Happy sewing Sunday! This is my first pattern copy! I have never before used my ready to wear to copy and make a pattern. After sewing diligently for the last 8 years I know you might find this hard to believe! I rarely buy ready to wear clothes anymore, but this fall was shopping with my mom as she visited over Thanksgiving. We found this gorgeous viscose/wool blend sweater, which I have had in regular rotation ever since. I wore it to sewing class one evening and the amazing @sewdesignstudiov (Veronica) admired it and said we should copy it. It was soooo easy! We laid the pattern on the cutting table and then put the pattern paper on top. We then traced around the edges of the pattern, shored up the edges using a ruler, added seam allowance and voila- instant usable pattern! I was so excited, I cut out two different versions- the purple is leftover wool knit and the blue is a lightweight cotton knit, both from @voguefabrics. I styled both with my favorite cropped version of #v9282. The whole process from copying to cutting to sewing both versions was only about 4 hours. So easy that I actually agreed to make one for one of my pals (which I almost never do!). What patterns have you copied? And were they as easy as this one? I need to put a better waist band on these #v9282 pants. It’s too low (I did it myself!) and I think I’d like a straighter, higher waistband with a button or hook. This waist is actually just the facing turned outside instead of inside so there should be a little seam allowance there to work with. Happy sewing Sunday!!! Cold and snowy here, but I think a silk charmeuse faux jumpsuit is still just what I need right now!!! After my successful run at a Kelly green faux jumpsuit this summer using both #v9282 for the pants and #v9109 (a more fitted version) for the top, I decided to try my hand at a dressy silk charmeuse option. I purchased this gorgeous stretch silk charmeuse fabric @moodfabrics during my 50th birthday trip to nyc this November. I remember it being more expensive, but when I looked at my receipt they charged me $25/yard. Now it is only 45 inches wide, but still! So the whole outfit cost me $125, and I still have almost a yard left to make another coordinating top for a different look (haven’t figured out that part yet!). I am calling it my “fab and 50” outfit. I will always remember this occasion! Silk charmeuse is rapidly becoming a favorite to sew and wear. These pants are like wearing pajamas!!! I wore them to school this week with the cream sweater and got tons of compliments. The pants are lined with rayon bemberg (from @voguefabrics), and I used French seams and hand stitched matching silk bias tape to finish the tank. I am super proud of the finished result and feel very glam in my new look! Happy sewing Sunday! This is now my third version of @burda_style #102 from the 8/2022 issue of the magazine. I was a huge turtleneck person as an east coaster (born in Baltimore) coming of age in the 70s and 80s. My friends in college used to make fun of me because I wore them so much! Fast forward 30 years and my stash of turtlenecks are back!!! I think I need a few more of these in the closet too… This one is made from a gorgeous wool jersey from @metrotextilesnyc. The fabric is super lightweight and soft, but still quite cozy and warm. I have about a yard and a half left of my 3 yard cut, so I think a slouchy t-shirt for summer will be just the ticket! As I said before, the zipper is what truly sets this pattern apart. I again interfaced the zipper area, hand basted in the zipper and then finished with machine stitches. Now it is pretty much perfect! The pants are my usual favorite #v9282 pattern in a gorgeous silk wool from @moodfabrics. I have more of this fabric as well and need some ideas for what to do with it. ✨✨Social Media Takeover Day 2//✨✨ Greetings Sewing Friends! Today I would like to showcase my favorite TBT (tried but true) Vogue Pattern, the incredibly versatile #V9282. As you can see, I have made MANY versions of this pattern over the years from the cropped version to the full length. I have made these pants out of everything from structured denim to flowy silk/wool. I love how now that I have the fit adjusted perfectly, I can make multiple versions, and each one looks different from the last because of the unique fabrics that work with this pattern. Using only 2.5 yards of fabric, these pants can be incredibly affordable compared to their VERY pricey ready-to-wear counterparts online. These were actually the first pair of pants I ever made–at the recommendation of my sewing teacher Veronica @sewdesignstudiov. She told me that wide leg, flowy pants with so many seams (eight in all!) are very easy to fit and sew. Seven years later I am still making them, and she was obviously correct! Happy summer sewing Friday! When I saw others posting the @estelladress by @papercutpatterns, I knew I had to have it. For me the worst part of the smaller pattern companies is the dreaded pdf pattern. I find myself having to really love a pattern before I am willing to spend precious sewing time cutting and pasting those printed sheets together. Last summer I purchased, printed and taped together all the pieces of this pattern and then put it in a pile and promptly forgot about it. I pulled