Just finished sewing this dress using original 50's/60's fabric and Simplicity S9296 (Gertie pattern). I must admit I did not enjoy this pattern, it was not designed to work for shorties and needed massive amounts of alterations. At one point I nearly threw the whole thing in the bin 😂 I think I'll stick with true vintage patterns from now on, they seem to work for me better. Anyway I persevered and finished it. The opshop gods must have known I needed a complimentary bangle as the wooden one magically appeared in my local the next day ✨️ Bag is probably 60's/70's and matches perfectly. Sewing curtains into dresses like in the Sound of Music, but make it 1950's. ✨💖 #memademay2025 I used S9296 by @gertie18 to whip up not one, but two dress! These florals curtains used to hang quietly in a grandma’s living room, now they’re twirling dramatically in mine, transformed into a 1950's style dress. This pattern is a dream for showcasing bold textiles. The fitted bodice, keyhole detail, and full 1950s skirt give structure and drama, especially with curtain-weight fabric that really makes the dress swish. Upcycling vintage textiles is one of my favorite parts of sewing. It feels like stitching a little history into something new. Vintage sewing is more than a hobby. For me, it is also a way to time travel. There’s something magical about zipping into a dress you made yourself, knowing it is unique made for yourself, by you. After finally taking the time to re-fit B6590 (currently available as S9296), I was eager to make a few tweaks to the pattern and make it up again. This time, I made a shorter sleeve to accommodate a Charm Patterns Dorothy Bolero, and made a coordinating belt. I’m happy with how this ensemble turned out and am so glad to have this pattern back in my repertoire, I can see myself turning to it often! I’ve already shared my Fantasyland B6590, but I got to flounce around in it at Disneyland and take some photos of it there! I had fun sharing some of my favorite vignettes on the fabric with folks who struck up conversations with me about the print! This is such a fun dress, it just makes me happy wearing it. I didn’t change up my accessories all that much from when I tried it on at home, although I did add a tiara this time around— if you can’t wear a tiara at Disneyland, then you can’t wear a tiara anywhere! I’ve altered the pattern a bit, making changes like adding a much fuller skirt (this one is 5.5x my waist measurement) and opening up the peekaboo at the neckline some. I’m pretty happy with this version, and likely won’t change the pattern more going forward. Have you guys ever heard the song “They Call the Wind Maria”? I first heard about it last year when I read that Mariah Carey’s mom loved the song and named her after it (it’s got the older English language pronunciation of Maria that sounds like Mariah— if you’ve read some Victorian/ Regency lit, you’ve probably encountered this!). I couldn’t help but think of that song when I was working on this dress. My favorite version is by The Kingston Trio; it’s moody and full of longing and has this great mid-century folk sound to it, and this homespun fabric in rich jewel tones paired with my tried-and-true Butterick B6590 make me think less of the glamorous or kitschy 1950’s aesthetic that usually dominates my headspace, and more of a homey, pared-down vibe. I’ve made this pattern up many times, but this time around decided to add cuffs. I drafted the simple pattern based on the shape of the sleeve. I also lengthened the sleeve a bit, as I thought that would work better with the design element of the cuff. I’ve also previously made changes to this pattern; for instance, I lowered the neckline a bit, and opened up the keyhole to make it larger.
