Last post about my con trip: costume details, mostly for sewing people. I really did go to AnimeNYC for the Creepy Nuts concert, but since I was there anyway and love dressing up for any reason at all, I obviously had to cosplay. I dressed as Captain Mithrun from Delicious in Dungeon, which normies can watch because it's on Netflix, though he's hardly in season 1 (he'll be important in season 2!). . Anyway, the costume. The cape is the capelet from #m8335, heavily modified to change the shape and closure and how the hood attaches. I made the lining first as a muslin, which worked well. I had to add some length to my first attempt, but the seam from that is hidden on the inside. The tunic is based on my already adjusted #ddbelladone pattern just because I know that fits me, but I changed the bodice to have princess seams (that sounds like it should have been complicated, but I just went for it and it was fine?) and modified the armholes and neckline and lengthened and gathered the whole thing. The skirt, neck thing, and arm things were self-drafted, made out of felt that I spray painted and reinforced with scraps from the cape. (I also spray painted an old shirt to cover the rest of my arms.) I made janky pleather boot extensions because the boots I bought weren't tall enough. The extensions are just pinned on, but they worked alright. And I styled the wig to hide my right eye (using Elmer's glue, bless the deranged punks at high school art camp for teaching me that you can glue hair) and chopped the ends off some elf ears and painted the cut edges because the captain has Been Through Some Stuff. . The costume was not even a tiny bit weather appropriate or sensory-friendly, but that's par for the course for me. I'm happy with how it looked and how it held up. Notably, this was my first time cutting and styling a wig. #memademayday13 There is a massive goth festival every year in Leipzig (the wave-gotik-treffen), which my husband and I stumbled upon a few years ago by accident. Our weekend trip there happened to align with the major clothing and costuming spectacle, and it was actually really fun. While I’ve never been super into goth style and culture, we’re thinking of going back this year. I’ve attempted a few goth-inspired makes and collected a few things to get ready. Here are some looks in progress. (1) experiments in plisse—its a weird fabric. I might add a drawstring to the upper bust line on this one. I’ve sıfat just made a simple sheath dress and added a belt and shoulder clips. (2) I clipped the shoulders with vintage collar clips passed down from my grandma. (3) #m8335 cape for my husband (4) #asakadress by named clothing in black lace (with a narrower neck band) (5) a beautiful vintage dress I found on Vinted that reminded me of the Addams family style (6) I turned a dress I made (with plisse again) for Halloween into a skirt and paired it with this shoulder cover my mother in law gifted me from Turkey. All of these are worn over a very simple self-drafted linen dress I made. Items I’m still considering adding to this assortment: (1) something corset-like (2) maybe a wig, and (3) possibly a top with more straps/ties or one that’s peasant-ish/folkloric. These experiments made me realize I gravitate towards the vintage b-movie goth aesthetic, as opposed to punk influences. After this bit of exploration, I’m very excited to return to colorful summer makes: but maybe with a wider range of ideas thanks to this. Have you ever made things outside of your typical aesthetic?
