Let me share a little secret… When I said that these were my first zip-fly pants because I usually favor elasticated waists for comfort, I wasn’t lying. But here’s the twist—they’re not entirely without elastic! Knowing my waist measurements fluctuate, I made these slightly roomy at the waist and added elastic only to the back. The result? A perfect balance between structure and comfort—no bulk, just the ease of an elasticated fit with the sleekness of a tailored waistband. Genius, right, lol? I designed this cropped top specifically to pair with these pants. It’s a departure from my usual length, but I love the final silhouette! The pattern is the #vikisews_gella by @vikisews —technically a knit pattern, but thanks to its oversized fit, it worked beautifully in a woven with a rib-knit neckline. I took inspiration from one of my favorite brands, Alpha60, which frequently plays with this combo. The fabric? A tiny #ladymcelroyfabrics remnant from a previous dress project— #chicagopolaroids from @maaidesign All jewelry is also handmade with my mum’s and grandmas beads! Now, I need your thoughts: should I hem the pants or leave them raw and wriggling? Pants pattern Vogue #v2051 Denim from @spotlightstores #spotlightstoresfabric #maaiadesign @ladymcelroyfabrics

When I saw @carlycloth ‘s brilliant version of these pants I knew I had to have them. Immediately, if not sooner. So I purchased the PDF pattern online and had it printed without delay (more on this below). Love ‘em or hate ‘em, these pants are a vibe. And I’m here for it! I made a straight size, although I think the bum area could use a little work next time. So many great details in this pattern. I really love it. I will probably give it another crack in denim. Pattern: @simplicitymccallsaustralia Vogue #v2051 Fabric: Cotton drill from @spotlightstores Mods: Sewed the side panels with exposed French seams. I didn’t properly think that through, and there’s a tiny raw seam exposed where the pocket meets the side panel. No big deal, but I will avoid that on my next version. This was the first time I’ve bought a downloadable pattern from Vogue. Unfortunately, I didn’t register that two sheets are simply pattern layout references first the different versions. So, with six A0 sheets in total, this ended up being a very expensive pattern. More expensive than if I’d just bought the hard copy at full price. Something to keep in mind.

The value of exceptional tools... Here, a pattern marked for a bias layout, from which I’ve changed to on-grain with this fabulous ruler from susankhalje.com. Vogue pattern 2051. #couture #sewing #voguepatterns #V2051 #rtwfast2018

Silk bias skirt study is complete! I never thought I’d ever venture into making a silk skirt for myself, but here you have it. I was inspired to explore working silk on true bias after seeing ready to wear versions on various media. Having acquired Bette Kirke’s book on Madeleine Vionnet & her technique/logic of working on the true bias, I worked my way through the process of this skirt. I had a gorgeous silk remnant that I ordered online from @mendelgoldbergfabricsnyc, but since I only had 1 and 1/4 yards to work with, this limited my range of patterns and lengths to work with. Fortunately, I had this #v2051 pattern (which I’ve had for ages!) and skirt version J required exactly 1 1/4 yards, and I went from there. In making this skirt, I was guided by the bias logic I acquired from my study of Vionnet’s work and by the pattern instructions. Lots and lots of basting went into this work, so I never felt like I was at sea! I also worked in a few couture details that I already have experience with. In the detail shots, you will see the petersham ribbon that I used as waistband/facing. There are two zippers in this skirt - one on each side measuring approximately 4” and these have been applied by hand. Tiny snap details are also incorporated. Finding that this fabulous silk did not ravel at its edges, I felt that I didn’t have to finish these raw edges, with the exception of the hem, where in a detail photo you will see the raw edge has been hand overcasted (with silk thread, single strand) and hemmed in place with a slipstitch (polyester thread, single strand). This silk is pretty amazing, it’s weight and texture are perfect for working on the bias in such a skirt design. #sewingwithsilk #handsewn #vionnetinspired #sewingonbias #biassewing #couturesewingtechniques #couturesewing #sewover50 #remnantsewing #handmade #vogue2051 #V2051 #sewcialists #sewersofinstagram #biasskirt #slowsewing #slowsewingmovement #madeleinevionnet #madeleinevionnetinspired #smallyardagesewing #stashsewing #stitchdivastudios #rebellacecardi #crochet #broomstickcrochet #mendelgoldbergfabrics #skirtwednesday #sewingskirts