it out of the pile this summer as I thought it would be the perfect complement to my high waisted #v9282 white pants. I had written notes last year about adding an inch of length to the top so it wasn’t so cropped. At the time, I had not seen the photo (attached here) showing just HOW cropped that top is! So I proceeded to sew up the top adding just 1 inch to the length. After I had nearly finished it, I tried it on for size and realized that indeed 3 inches of my upper midriff was still showing even with my newly created high waisted pants. Not a good look for my nearly 50 year old self! Alas creativity had to set in. I had used this gorgeous ice blue linen which I purchased at one of the coupon shops during last summer’s trip to Paris. I was not going to simply trash this project. So I ripped out the elastic casing at the bottom and drafted a new bottom layer and facing, extending the top the necessary 3 inches. I didn’t feel like also extending the ties at this time, so there is a gap there where the front section extends further than the back, but I think it still works. I love that you can wear this top both ways- wrapping in front or back. Happy sewing Sunday! I tend to sew outfits for the season I am in. I just need that instant gratification! Very occasionally I sew a season ahead or make something while in Florida that has drastically different weather than we have here in Chicago. Despite that tendency, I did sew up this gorgeous chocolate colored silk charmeuse from @sewmuchfabric into my new favorite pattern #v8926 view A. I learned a lot about cutting and sewing with silk during my last endeavor and used the same methods here. I washed the fabric in silk wash (eucolin) and then hung it to dry. As I pressed it, I sprayed with spray starch so it wasn’t so slippery. This was fine since I planned to wash it. I used French seams with all seams which have a beautiful and sturdy finish. I also painted all seam edges with fray check so they would be even more sturdy and not fray within the seam (a tip from someone online so thank you!). I sewed an extra small but then graded out to a small at the hips. As this is a wrap top the sizing is a little forgiving. I am super happy with the result. This fabric was so amazing to feel as I was sewing it. I have definitely tackled my fear of silk! More soon! Ps. Happy Sewing Sunday! As I mentioned last week, I initially planned to make view A of #s9746, but then found the two overlapped and gathered bodices unflattering. As such I had this extra bodice and didn’t want it to go to waste (especially after I did all that altering!). I consulted my amazing sewing teacher @sewdesignstudiov about options, and we agreed a shirred waistband would work. She recommend making channels for 1/4 inch elastic rather than trying to zig zag elastic in and pulling the gathers. She was right (as usual), and I have the shirred effect here while making it a much easier sew. To make the band, I cut 2 pieces of the upper ruffle (instead of the 3 the pattern calls for) in a 5 and 1/4 width to finish at 2 inches folded including 5/8 seam allowance at both edges. I then added two 3/8-inch channels to thread the 1/4 inch elastic through. The finished length is perfect for all my high waisted pants without any of my middle aged midriff peeking out ;). The pants are my usual favorite #v9282. The fabric for the top is a crisp mid weight cotton from @moodfabrics and the pants are made from a cotton canvas from @voguefabrics. I have been busy with school and my upcoming 50th birthday celebrations. Can’t wait to join the #sewover50 community on Tuesday!!! Hoping to have more sewing time this week. Happy sewing Sunday! We had summer like temps last week here but this week are back to winter (maybe snow tomorrow!), so I am still finishing up some winter projects before moving into lighter fare. I made my latest version of #v9282 out of a gorgeous dark stretch denim from @voguefabrics. I have worn these countless times since I made them about 2 months ago. The fit is just perfect, and I love the high waist and wide legs. Every pair i make is slightly different from the last with different lengths, fabrics etc. This pattern is so versatile! Now that I have all these high waisted pants, I am in need of some more cropped tops that hit right at the waistline for the most flattering silhouette. I saw this faux Sherpa fleece top from Athleta on the Thredup website and thought it would do the trick. When it arrived it had potential but was way too broad at the hem and about 3 inches too cropped for me with my long torso. I added two darts to the back to draw in some of the fullness and then added a 3 inch rib knit border to the hem to match the cuffs. I got the rib knit from Etsy and it is close to a perfect color match. With the alterations this top is just perfect with my new pants. Yay for sewing hacks! Have a great week all! Happy summer sewing Wednesday!! I am very late to the sewing party in finally making the cute and versatile #s9679 top (view b). Another scrap buster, view b uses only 3/4 yard of fabric! Because I purchase so many 3 yard cuts, I often have a yard or less leftover and nothing to do with it but pile it up in my sewing room!! I had a yard of this cotton jersey knit from @voguefabrics from a top