Going out/Church dress Pattern: Vogue Easy V9328 by @simplicitymccallsaustralia - $30.60 Buttons: @hemline_fashion 14mm - $7.00 Thread: gutterman (322 & 321)- $5.00 Zip: Birch invisible zip, 35cm - $5.50 Material: Rayon, ptd rayon cluster - $12.60p/m @spotlightstores = $50.40 Total material ~ $98.50 Total Labour* ~ $29.40 x 15 = $441.00 Total cost ~ $539.50 *minimum wage of a seamstress in Australia I originally bought this pattern as a backup dress for a party I had to attend and then found this lovely fabric (pictures do not do it justice) in spotlight and knew it would make a lovely going out/church dress. It was my first time working with Rayon and I have learnt a lot, the correct needle, shorter stitch length and stay stitching on a short stitch length are essential! I French seamed all seams except the arm holes and the centre back seam, it has created a much cleaner garment on the inside. I created my own bias tape on this project and it wasn’t too bad, I did have problems with warping in the neckline and I reached out to the @reddit sewing group and they came in with a few suggestions, ultimately I made a small cut in the should seams and Center front and slipped elastic into the casing and it worked wonderfully. Next time I will stay stitch straight away and also use interfacing in the necklines, I will need to sort out the gaping in the back as this didn’t happen on the mock up I made! I’m very excited to wear this dress 👗 #v9328

I couldn’t believe my luck when I had the Palm House to myself @botanicgardenssa I took the chance to take some photographs in the space. The Palm House is a restored Victorian Glasshouse and was imported from Germany in 1875. For a while it was closed to the public due to rusting and was unsafe to enter, but reopened in 2018. Most of the plants inside are at risk or endangered in their natural environment. Inside the glasshouse was so warm and tropical, after the winter in Melbourne it felt like I was being warmed through to my core.

I don’t have the mental capacity to sew at the minute, but I do want to share a #ThrowbackThursday of a dress I finished earlier in the summer 💛 I had Vogue 9328 in this primrose yellow viscose crêpe on my Make Nine plans for this year. The fabric has a pebbled texture, but it is incredibly soft and drapes beautifully. I thought that the flutter sleeves and gently a-line panelled skirt would really showcase this fabric! In hindsight, I should have stabilised the waistline and neckline better; I staystitched these areas, but there is some stretching and distortion that are causing draglines. Felt pretty great taking this dress out last night. Wearing it around was so much fun. There’s just so much dress! The dress is made from a gorgeous organza (sourced from @anitaphillipsstudio stash of fabric - thank you) The pattern is a combination of Vogue #V9311 and #V9328 I made a slight modification to the bodice, switching the darts to gathers. And made the skirt longer and wider to create a gathered skirt with so much volume. I paired the outfit with a pink satin slip (using the same patterns), my doc martens, and the most amazing green acrylic bag from @shagmelbourne

Obligatory shot of my me-made dresses in a hotel wardrobe. Makes me smile every time. We are in the most striking hotel in Monaco, it’s beautiful. I want to come back, and back……😉 Just one question to hotel room designers. Why oh why are wardrobes regularly too short to hang my dresses? I’m not very tall, and these dresses are not floor length, yet many are too long for the wardrobe. This is something that niggles me, and is far from unusual. I can only conclude that men design hotel wardrobes. 🤔🤭 PS. Can I just add that my greatest source of frustration in hotel rooms is when there’s a mirror 🪞 at one end of the room, and a plug 🔌 at the other, and your hairdryer just won’t reach. I sliced the skirt in two places adding ruffles with lovely beaded trims added to each layer. I also sliced and spread the sleeve to give it extra oomph and added a ruffle to the neckline. So it’s #topnine2023 time! 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣ This year I made ….. 22 dresses for me (same number as last year - weirdly) 2 dresses for 2 year old toddler twins 3 dresses for our baby granddaughter 2 large holdalls The first montage shows my Top Nine. The next three show everything that I made in 2023. I know that the norm is to choose the nine most liked items on Instagram, but this didn’t really sit well with me. At the beginning of the year about 600 people were following me, but there are nearer 1000 now 🙏. So obviously there will be more ‘likes’. Instead, I have chosen my personal Top Nine. Dresses which are my favourites for many reasons, including the memories held within every thread. It could be the memory of where I bought the fabric, who received the dress, where I wore the dress, or a connection to a special occasion. These are things that nobody else can see, but which mean a lot to me. Without even realising, 5 of these are @fabricgodmother #fgpeony dresses, although I don’t think this is obvious at first glance. Fabrics came from Canada, London, France, Italy and home - #aberystwyth ; all were bought in person apart from the starry fabric from @fabricgodmother and the zebra and rose print from @snapdragonfabrics . Most embellishments are from @aberdashery , but my feather boa trim (sooo much fun) was from @hobbycrafthq . Off on holibobs in a couple of days and this will be coming with me; I think it has posh hotel restaurant potential. 😀 I nearly missed out on this crepe from @snapdragonfabrics because I had a ludicrous idea that I should be ‘good’ and resist. Flippin stupid idea 😳. Anyway, having quickly sold out, several weeks later a few metres were advertised so I grabbed it straightaway. I got away with it this time, but I won’t be self-inflicting fabric deprivation on myself again in a hurry. So the Vogue 9328, described as Easy, wasn’t much fun to sew, and was almost chucked into the corner unfinished. However I’m now very glad that I kept going and have ended up with a dress that I like and fits🌷🌷🌷. It’s 6” longer than the midi and 6” shorter than the maxi. Having done some measuring I sewed the D cup version - I’m a bra size DD, however I really should have chosen the C cup, as I was left with unflattering bagginess that had to be rectified. Job done, but it was disappointing having carefully measured high bust, full bust and all that. Even though the cut-out in the back is a prime feature, I’m not sure if I’d bother with it if I made another one. It’s finished with bias tape and was slightly faffy, so I’m thinking it would be better lined. We’ll see…… It’s hanging in the spare room, with matching shoes and handbag, ready for the suitcase.