Day 7 of #memademay2025 in my barrel jeans designed for @simplicity_creative_group (#v2051). They read more “balloon” to me, but that’s cool. They truly have the most amazing darts in the rear (a nod to Alaïa, I think…). So here’s the thing about these. The shape is completely outside of my comfort zone, but I had the denim and bought the pattern at Joann’s (RIP) for super cheap, so it was a low stakes way of experimenting. I chopped some length off and ignored the as drafted waistband situation. No I will not gather denim into a smaller waistband thank you very much. I cut it to match the un-eased waist measurement. Also made the back pockets larger because they were comically small. What I love? The details. What I hate?? That I forgot to cut the pockets with stays (no jeans should be without pocket stays…) and that the side pockets are so scooped that they kinda cut into my, ahem, softer tissue. I know how to fix both these things yet somehow ignored the issues during construction. Take your time, folks. Don’t skip the details that you know will make your garments perfect. I also deeply struggle with pairing these crazy bottom shapes with the upper silhouettes in my closet. I have a very high waist so don’t love to tuck things in, but I also want the details to shine. Also deeply struggle with poor light in our vault, but that is out of my control. One day I’ll have CLEAR images. But for this month, I shan’t overthink and just share it all. Oh yeah, @iwantmyglasses, here’s yet another #ootdinthestacks!

I just posted a very detailed review of this new Vogue pattern #V2051 to my story highlights. After some roadblocks I finally got to try them on and was immediately obsessed. They’re giving all the ease and comfort of a horseshoe or barrel shaped jean but the tapered leg shape means they’re not dragging on the ground. Best of both worlds! This is my normal size 16 with some mods to the waistband which I explain in the story highlight. The twill is a brushed cotton from @affordabletextiles in Toronto. Worn with another #vikisews_gella tee, this time in a cotton loop terry from @fabricwarehouse_rahway. #voguepatterns #v1958 #vogue1958 #affordabletextilestoronto #sewing #memade #isewmyownclothes #sewistsofinstagram #fashionsewing #imakemyownclothes #sewista #handmadecloset #sewingdiary #thanksimadeit #creativepragmatist

Working in the tiny details... And so nearing the end of this silk work!! But really, the tiny details can sometimes take as long to figure out and balance as it takes to build the main body of the work! All good though. Here a hand picked zipper application, the petersham ribbon waistband application, and the positioning & hand sewing of a tiny snap detail. 🤓🖤🙃 #sewingwithsilk #handsewn #vionnetinspired #sewingonbias #biassewing #couturesewingtechniques #couturesewing #sewover50 #remnantsewing #handmade #vogue2051 #V2051 #sewcialists #sewersofinstagram #biasskirt #slowsewing #slowsewingmovement #madeleinevionnet #madeleinevionnetinspired #smallyardagesewing #stashsewing

I’ve been completely obsessed with barrel-leg pants lately—saving endless inspiration photos and hunting for the perfect pattern. Along the way, I realized that not all barrel-leg pants are the same! The shape I love most is fitted through the waist and hips, then flaring out lower, at the thighs. When I came across this pattern (Vogue #v2051 ), it felt just right—and those pocket style lines? Instant love! I bought it immediately… but it sat on my wish list for far too long. Sewing pants always seemed intimidating, especially the fly front (until now, I’ve stuck to elasticated waistbands for both comfort and ease). But you know what? These were surprisingly quick to sew and not as tricky to fit as I expected! And I love how they turned out. I did make one tweak to the style —I skipped the gathered sections at the sides of the waist to allow for a bit more room, since my waist isn’t as defined as I’d like. Now, the next challenge—styling them! So far, they seem to work best with slightly cropped tops, which my wardrobe is seriously lacking. I’m imagining loose cropped tees, sleeveless button-ups, and tucked-in tanks. What would you style these with? Would love to hear your ideas! testing testing... Alright! Having finished with the jersey knit pants from the DKNY pattern (photos yet to follow), I am back to concentrating on my silk bias skirt. In these photos, a practice of the couture method of applying a hand picked zipper to this work. The first photo has the sample piece hanging from my dress form. I am very pleased with the result: the stitch beads are level, uniform, and evenly balanced; there will be some adjustment needed at the zipper’s “handle”, but all in all, I’m satisfied with this test/practice session! 🧡🤓 #sewingwithsilk #handsewn #vionnetinspired #sewingonbias #biassewing #couturesewingtechniques #couturesewing #sewover50 #remnantsewing #handmade #vogue2051 #V2051 #sewcialists #sewersofinstagram #biasskirt #slowsewing #slowsewingmovement #madeleinevionnet #madeleinevionnetinspired #smallyardagesewing #stashsewing #handsewing
