Love it when a quick and easy sew works - rebuilds that confidence... I made the back a bit longer and used the selvedges as the neck and sleeve frill edges - not very often you can get away with an unfinished selvedge, but lucked out with this fabric. Only adjustment I would make next time would be to deepen the back neckline. Back hangs straight if you wear it off the shoulder, but a bit of a cocoon back line otherwise (which I don’t mind) #b4685 #sewistsofinstagram #memade

Thanks to @sewagainstthegrain for introducing me to the #butterick4685, I now have a super peasant top to wear all summer. I think I may have been a little skimpy on the elastic in the neckline and I think I need to make the bodice half an inch longer, but it’s pretty nice for a 1st attempt. I think I might like to try this in something that has more drape than a broadcloth, but this was a dollar or two a yard from @joann_stores, so..... Weekend fix… As much as I have come to love slow sewing - sometimes after agonising over fitting issues and relearning skills like buttons and zips - I just crave a simple sew. So I still haven’t done the buttons on my last top - but inspired by the lovely sewing experience with that rayon fabric from @spotlightstores - and by the magnificent vibrant blue and pink colour-way (not anywhere near what I would usually be attracted to) in a top I bought from @max_stylelived when last in NZ - I got this glowing ‘dogwood flower’ from the same #spotlightstores fujiette rayon range which screamed ‘gathers and big sleeves’. Pattern is a #sewingpatternhack mash-up of patterns in the stash and previous makes - there are so many #peasantblouse / gathered neck raglan variations out there from the Big 4 such as #b4685 #newlook6471 #simplicity8600 which I’ve made already and various others popular on my feed for inspiration such as #wildergown and #herontop and it’s such an easy pattern to make variations to. What is your favourite go to for a quick sewing fix ?? I usually make this style with a front facing / slit and put elastic in the neck channel but self-fabric ties attached to the ends of the elastic and secured in place near the opening (see last photo) for a comfortable fit that stays in place…. I feel like a princess in this dress. . A princess with a skirt full of ivy, which has grown from the walls of my castle, across the flagstone floor, and climbed up my skirt. . Or not. Because I can imagine that trying to walk with a train full of ivy vines might be a hazard. . This dress is a combination upcycle and new construction. The bodice is actually an upcycled peasant top that I made three years ago. Notice that the sleeves don’t match - it was (is?) a trademark touch, mostly because it uses up smaller pieces of fabric from my stash. What else are you going to do with those little pieces? I hate to see them go to waste. . The skirt is a thrifted sheet, dyed a seafoam blue. The flowers were originally green, so they still come through even with the blue dye. I’m fascinated by the colours I can get over-dyeing existing prints or patterns. All in all, this is one of my favourite makes. Blue shift dress . This dress was part of a “historical shift” project that I did in the spring last year (2019). I was trying to recreate historical shifts in different styles, but in contemporary colours, so that I could wear them to work and (hopefully) not look like I was wearing a nightgown. (This particular shift was made from an old sheet, and dyed blue.) . I love wearing this top! In a previous post before I actually wore it I was doubting this style for me! Thanks to your encouraging words especially to @am_sewist for pointing out the eyelet lace would soften, you were right! Plus I haven’t wore this jean skirt in quite some time (I don’t have a lot of separates) and it does have stretch in the fabric so this outfit will get some wear this summer. As I do for all my trips, I plan a mini wardrobe & color scheme of the outfits that I pack. For this trip it was yellow Gingham and mint green, which coincidentally went with the house we stayed in. The yellow Gingham print even went with a cup that was in the house! Here are some of the oufits: The dress is #M7946 view D - it took a lot of patience b/c there are 3 rows of Elastic and binding to do on this dress. Top is #B4685 view D- I omitted adding the trim and elastic waist to make a simple top. Jeans were a DIY . I got a plain pair of jeans from the #goodwill and added flowers, pearls and lace. All embellishments from #hobbylobby Jumpsuit is a combo using #S8635 view A for the top and #M8218 view B for the bottom. The fabric I used was a knit so I didn't need to add a zipper. I also wanted it to tie in back so that's why I chose s8635.
