I am so glad I found the #tshirt4summer2022 challenge by @sewjoei ! This has really given my creativity a boost. It turns out I am in want of tank tops, so here is another one. This tshirt pattern by #simplicitypatterns and it is #s8376. I modified the fit of the sides and length, and rotated the sleeve openings to give my shoulders a little more sun when I wear this outside. To show how to style this tank three ways (according to the challenge) I am showing how I will wear it with my workout shorts (modified version of New Look 6644), a maxi skirt from either #mccallspatterns or #simplicitypatterns but for which I cannot find the pattern to save my life, and finally a RTW pair of high-waisted jeans. I used a Ruffler/pleating attachment to create the pleated neckline trim in knit top. I hacked the pattern’s round neckline into a V-neck and used Simplicity’s “Simply the Best” sewing book for the sewing technique for a V-neck band. Super easy to follow. I bought the knit at the RIP Hancock Fabrics in Tacoma, WA. I miss that store. ✔️I always sew with All-Purpose sewing thread. This is the type and size of thread your sewing machines were set up to use at the factory. My favorite brands are #1 Mettler @mettler_thread and #2 Coats and Clark Dual Duty @coatsandclark #sewingthreadtips - Check out the thread brand your Sewing Machine Dealers use. They always use the best because that thread provides the best stitch for their sewing machines. #SewingMachineTip I never mess with the tension and leave it set on the red line (or middle number) that it was set at from the factory. It is set at that for all-purpose sewing thread. I used a straight 3.5 length stitch and a new Universal 80/12 @schmetzneedles needle. I change and put in a new needle every garment, if not twice during the construction of a garment if there is a lot to it. Folks, the cost of a sewing needle is so low compared to the cost of your fabric. Dull tipped needles snag fabrics. The sewing thread also sharpens the upper needle hole causing your thread to shred. This knit pressed well and I pressed my seams open. I finished the armhole seam with a second straight stitching 1/4” away from the original seam in the seam allowance. I trimmed close to this seam finish stitching. I wanted to showcase this cowl neck sweater. It is made from French Terry from fabric dot com when it was a company. The cool thing about this shirt is that it's made from a short sleeve pattern. I extended the arms and made a cowl neck. I use this pattern #s8376 as a sloper. I really like taking simple patterns and turning them into something else. Do you ever buy new patterns that stay in your stash untouched for months? You have the intention to sew them and are excited, but it’s forever until you actually get around to doing it. That how I felt about this skirt. I saw the pattern and bought it right away—super excited to make this skirt. I finally got around to sewing it months later! I let someone else choose the fabric in the store because I saw too many that could make a cute skirt. By 9pm last night I had finished designing and making my "perfect" tshirt... By lunchtime today I decided it still needed tweaking. I absolutely love tshirts. I want to get this right, and then I never have to buy tshirts again. I’m working on refining the the perfect t-shirt for my body. Pattern: started out with a #S8376 in a 14 Adjustments: I did a narrow shoulder adjustment of 3/4”. It sits at a really great spot now on my shoulders. I also graded the waist to a 12, but there is still quite a bit of ease and it’s baggy from the back. Fabric: from a local mom’n’pop fabric store. A cotton printed jersey. There’s still some tweaks to be made so that the neck doesn’t droop down like that. I think it happens because I go from narrow shoulders down to higher set breasts and the demand for volume increases dramatically, all within 5 inches of length on the torso. In RTW t-shirts, this happens unless it is oversized or it is super stretchy and skintight. Pants are RTW, lipstick is Lina Choo Matisse. Image Description: a closeup of a body, from lips to knee. #MeMadeMay2024 Day 1: 🎶It's the most wonderful time of the year🎶. I genuinely hope you sang that. My pledge for Me Made May is to wear a memade item everyday this month. @sozoblog tells us every year that this is not a photo challenge but I will try to post everyday because I find that it's a good opportunity to engage with people! Made a size small as her actual size would be a medium, so I went down a size for a closer fit. This will be one of many undershirts for my older sister. As a beginner, I will be working more on my neckbands with knit fabrics to get better at making them. Overall, it's definitely better than other neckbands that I have made in the past 😂. I came home from work this evening and sewed myself this tshirt from the same pattern I sewed up last weekend, but from nicer material, although also from the thrift store. Impossible to see in any light, but this is a dark blue sweater knit. I came up with the idea to make short-sleeve turtlenecks to keep warm but have my arms free. I literally measured the length of my neck with my index finger and thumb, marked it on the fabric, and doubled it, lol. The rest of the shirt is from a pattern by #simplicitypatterns. I had an extra metre of fabric leftover from my #colettewrendress and thought I’d have a play with a pattern I won last year on Instagram from @sewhq . I normally buy basics like tshirts and make dresses and other ‘more exciting’ outfits, but I’m thinking that might be about to change. This T-shirt came together super quickly and easily, and fits perfectly across my boobs (unusual for tshirts!) without needing to make any pattern alterations. In future I might try to make a slightly more fitted T-shirt by taking the side seams in at the waist and hip, but for now this is the perfect T-shirt for working from home and pairing with shorts or jeans. Classic blue striped shirt. I have to be honest this shirt is super simple but I love it so much. Initially I saw this shirt @talbotsofficial and have loved it since then. A yr later I made it right on time for the fall. The other cool part about this project is that i made it in my new ergonomic sewing room. Sweater knits are super easy to sew and I often find them on sale I am guessing because people are afraid to sew with them and slow to sell. Many of my sewing students and friends have asked if I knitted this. 😊😊😊 No, I sewed this in under 2 hours! I hacked a round neck pattern into a v-neck because that neckline is the most flattering on me. I used the neck band technique in Simplicity’s Simply the Best Sewing book. The instructions and visual diagrams are easy to follow and I recommend this as the best Sewing book very sewer should own. I pre-tested my stitching and found the Universal 80/12 needle worked well. I always start testing my pre-test stitch with this type and size of needle and if they don’t stitch well I change to a Stretch 75/11 needle. I start testing my stitching with a straight stitch. The thicker the fabric, the longer the stitch. The finer and thinner the fabric, the shorter the stitch length. After stitching, I pull on the fabric, stressing the seam like you do when you wear it. If the stitching pops and breaks, I try a slight zig zag stitch. I rarely need to use the stretch stitch. I love that straight stretch stitch in a 4 length for top stitching, but that is on other garments. In this sweater knit I used a 4 stitch length due to the thickness of the knit. If your sewing machine has difficulty feeding the fabric under the pressure foot, use a walking foot or even feed foot. That #sewingtip came from people in #sewapril2017 and #sewapril2018 posting their “Sewing Tips” and it really helps 👍👍👍👍👍. Simplicity #s8375 and #s8376 are current knit patterns that are “Hacking” patterns. There is a large 1” grid pattern tissue included for you to change up your designs. All sizes are included in the pattern 🤗. As a sewing instructor, I love that.
