So excited to start pattern hacking 2024… I missed that we start on June 30th 😂😂😂. I love a good hack. If I remake this, I will move the zipper to the back as this has a side zip which made me learn to do an inseam pocket with zip which was good because who doesn’t love a well placed pocket. It’s been well over a couple of months 😬 But….throwback to this day at the races, the annual pilgrimage to lose your money and get wasted on Pimms. Never not obsessed with @ascotracecourse. Dress was made using an incredible cotton from Sydenham’s dead stock fabric store. Jess modified the @simplicitymccallsuk #s9292 pattern cutting it into an empire waist, extending the sleeves and replacing the circle and straight skirt options of a more traditional #cheongsam dress with her favourite modification… a huge gathered skirt. She also made the hat, using a @petershams #sinamay hat base and a few meters or veiling. The Bratz shoes are from @asos. There have been a few dm’s asking. 😉

Sewing bucket list item ✔️ As a Chinese-American and an appreciator of vintage style, it was only natural for the qipao 旗袍/cheongsam 長衫 to be on my sewing bucket list. The only problem was when I would have the chance to wear it. The opportunity finally appeared at our dear friends' wedding 2 weeks ago. 🪡 Fabric: jungle green crepe elastane from many years ago, purchased from @fabricmart Everything to make this dress was from my stash. I bought the fabric intending to make some flowy pants or a work blouse for when I returned to the office (I never did). The piping was made using scraps from one of my first projects with cotton cording from some random craft project I don't even recall. The frog closures were also from the same scraps. I watched so many YouTube videos on how to make Chinese ball knots and decorative closures. Any plans I harbored of making casual 旗袍 from cotton were withdrawn after making these closures. It's no wonder they are their own craft! 🪡 Pattern: #B6483 or #S9292 view B. I graded from a size 12 bust to 14 waist. Sleeves were size 12 I bought this pattern in my early sewing days. I contemplated buying the pattern from Porcupine Patterns to support an indie Asian maker, but I didn't have the time to risk potential fitting and drafting issues. And with everything else coming from deep stash, I felt compelled to use what I already had. If I were to attempt a casual cotton version, I would definitely try Porcupine Patterns. This pattern has a lapped size zip (my first), that I ended up doing an invisible zip installation for. The collar was unnecessarily complicated for the clean finish, but the markings are off. I followed the markings and instructions exactly and it ended up being too short to enclose the raw edges. I also don't love the waist seam as it is not historically accurate, but I will admit that it looks really good for cocktail attire.
