I’ve made more progress on my silk dupioni dress for my favorite son’s wedding in April. I had the final fitting with my sewing teacher and now the dress is sewn in its permanent stitching. It took a few tries but the invisible zip came together perfectly! I’m assembling the silk charmeuse lining today. Dress will be lined to the edge at the neckline and sleeve. Both our girls were bridesmaids at a family wedding held at the Tarueka Estate in the Wairarapa just before Easter. It was a joyous celebration and I loved every minute of it from the emotion of seeing the girls coming down the aisle followed by the gorgeous bride wearing a top made from her mother's wedding gown over her stunning dress, to catching up with family and friends and dancing the night away with genuine Southland cheese rolls for supper. Love was certainly in the air and it was such a delight to be there. And so to the bridesmaid dresses. The colour scheme for the bridal party was pink, orange and red. The first dress I made was the one on the right. The colours are over saturated in the first photo from my camera, so you can get a much better representation in the second photo. After a long hunt for a pink and red floral, Nerida Hansen had this Bounce cotton fabric in her clearance sale last year and it worked really well in this Vogue pattern 9292. The insert was a pink linen remnant from my ever so useful stash. It even has pockets! As soon as I received this pattern I knew I'd be making it at some point in time, although I did originally think I'd be going for the shorter version. Turns out it made the perfect dress for a wedding. The only alteration I made was to add pockets as I think all dresses should have them, they just come in so handy. However it did need quite a bit of fitting once I'd sewn it all together, I wish there'd have been finished garment sizing included as I'd have probably made a size down, that's how much I had to adjust it by. For my first attempt at princess seams I think this went pretty well, however I don't think I'll be making a 'dickie' again in a rush getting that to sit just right was a lot of effort! My boyfriend's cousin got married out of town this weekend, so I took the initiative to make both my dress and his bowtie! My dress is Vogue 9292, which is marked as a Very Easy pattern. I traced his bowtie off one that he owns. I used a beautiful cotton sateen from Minerva. The color is the most accurate in the second photo. It's so bright that it's hard to get! Swipe to see close-ups of the dress. I blended three sizes for my dress - 12 in the shoulders, 14 in the bust and 16 in the waist. It fits really well! I sewed the modesty panel in permanently because I won't wear it without. I used Vogue 9292 to make this dress. It's a very easy pattern. I added horsehair braid to the hem to get this shaped hem. I'll probably wear it under a jacket during this cold season. This fabric is special to me for two reasons - 1) I got it in Berlin during my first overseas trip with my now-husband as a souvenir, and 2) one of my favourite drag queens, Monet Xchange, has worn a dress and headpiece in this fabric - walking in the footsteps of a goddess. Christmas Dress! This is the Vogue 9292. It was a very easy sew, I used an invisible zip instead as I don't like visible ones. I did manage to burn a hole in it but I salvaged it and the folds of the dress hide the fix nicely! The dicky is supposed to be inserted with poppers but I decided to sew it in instead as I couldn't imagine changing it at any point. This dress ended up fitting perfectly, I didn't need to make any adjustments, just cut a straight 14!
