Recently @deathstar_beckstar sent me a screenshot of @britasews ME2016 dress saying “Ooh, I LOVE this”! I thought I’d give it a go, and this is how mine turned out. This is the longer version of the dress, which would be very demure…if it weren’t in this wild #muppet fabric (this fabric is currently available in Spotlight). Appropriate label from @kylieandthemachine , because yes, this did seem to take a while to sew! Shout out to @juliahincks for her blog reviewing this dress - I was mildly confused by the lower skirt gathers and felt very reassured that I was not alone in this, and to have some advice on a solution - thanks Julia! The bodice is supposed to be lined, but this fabric was sturdy enough to warrant no lining so I just did a bias finish instead. The pattern recommends an invisible zip…but this regular dress zip was the perfect colour - who could resist a bit of matchy-matchy! Has anyone had difficulty with the pockets gaping? I found that if you sew the pockets as instructed, the curve of the bodice makes the pocket gape. I ended up unpicking the corner of the pockets and taking up the slack before resewing them. I was much happier with them after doing this! Overall, I think it’s 5m of fabric well used! This dress is Vogue 9197 @voguepatterns the sleeves are once again one of my favourites McCalls ME2016 @simplicitymccallsaustralia . The fabric is the most beautiful linen & tencel blend from Tessuti fabrics @tessutifabrics purchased 3 or 4 years ago . The dress part has been cut out for that long ( without sleeves ) & has been in the naughty pile because I cut the bodice out with the stripes going down instead of across & the fabric had sold out & I only had enough left for sleeves . I was just so angry with myself & when I found it in naughty pile & thought a bit more I realised at least I could get a nice sleeve & the stripes going crossways. The fabric has a beautiful feel & drape which really suits the skirt in this pattern. Finally jumped on the #me2016 bandwagon and I love it! I picked up 3.5m of this lovely viscose from @roysmaterialworld at the #stitchfestival last month and knew I wanted to make this with it. I made a 14 and having worn it, would size down next time but perhaps keep the elastic the same size, I don’t like it being too tight on my arms. I’m thinking of taking this in a couple of inches around my waist. I also didn’t line it, I used the interfacing pieces to make facings as I much prefer that on dresses but would make them bigger in future. Biggest mod was probably squeezing the dress out of 3.5m! Me Made May today is my #me2016 by @knowmepatterns. I made this last year for a wedding and have been waiting for another ‘occasion’ to wear it. But really, it’s better to wear it now than leave it in the wardrobe because when that next occasion comes along I will definitely want to wear something new again! I spent a bit of time on pattern placement when I was making it and used 4 metres of fabric as a result. It was a bargain deadstock from Rainbow Fabrics.

My very green and very orange and very bright @knowmepatterns #me2016 dress worn at @frocktails.to 2025. Fabric from the fabulous @ceektex.fabrics. This dress uses a LOT of fabric and lots of thread with one million gathers. There’s some funky directions for the skirt panels which led me to reading a few blogs and reviews from other sewists who had trouble understanding the instructions. That said, it was a fun sew. Putting in sleeve heads was a new skill for me. With the stiff fabric and the sleeve heads, I don’t have to worry about any saggy sleeves! Will I make this dress again? Yes. I think I’d like to also try the @silversagapatterns #elsadresspattern since it’s similar, but a little different. Frocktails was a super fun event and the group chat behind-the-scenes was an entertaining lead-up to the night. It’s been so nice connecting with and meeting so many new friends. I’ve decided that this can be my very first entry to #magamsewalong . It fits with #magamaroundapril because it’s a pattern hack of @knowmepatterns #me2016 . This wasn’t the pattern I had in mind when I decided to use this #broderieanglaise which I bought last October from @classic.textiles on #goldhawkroad . I was thinking of doing some sort of marriage between #m7948 and #s9454 but I couldn’t seem to get it off the ground. A repeat visit to my pattern stash made me consider the ME2016. So, the bodice and sleeves are pretty much unadulterated (apart from being unlined), but the skirt is my own creation. I was restricted by the border design, therefore unable to cut curved hems or to connect tiers of ruffles. I wanted to retain the raised waistline at the front and to ditch the pockets, this entailed a bit of head scratching, but I got there in the end. 💪 The bottom tier is attached to some lightweight plain cotton, this helped to reduce some of the bulk at the waistline, and meant that my ‘good’ fabric wasn’t wasted by being hidden under the top tier. Photos are brought to you through gritted teeth, and a cocktail of determination and co-codamol 😬. I have a trapped nerve in my neck that’s causing severe pain, numbness and pins and needles down my right arm and into my fingers. 😫 I can’t sew at the moment, can’t ride a horse, can’t drive, can’t have a gin (or 6)😏. Make 9 2024 My machines and sewing gear are all neatly packed away until we make the move from London to Glasgow at the start of Feb so in the meantime, I'm making plans! 2021 was the last time I created a make 9 and I ended up making four of them that year and another two since then. My me made dress and coat for the evening at Plymouth Frocktails. I made the ME2016 in Fabric Godmother Manon viscose lawn.I lined the bodice and sleeves with an old cotton sheet to give structure. The quilted coat is the Hovea by Megan Neilson using the Etched diamond expansion pattern by Shannon Fraser. The Fabric is Fableism Nocturn Chambray. It took a while to make but is so comfy and warm . Plymouth Frocktails was such fun. Lovely to see all the other sewists creations, very inspiring. Tops and pants. I tend to gravitate towards grabbing pants and a top rather than dresses although I tend to try on a million combos before settling in the morning. Anyone else? Fully embracing the big sleeve trend - quite '80s 😂 I originally wasn't tempted by this pattern (the curved front seam didn't really do it for me) but I've seen so many beautiful versions on here that I gave in when there was a sale! Swipe to see some photos out in the wild on holiday 😊 and to see the invisibleness of my bright red zip! Pattern: @knowmepatterns @beautejadore @simplicitymccallsuk ME2016 View A in a size 12. I chose the size based on the limited finished garment measurements and looking at others' makes on Instagram - I was a bit worried the bodice seemed quite fitted. However, I think next time I can get away with a size 10. The alterations I made were: (1) taking 4" off the length of the bottom skirt pieces to ensure it ended up a midi length (fairly standard for me as I'm just under 5' 3"), (2) omitted the additional sleeve heads as I think I have enough pouf, and (3) taking about 7" off the width of the lower skirt back piece. This was purely out of necessity as the piece wouldn't fit on my fabric otherwise, but the skirt is still plenty full enough, I think. As with other "big 5" patterns, the instructions are a little sparse in places (in particular, I couldn't see anywhere about finishing seams - some are encased due to the lining but not all, so I just overlocked where I thought sensible). There is a sewalong on YouTube which did help in places (albeit the fabric used on that was a little difficult to tell right sides from wrong sides and in some instances (zip!) the method used was different to the instructions). Would I make again? Probably, but maybe not for a little while. I need a break from gathering after this one! 😂 Fabric: a William Morris-style viscose crepe from @sewconfidentdundee I originally ordered 2.5m but it turned out there was a join in the fabric. The lovely Sandra messaged me to say she could send a 2.2m piece and a separate 1m piece (very kind, thank you!), so I had around 3.2m in total and used pretty much all of it.
