The dress that stole over 200 hours of my life 🤍 My pride and joy... my handmade wedding dress! When I started this journey, I went in fully optimistic and completely underestimating how much of a challenge this would be. When we went and tried on dresses (which I totally recommend doing btw) I fell in love with the big dramatic ballgown silhouette. It's one day you get to be a princess and I wasn't missing that opportunity 😆 The dress my family tried to convince me to buy had a basque waist, off the shoulder detail and big train but it was fully satin which isn't my vibe. I tried on a French lace dress and couldn't get the fabric out of my head and so the hunt began! I'll go into that story another time... I already knew the bodice I wanted and funnily enough had made the Butterick #B5935 bodice for a party dress last year so the toile process was super simple. I did make a lot of changes down the line and had to do a full refit a couple of times though 😏 The skirt is completely self drafted and honestly, I have no idea how me and my Mum @sewingboxsomerset got it to this point because the whole process was a tonne of guessing and winging it 😂 The volume comes from the most amazing petticoat which is handmade but not by me! My Nan made it for my Mums wedding dress and it's a work of art but bloody difficult to fit into a suitcase haha The petticoat was a life saver with this dress because this incredible @newcrafthouse lace is SO heavy and didn't want to have any volume at all, but that 40 year old stiff net had no problems holding it up! @simplicitymccallsuk @simplicity_creative_group @janomeuk

While I am a bit more curvey than the model, I’m pretty pleased in how this top turned out. I dozed down from what the instructions called for after looking at the finished size and put in a stretchy panel in the back with a zipper instead of rows of grommets. The lining is quilting cotton and the fashion fabric is canvas. I opted to omit interlining all together. I was extra picky about the bias binding and half hand sewed the finishing side, which added a day of free time to what would otherwise have been a two day project. I will probably make another one with grommets before the summer is out. It was weird that I didn’t have to do a shoulder adjustment in the pattern. Belle’s day dress for #beautyandthebeastjunior 🧵 I used Butterick 5935 for the corset and Simplicity 9251 for the skirt. Belle wore her own blouse. Her mum made the apron from some thrifted fabric that we found which was just perfect! Last pic is before it was finished but I think it’s the only photo I have of the back! I finally made a corset! This is Butterick 5935 in view A - I made no alterations to the pattern. It seems to fit me nearly perfectly, which is unexpected for me from Butterick patterns. However, it's still a little too warm to wear this (weather in Portugal is in the high 30ºC's) so I'm waiting for cooler days to really put this to the test. I will then decide if I want to keep this pattern as is or make some changes. For fabric, I used @minervadotcom Core Range Cotton Velvet in Bottle Green. It's beautiful and really easy to work with. I was quite nervous going into this one because it was my first time working with velvet, and people tend to complain about it so much, but I thought it was super easy to work with. I used a regular 80 needle, my usual Gutermann polyester thread, and it was really easy to work with. I did take extra care when pressing it, to avoid crushing the velvet (I used a scarp piece of the same velvet, and placed it on top of my seams with right sides together when pressing). I honestly have nothing bad to say about this fabric, and would recommend you give it a go. Remember that velvet has a nap/pile when cutting though. I found the pattern easy to follow and the construction was fairly straightforward. Once you add the boning, the garment does become more unruly and difficult to put under the sewing machine, and generally harder to work with, but I feel like that's a normal thing for a fully boned corset. It was a bit more time consuming than some other things, but as I'd never made a corset before, I don't really have another experience to compare it to. I am looking forward to a future project where I'll be using this pattern though, so it was overall a pleasant experience and fun make. This was the costume I made for Black Fae Day. I really stash busted with this so that made me really happy. I think the only parts not from my stash was about 1/4 yard of crushed velvet, thrifted shoes, and paint & cording for the shoes. Oh! And my 👑 When I made this costume I wanted all the pieces to be separated so I could mix and match and even have a casual version of it. I made the wings the night before/day of so they aren't my best but definitely not my worst. Happy Thursday Folks!!! As we unwind from the birthday high, let's discuss these looks. I adore prints, and when I spotted this fabric, I knew it had to come home with me. Though it didn't happen initially, the birthday collection inspiration made it inevitable. The fabric, a light, opaque cotton with a slight stretch, exceeded my expectations. Starting with the skirt, I cut a size 26, requiring 5 5/8 yards from a 60” wide fabric. Working with a Vogue pattern is always a challenge and not for the faint of heart. I followed the instructions until I had to rely on my garment construction knowledge, because, the jargon in the instructions was driving me insane. Despite the complexities in the pattern, I appreciate the intricate details. I would love this skirt in a taffeta. The corset, a familiar project, was relatively easy. Trying to be efficient cutting the fabric led to a minor setback, I cut a couple pieces incorrectly, but after correcting it, the process flowed smoothly. I created casings to insert my boning, used a double-fold binding to finish it, and an exposed zipper which all resulted in a corset with an impeccable fit. I'm thrilled with the overall look and can't wait to style the pieces separately. 2 weeks later I was off to Christchurch for @southernpinupbellesnz ! I really loved this pageant but I really did struggle health wise 🙃 Southern Belle is a very different vintage pageant in that its Halloween theme, which made it incredibly fun to make things for. I decided to tell the story of Little Red Riding Hood (coz who says Halloween has to be scary? Other than @jadedsphnix ) First section was Daywear so obviously I needed to do Little Red with a cute dirndl inspired look. . Obviously, I needed the biggest, shiniest cape possible so I got sequin fabric from @spotlightstores & created basic oversized cape with a hood to wear. I lined it with chiffon from my stash which I instantly regretted coz sewing chiffon & sequins 🥴 . I got some vintage floral tapestry fabric from trademe & used Butterick 5935 to make a stylised corset top with gold embroidery thread for the front lacing & shoulder ties. I lined the corset with basic duck canvas instead of coutil as it didn't need strength but did need stability & added a small amount of boning for structure. I found some white stretchy fabric in my stash that I used to make a top for underneath - it's a copy of a collective Delores 😅 I used bright red polycotton to make a double circle skirt & added a gathered ruffle along the hem (that almost mentally broke me it was so long 😂). I made my apron which has cute squirrels/acorns on it & I made a matching bow for my hair. . My red berry necklace & red/white bangles were borrowed from @miss.sandydee as was my giant red petticoat. I wore my own white petticoat, red pettipants, red seamed @whatkatiediduk stockings with secondhand red sequin shoes. I borrowed a picnic basket from @miss_jazzylicious & added a sequin trim plus big bow. Inside I had a cupcake shaped like an apple which I bit into while "having a picnic" on an checkered wool blanket I brought from an opshop. . Finally finished this Black Parade corset for my sister to wear to the MCR concert! Lined with some heavy twill and cotton, I was able to turn a basic tshirt into a corset using the #b5935 Somewhere along the way, it ended up a few inches too big but I’m taking it back home with me to fix. Not bad for no fittings🫣 I’d like to apologize to my neighbors for sounding like a construction site while setting the grommets

Progress on my current sewing project, @simplicity_creative_group #b5935 corset. I’m sewing view A with some modifications: 1) button-up front, 2) no lace-up back closure, and 3) I haven’t 100% decided what I’m going to do with the straps, but I’m not going to do a bow closure. I’m attracted to the idea of some sort of hardware situation—TBD! Not a single filter on this photo; this tomato red fabric from @moodfabrics is that bright, and I love it.
