The zip arrived and is in! I deviated slightly from the instructions. The zipper tape colour isn’t a great match for my fabric so I wanted to minimise how much it would show. I toyed with the idea of just covering it completely by sewing it centred rather than exposed but I decided in the end that I’d stick with the design (Rachel Comey probably knows what she’s doing 😂). I have reduced the width of tape exposed which took a lot of head scratching - I’ve basically sewn closer to the teeth I think. The bottom of the zip isn’t finished as nicely as I hoped and I might remove the whipstitching (done to shorten the zip) as it doesn’t look great, once all the topstitching is done I don’t think it will be necessary to leave it there. #memademay2024 day 31! Finished this modified version of the Vogue #v1994 very late yesterday night. Changes: - took out 5 cm each of the front and back crotch curve and graded in the inseam accordingly. The crotch is still very low, so I might shorten the rise as well -changed the exposed zip to an invisible one by removing the small 0.5 cm SA extension at the front crotch. Then instead of the zipper shield I added a facing all around the neckline and zipper front that I topstitched (inspired by the @fridaypatterncompany #donnyshirt ) - removed the front pocket/midriff and replaced it with a slant pocket to avoid the horizontal line across my hips - sewed the front bodice/waist pleats as darts. Also increased the waist dart intake by 1 cm that I consequently added to the side seam for more shaping - added back patch pockets and 5 belt loops instead of just one Materials: - fabric: @der.buntspecht.shop linen/viscose blend - zipper, belt buckle: @oudshoornshop - label: @kattun_stoffe Made in may 2024. As I was ironing the fabric, I thought it seemed very long and when I came to measure it, I had exactly a metre more than I had ordered! There was a mark on the fabric so I don’t know whether this was done on purpose or not. Most of my fabric ‘stash’ is made up of leftover fabrics that I don’t know what to do with, so I was determined to get rid of this extra metre straight away! With a bit of pattern-tetris I managed to cut out a pair of trousers, as well as the jumpsuit! There is basically nothing left which is very pleasing. I’ve started sewing and have one front done. The pocket construction is a little tricky (and the lining fabric is likely to show a little FYI) but it’s gone smoothly so far. #memademay2024 day 12! Today I finished the Vogue #v1994 jumpsuit. I started with a size XS top/size M bottom and made a few changes: - Shortened the front and back crotch seam by 5 cm each, tapering down the inseam which resulted in a slightly slimmed leg - added 2 more belt loops at the side seams - added back patch pockets The leg length was perfect with no changes, which is rare. For a next version I would remove the front pockets to eliminate the horizontal seam at the hips and place the waist seam slightly higher to match my waistline. But the general fit is the best I've had so far in a jumpsuit, and the fabric makes it extremely comfortable. I’ve put my toile of #v1994 together and it’s actually fine. I cut a straight size S which is right for my bust measurement (but I should be an M at the hips). It looks less than attractive from the back but my toile fabric is a lot light and crisper than my actual fabric (which also has a little stretch) so I’m hoping it will drape better. I also only had enough fabric for a knee length toile so I think the weight of the full leg will help. I can sit down with no issues which was the main thing I wanted to check. I’m tempted to narrow the shoulders a little (which is normal for me) but they don’t look too bad either - I didn’t toile the sleeves due to fabric constraints. Oh #memademay! The benefit of having made the majority of my own clothes for over a decade means that, even though I haven’t really sewn in earnest in a year, my wardrobe is still largely comprised of me-mades. The flip side to that is I’m thoroughly bored with everything and definitely feeling as I’ve reached some kind of crossroads style wise. Turning 50 and being sedentary all day doing long hours at work means my body has also changed and not in ways I’m happy about. I need a style injection and a weekend or two of doing nothing but sewing. I’ve seen @sewdiypatterns mention that her goal for #memademay2025 was to sew for 25 minutes each day. I think I might belatedly try and do something similar. Albeit less ambitious! I miss the days of carefully taking photos and posting each day in May. And the mad sewing in April to have new things to wear - which is clearly not what #mmmay is about but I know I’m not the only one! But I am where I am. So, hastily taken photos where I look awful as I grab anything to wear for work as I’m late again will have to do. I'm thrilled with the Rachel Comey #voguepatterns #V1994 jumpsuit. The soft, not stiff, medium weight Italian denim from @formerlatterfabrics is perfect for it. I shortened the body between waist and crotch by 1/2", leg length by almost 2", sleeves 3/8" - the life of the short limbed. First sewing project of 2024 underway! I’m really excited to get started on #v1994 a new Rachel Comey for Vogue pattern. I always look out for this designer and I have made a number of the patterns (and have several more in my collection 😂). I have chosen a wonderfully soft jacquard fabric from Meet MILK. I found it really hard to choose a colour but decided (boringly?) that the blueberry colour would get most wear🫐. It should be easier to find a matching zip too. I was hoping to get away without a toile but having read the instructions you construct the front and back completely then put them together. I can see why you would want to do this but it does mean that you can’t alter the body length as you go and that’s the thing I’m least confident about. Because I never learn, I cut this blue checker denim fabric before realising I had left the sleeve pattern piece (ironically) in the sleeve. Surprise surprise, I didn’t have enough fabric and @rainbowfabrickilburn had sold out. After trying to find a match for a deadstock fabric, which is obviously lunacy, I decided to just to contrast instead. Thank goodness for @littlestitchersews and their next day delivery for the clearly impatient. It’s giving 50s diner employee and I don’t think I’m mad at that. It’s finished! I’m pretty happy with how this has turned out. I made a size small (it’s pretty roomy, I’m usually at least a 14 at my hips) and the only modification I made was to fold a wedge out of the shoulder (about 1/2”). I only realised towards the end that the legs are much longer than I expected, I’ve turned them up about 2” in the first photos. I’m debating whether to cut them and re-hem or to tack the turn-ups in place. I’m 5’6” for reference and usually find vogue patterns a tiny bit short. The Meet Milk fabric is lovely and soft but creases easily (and has coated my sewing room in a fine fluffy powder). This was murder to make 😂. 8. Simplicity #s9327 dress. Fabric is thrifted white cotton bedsheet. LOVED this pattern. Had to do an #fba to accommodate my tiddies. Belt is thrifted. 9. McCalls #m7950 dress. Fabric is thrifted Waverley cotton curtains. I’m obsessed with this dress and wear it all the time in summer. Cowboy boots are thrifted. 10. Vogue #v1994 jumpsuit. Fabric is thrifted cotton canvas. I use this mainly for gardening. Or if I need to be a Ghostbuster. 11. McCalls #m7937 top. Fabric is thrifted Cotton pillowcase. There’s an udders joke here somewhere! Jeans are also new River Island (I bought 4 pairs in different colours because they fit amazing and I will wear them forever) 12. McCalls #m8343 coat. Fabric is a 100% wool thrifted vintage Hudson’s Bay blanket. It is also lined and SO warm. 13. Simplicity S9692 coat. Made from a thrifted wool blanket and leftover sherpa fabric. Quilted lining with vintage cotton fabric. This is probably the best thing i’ve ever made. I wear it all the time.

Do you muslin? I’ve been working on the muslin for Vogue 1994 today and I’m so glad I did because the crotch was super long and needed adjustment. I went down a whole size after reading some reviews. Definitely the right choice for the top. I think I’ll add some width back in at the hips though. ⁠ Gonna sew up the final in a teal cotton twill from @blackbirdfabrics.