I made years ago. I like how this casual fabric with the unique cut of this top can still be really striking. I made a size 10 through the bust and graded out to a 12 at the hip. The fit is perfect. I like the shorter length finishing at 22 inches which for me means there isn’t too much bulk to tuck in. This is a super easy and quick sew other than the challenge of working with different kinds of knits. For this version because the knit was pretty stable, I did not add interfacing to the hems (only to shoulder seams) and did not use a zig zag. Initially I thought this top was going to get relegated to the workout pile, but then I played around with styling and found it actually goes with a lot of my other me made items! Specially I pulled out the Rachel comey linen pants I made from #r10568 that I never wear for some reason and my new favorite version #v9282 in cotton canvas. I am making a small dent in my stash and using up some old scraps with this pattern so yay me! Happy sewing Sunday! I am officially back at school for another year teaching 7th grade math. This brings lots of joy of meeting new faces and finding out what makes them tick- but also lots less time for sewing and taking pics of my sewing projects! Alas, I will still make some time each week to sew and share when I can! This is another of the projects I finished while vacationing in Vermont. I figured I had made so many pants that I should make some tops to go with! This is my second version of #s9679 this time view A. The fabric is a super soft rayon jersey from @voguefabrics in Evanston. The color is a gorgeous navy which goes with half my wardrobe! I was immediately attracted to the dramatic sleeve and unusual cutout in this pattern. While I love the results of this make, the sleeve by the cutout does tend to fall off my shoulder since it is quite heavy and next to the cutout so there isn’t much to hold it up. Next time I might reinforce the cutout with some interfacing to make it more stable to support the heavy sleeve. Happy sewing Sunday! Are you sick of this pants pattern yet? Hopefully not because I have more in the works! I just can’t get enough of the wide leg style of #v9282. This version is made from a gorgeous luxury wool from @voguefabrics. The fabric has the most beautiful drape and flow when I walk- instant glamour! For this version I dropped the crotch depth 1/2 inch which works for the fabric with more flow. I raise the depth up when I use fabric with more structure. I have worn these pants countless times since I finished them over the holiday break. They are super warm and yet I feel glamorous and put together as soon as I put them on. I love the added waistband for this style of pant. I added that feature and I feel like it makes the pants look more polished. They also stay in place better! The blouse if a gorgeous silk Vince blouse I got for $50 at a consignment store. Score! It also goes with everything! Happy sewing Wednesday all! I am madly prepping as many patterns as I can to sew during my three week vacation in Vermont. My wifi up there in the northeast kingdom is spotty at best, so I am going to post a bunch before I go and then when I return! Bear with me! I wore this outfit while in Paris and felt super glamorous (even while carrying a nerdy American backpack) as I visited Montmartre- the Mecca of fabric shopping!!! The top is #121 from @burdastyle magazine 6/2022. This was one of the first things I made this summer and have worn it several times since. The fabric is this gorgeous linen knit from @voguefabrics which drapes and breathes beautifully keeping me cool and comfy on my travels. This top was a super easy sew, but I did have to take it in in the bust area quite a bit so it didn’t fall down when wearing it. Alas those of us with small busts are so afflicted! Happy sewing Sunday! The warm weather persists here, so I am finishing up some summery projects before the weather cools off. I know that cooldown is inevitable in Chicago! This is my second version of this top #n6620, this time in view b. The fabric is a super stretchy rayon knit from @voguefabrics, so I stabilized the seams with knit interfacing before sewing and used a narrow zig zag. In the end I am not sure it was all necessary, but I think it works in this case. The pants are my fave #v9282 that I made last summer before my trip to Paris out of a gorgeous silk/wool from @moodfabrics. I have some extra which I need to figure out what to do with! Happy sewing Sunday all! I wore this outfit to school this week and then again to a 70s themed birthday party last night. When I wore it the first time my husband said I looked very 70s so I figured it would suffice :) The pants are my tbt #v9282 that I have made countless times and am always tweaking for the perfect fit. I usually use fabric with a lot of drape for this pattern but decided to try this structured corduroy after @vanedugo in my sewing class making the same pair out of this fabric. I immediately went to @voguefabrics and got some for my own pair! We will need a twin pic when she finishes hers! I ended up needing to let out the rear crotch seam about 3/8 inch because it was giving me a serious wedgie! Now I like the more jeans-like fit. I need to scoop out the pattern at the rear a bit next time to