If it doesn't twirl, I don't want it -- my only requirement for skirts and dresses since 1995. And it's one of the few pieces I've made that is 100% complete, including hem and closures. There's no breathing room whatsoever, but I think the fit is pretty spot on. . The square neckline was modified to be a sweetheart and the bodice includes a 1" FBA. The front and back panels of the skirt are two different sizes to match the side seams of the bodice. Skirt length shortened to about 25". .. One of the things that is definitely going to help succeed with this challenge is not rushing things… which I definitely often do. To help me with this, I have given myself a schedule… yesterday was washing and ironing the fabric, and today was cutting out the pattern and then cutting the main fabric, the lining and the interfacing. That’s all done now, so I’m going to force myself to stop, and go and do something else. Long (and probably boring) post alert, but today I am gearing up for quite possibly my biggest (personal) challenge to date. When I set myself the new year’s resolution of learning to sew from patterns, back in January 2023, it was primarily for two reasons: Firstly, because I want to get to a point where I feel confident to start creating clothes for myself that pay homage to some of my menswear fashion idols (Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Vivienne Westwood and suchlike)… obviously this is still a work-in-progress, but bear with! The other reason is because I want to be able to create the sort of womenswear that has long inspired all of the other dalliances with sewing throughout my life… specifically Christian Dior’s iconic ‘New Look’. There is a timeless elegance about his initial 1947 collection that has always entranced me (and many like me) and I have lost count of the number of times I have tried to just drape a dress that would indulge my fit-and-flare-loving sensitivities. Since setting myself that goal thirteen months ago, I have been buying up pretty much every pattern I have stumbled across and, as a result, I have a fair few to choose from on this ‘next step of my sewing journey’. However, I ultimately decided to go with this one as I am somewhat reassured that it declares itself as ‘easy-to-sew’ – it’s literally written on the sleeve! Rather than just share the results in a few days’ time, I thought I would bring you along with me for this one… and if anyone has already tackled this pattern and has some tips, please feel free to get in touch! Planning my #makenine2022 around patterns I already own and fabrics already in my stash! I had a little project planning paralysis so this was a good exercise and I'm really excited now. 1. Dress with sleeves based on #s8292 with basic bodice and #charmcircleskirt made out of @ikea duvet cover I got in the as is section. 2. Jeans from some @joann_stores denim, thinking about using #s8516 but may hold out until @helens__closet releases their new jeans pattern. 👀 3. Dress that is a hacked version of #m7920 with set in sleeves using @dearstellafab leaf print cotton. 4. Black shorts hacked from #m7626 and made with a cotton twill from @fabricdotcom 5. A cotton petticoat with #s8456 to wear with all my dresses and skirts! 6. @joann_stores Rainbow cotton gauze #winslowculottes inspired by the pair @ayellowkitchen made. 7. #m7952 but with a zipper in the back instead of buttons to make it more comfortable. Gonna use this adorable tablecloth I got on eBay because I was inspired by the Luana apron dress @less.thansimple made with it and tracked it down immediately. 8. #b6390 in the same denim as the jeans. Will be perfect for layering with dresses as it is a cropped style jacket. 9. A dress based on #s9294 / #b6556 but with a different neckline for my incredible @dearstellafab Sew Mischievous fabric. Created this dress using Simplicity 9294. I made View B before with great success, perfect fit! Love the neckline and the massive front skirt pleats. It's such a simple dress but it looks much more than that. A great beginner pattern that I plan to repeat over and over. I was finally inspired to use this fabric I had in my stash for years in the little red dress challenge, a challenge where you creat a garment with red as the primary color. A skirt made from the bottom half of #simplicity9294, also known as #butterick6556. The pleats were shockingly easy both times I’ve made this skirt, and I looooove how the pockets disappear into the folds! I don’t think I’ll make the dress version again, but the skirt destined to become a #TNT for me - classic and flattering, and I can always take or add material to the pleats to make different versions as my size changes. Pulled another dress out of the vault now that spring has sprung. In 2018 while editing Love Sewing magazine, I wanted to run a multi page feature on the new sewing community @sewover50 - so I invited a dozen of the early uk based members to come to our studio in their favourite handmade clothes and turned them into models while I jotted down their thoughts on sewing and hopes for the new account. I also sent out a questionnaire to other members, receiving back inspiring and heartwarming quotes about how much #sewover50 meant to them. A wonderful spread, for a wonderful group of women ❤️ Little did I know, that day would bond them for life - with fast friendships that have helped them through the pandemic, illness, bereavement but also celebrated every win with them (both creative and real life). This year, they kindly let me drop in to their annual reunion holiday trip to @thirkelow a creative retreat space with stunning views out of every window. I was allowed to add a dress on the finished make chart and honk the horn of success!! 📯 I brought my camera and tripod along and we managed to recreate the group photo from the magazine shoot all these years later. It was as chaotic as the first time they met on set 🤭 But the highlight was just seeing them all together. I watched them talk like friends of decades, and look after each other in the most uplifting way, whether making sure everyone has a drink or snack, to cheering on each person's handmade project with pure enthusiasm. And lots of laughter... What a treat to be around even for one day.
