Super-cosy Teddy bear jacket 🧥🐻 You know when you have a fabric in your stash for years and it starts bothering you? This teddy fleece was bought for a vest project but never materialised in that form. This vogue pattern was also bought years ago so a match was made in my sewing HQ but with only 2m of Teddy available there was some mixing to do. As it happens, the brown baby corduroy was lying around left from my previous project and totally ignoring the fact that one is woven and the other has some stretch, they work really well together I think. Apparently it’s Saturday. Apparently we’re approaching November. Fireplace is dusted and roaring. Coffee is dark and aggressively strong. Grandpa-inspired outfit is fresh off the machine and photographed. 

I bought this subtly-striped poly suiting fabric from @fabcyclevan aspiring to make this sleek coordinated blazer and trousers set, but came across the #v9334 pattern on @carlosvoguepatterns. It’s a loose wrap-style jacket with side ties and an interesting collar that kind of rolls into itself with the use of darts. And lastly, to finish off my Bob week, I substituted the trousers included in the pattern with my second pair of #BobPants. 
 My boyfriend provided honest feedback and said he thought it might be “too much.” But good thing I’ve never believed in “too much” of anything. So here I am: not too much, not too little, but just as I am — a happy little brown potato sack. I mean, honestly, is anyone even surprised at this point that I resorted to making yet another oversized thing and with some kind of elastic?

May 30 after an Instagram hiatus. I went to the coast and focused on some other activities. Packing for an upcoming trip to see a good friend and playing in my closet. Make Number 18 was a knit jacket from Vogue @mccallpatterncompany done in a quilted jersey I got at @joann_stores. It’s proven versatile and easy to wear and I reach for it constantly so I’m thinking of making another, possibly in navy Sherpa. A closer look at this easy wear robe style jacket. 🎀🌸💖 Sewing notes: I only had a small amount of this fabric so had to make a few changes from the original pattern. I cropped it quite a bit, which I wanted to do anyway and used some of the vintage pink cotton I had left over from my last project for the facings, finished with a cute gingham bias binding. I changed the patch pockets out for very basic hacky welt pockets but I’m happy with those. Look! I made a suit! After trying to find the perfect chunky lilac corduroy for months, I ended up buying beige and dyeing it. As you can see I fucked that up but luckily ended up with this beautiful mulberry shade. (I also made the bag a few years ago so felt v self sufficient in this outfit)

#v9334 detail: I love this collar. It rolls onto itself with the use of darts, which I found interesting in a most subtle way. It’s what led me to double-click on the pattern, but also what I struggled with the most while constructing it. I realise this pattern is labeled “Very Easy Vogue” but I didn’t find it so very easy. I had so much trouble understanding the instructions for the collar & attaching facings that if you asked me today how I stitched it up, I couldn’t tell you. I took a step back and left it for a few days before attempting it again. And something just clicked & I was almost immediately able to finish the garment. 

I have this all-or-nothing approach of always wanting to finish something in one sitting, whatever happens. I do it with TV shows, I do it with cooking. Which is why when I start shows, I disappear for days, and when I cook, I continue even when I know it’s not right, and it’s often inedible. I’m slowly learning to take some time apart from challenging projects (for me anyway), because it deserves that level of restraint and respect.

I finished my first proper sprint make yesterday and today it snowed! I tried to channel spring transitional style getting dressed this morning. These are the pants from #v9334 , which I purchased for the jacket (which is part of my #makenine2022). I'm in need of some work appropriate yet comfy bottoms, so I used a black linen cotton blend for these simple elastic waist pants. These pants became a wearable toile - I made a large but took some width off from the hip to below the knee on the outseam. I think this thew the balance off somewhat? I'm not very experienced with pants but am hoping to improve over the next year so I can enter winter 2023 with a solid pants collection. I also adjusted the crotch curves slightly. I also used 1 inch elastic over 3/4 inch because it's what I had. They definitely meet the criteria of comfy pants and with a top that covers the waistband, like this #reynoldstop from last summer, it meets my needed level of formality for work.

Oh, the jumpsuit of sleep deprivation! I saw a Max Mara jumpsuit a couple of years ago, that I had to have, but the colour was not right for me…nor the price tag. I loved the pleats, the one shoulder and the exaggerated bow at the back. I’d intended to make it for my big birthday last year but as that fell in lockdown one, no outfit beyond pyjamas was required. Anyhow, into my diary came the wedding of the year and the jumpsuit was back on! I needed to draft it and used a vintage Butterick pattern (ugh, sucks that 80s counts as vintage) as the starting point. It took many toiles to get to the final pattern and I still didn’t get the fit quite right at the back, but I was running out of time and had no time for another mockup. I made a decision far too late in the day to switch out the original bottom half of the pattern for Vogue #V9334, but it did work better. I changed the original pattern to run a zip down the other side and into the trousers so I could get it on and off (the original pattern was elasticated at the waist), which made for fun times getting the pocket in as well. I sewed in the belt as I wanted to minimise faff for bathroom trips (got to think practically!). Wish I’d had time to do back pockets like on the original, but 🤷🏾‍♀️. No flat lay photos beyond a glimpse of the lining as I’ve already got it a bit filthy! The inspiration is on the last couple of slides. Gave my mom the adult equivalent of a macaroni necklace and made her this wrap jacket for Christmas. . . . #V9334 Project Notes: ✔️It is supposed to be oversized but I recommend to size down as there is A LOT of ease included. ✔️Need to be more exact/careful about ironing this type of fabric. Can you believe I have been wearing this jacket for a whole 9 months and never finished it? You see, back in March I needed a simple coat to wear for a trip so I made this at the last minute. I pulled this straight off the sewing machine with basted hems and hopped on a train. ⏩ to see a pic from that trip to Birmingham, UK! .. In the months since, I have fallen in love with just how warm good wool can be. The dense fiber breaks the strongest winds even without a lining. I've also discovered that this jacket desperately needs some belt loops. Now it's about time I finish it! .. I'll be sewing up a few wool fabrics from my stash this month to participate in the #madewithwoolcontest.