create more of a longer crotch curve in the back. For fabric with more drape I will drop the crotch down 1/2 inch. I also added a waistband which I do to all my pairs but always forget to mention. I think they look much more polished with a waistband. The top is #s8982 view c with the crew neck from view b. It is made with a stripes French terry from @moodfabrics. Both pieces are in regular rotation in my wardrobe. Vogue V9282 high waisted trousers view C (without the buttons) I made these from some light denim from @murtonfabricsyorkltd as a wearable muslin. I made no adjustments to the pattern this time except for leaving off the buttons. I’m pretty pleased with the fit, I could take an inch in at the waist with no bother, but they fit beautifully on my bottom! They fit similarly to shop-bought trousers of the same style. I did have to hem them by around 4” (10cm) which would be better taken out at the cutting stage. The other change I will make when I make these again is to finish my seams - I’ve left these raw, except the waist facing, and they’ll fray when I wash them. #vogue #voguepatterns #v9282 #seamstressesofinstagram #sewyourownclothes #memademay2022 #memademay

Let’s talk about fit. Yesterday’s trousers basically fit. In the same way a similar pair from the shop might fit. But I wasn’t happy with them. I unpicked the front waist facing, added two 5/8” seams in line with where the front seams are, then added 5/8” to the seam allowance on the front waist tapering to 0 added at the hip. As you can see it hasn’t changed the fit across the bottom much, but the trousers now sit where they should and there is less excess fabric in the front crotch. I’m much happier with these now - next thing I need to do is amend my pattern pieces to reflect the changes I’ve made so that next time I can make them without having to adjust them afterwards! #seamstressesofinstagram #imadethis #homesewing #voguepatterns #v9282 #fitadjustment

Happy Monday summer sewing! I couldn’t get my act together for my usual Sunday post so here it is! With the Barbie movie all I see advertised and pink being one of my favorite colors, I felt I needed another pair of my favorite #v9282 pants. This version is made from a pink cotton poplin from @voguefabrics. These have been in regular rotation this summer, and I always get compliments when I wear them. The fabric is very structured and has little drape, but still somehow works with this versatile pants pattern! The only down side is they wrinkle very easily. Alas- my sewing instructor @veronicabrackett told me we sewers are overly critical of the slightest flaws and no one but we notice! The sweater is an old rtw cashmere one I bought years ago and still wear every spring. Can’t wait to see the movie! For those of you who have already seen it- was it worth the wait? I’m definitely more confident in making pattern alterations now—I used to think it was too much unnecessary fiddling when people would say they did XYZ to this or that pattern but to get an end result that’s exactly it what you envisioned is worth it. Pants—straighter waist/hips, took in the sides and center seams at least an inch over all from my appropriate hip size, added a waist band instead of facing. . Tank-SBA, high round back to stop the sliding up if the front, 1/2 from center front, graded teo sizes from side to strap/v-nevk, this version has a full front lining instead of just a facing. . #sewover50 #sewover50june24 #patternadjustments #linen

Happy Mother’s Day to you all! Hope the sewers out there are getting some time to create. Not sure that is in the cards for me today but alas… summer is coming! This is yet another version of #v9282, my all time favorite pants pattern. The highlight of this version is the fabric and color. I absolutely adore this green. When I traveled to Paris last summer this color was everywhere in fashion- but not at any of the fabric stores. I searched when I got home and @moodfabrics in New York had the perfect fabric! This gorgeous ponte was a dream to work with. It has plenty of stretch but is also super stable with some structure so these pants drape beautifully. I think I need to order some more I love this fabric so! I have already worn these pants many times and get compliments every time. They are so comfy yet glam. The perfect combo! Happy sewing Sunday! Hope you all had a relaxing and delicious Thanksgiving Holiday (if you are celebrating)!! I have been busy at work accumulating winter fabrics with no real chunks of time to sew. Blah. I am trying to steal moments here and there to get projects going, but it is slower than I would like for sure. I did find time to batch cut two pairs of my favorite #v9282. This version is made from a wide whale cream cotton corduroy from @joann_stores. The fabric is structured and somewhat bulky with a hint of stretch, so I had to take these in more than my other pairs at the hips to get a more flattering fit. Now that I have fixed the fit, I have them in regular rotation in my wardrobe. I wore them to school right before our fall break and one of my colleagues complimented me on them. She said that while she does not sew, seeing my pants made her want to learn because it is so hard to find cords with the right fit. I thought that was an awesome compliment!
