Linen is a dead stock linen sateen from @wearethefabricstore Silk scraps are from @tengdahlaustralia Cotton interfacing is from @circularsourcing Dress pattern is a hybrid of four skirt panels from @simplicitymccallsaustralia #V8729 and the bodice from #S9297 with the back altered to be a corset back. This duo took way longer than I budgeted for but it was absolutely worth it! The dress is Simplicity 9297 View B without the fringe and replacing the rhinestone straps with bias fabric straps. The belt is a modified Waspie from Gerties Patreon. What I did to get a lip shape is I inverted the top, rounded off the bottom and flattened the top of the back. The fabric was a 2 yard pre-cut fabric I got on BOGO Memorial Day weekend at JoAnn Fabric. I'm so happy with how this set came together.
