Having a blast playing with Simplicity 9891, a cargo skirt pattern. It calls for three D Rings to be sewn around the waistband (2 in back, 1 in front). That made me think of rucksacks with various straps and hardware so I pulled out every black plastic closure in my button drawer. I have lots of inherited notions I can't wait to finally use. The back pocket was on the small side. I made it larger, and copied the placement from a pair of wide-legged RTW pants. Nothing new off the sewing machine, but I couldn’t resist sharing today’s outfit because I just loved how it came together! With the heat cranking up, I thought a dip at the beach would be the perfect escape… until I remembered post-storm swims aren’t exactly a great idea (thanks, water pollution ). When I first started working in the film industry I felt terribly insecure. I felt that wearing interesting clothes signaled to everyone you were an ameture. The weathered hardcore film crew members wore jeans, old t-shirts and black hoodies. Any colour and style suggested you were green and ill-prepared for the ‘traveling circus’ life. Having stepped out of the industry for a few years and now coming back, I somehow defaulted back to that idea. I was convinced that I can’t wear any of my arty clothes to the film set. I was feeling very insecure again. Day 1 on set I wore my new cargo pants I specifically made for film work and a dark-ish jumper. Boring for me, but it felt appropriate. Day 2 I decided - ‘stuff it, I need a bit of spark’ and I wore my stylish metallic linen cargo pants but paired them with another simple darkish jumper. Day 3 was announced on the call sheet as “an orange day”, but I still wasn’t convinced. I stayed with the metallic pants, but bravely added a bold-ish jumper and a pair of bright orange earrings. When I got to work I was astonished to see crew members wearing orange skirts and floaty shirts and big hats! It finally dawned on me that I got it all wrong! Times have changed! Many more women are working in some hardcore crew roles. Many creative women who love creative outfits. My views on what a hardcore crew member should look like were completely wrong and outdated. Day 4 I wore my orange skirt and an arty jumper with bold leggings and I felt me again!
