The trims on this dress will probably kill me. I'm using two black velvet trims on the gold facing. I'm hand sewing them to cover the machine stitches on the facing. I'm going to fastidiously document one of the most ambitious costumeing projects I've ever taken on. I'm working on completing an Italian Renaissance gown from a pattern by @angelacostumery through @mccallpatterncompany by (hopefully) October 31st. One month. I've ordered my (polyester, because 💸) burgundy shantung and golden tan taffeta online through @moodfabrics, so I likely won't get those until the end of next week. I picked up the materials for the lining, interfacing, and underskirt at @joann_stores to work on in the meantime. It's going to be my first boned bodice, and I'm attempting to make 1. A simple shift out of muslin, 2. An underskirt, 3. A (boned) bodice/overskirt to go on top, and 4. A hat/mask combo to add to the spookiness. Swipe to see the pattern! 😊 Wish me luck, I guess! It's finally done! There are a few things I wish were better in regards to fit, but I'm still very proud. Can't help but wish for perfection, though! Yes, some people have shown their whole asses in the past few months as greedy, selfish, racist, or just apathetic. But there are so many more others out there in the world putting beauty and kindness into the world and I choose to believe in those people 💛💛💛💛 . . As a sewing hobbyist I've been struggling with understanding where this hobby fits within the wider scheme of things and I still don't have the answers. Sorry dudes, I don't think I'll ever go back to sewing everyday clothes - costumes are too much fun!!! 🤸‍♀️🧜‍♀️😍😜💞 . . One thing I love about costuming is that you literally have no rules when you're making! You can just follow your heart, and ignore practicality almost entirely!!! It feels far more freeing than sewing something for real life when I had to think about where I would wear something (especially during the pandemic!) or what it would go with. In costuming you can just make it up as you go!!! . . For this dress, I used #mccalls7763 for the base dress, then gathered 40 yards of tulle which I layered on top. I repurposed that red ruffled skirt I made last Christmas (remember?!!) using red ruffled fabric from @joann_stores in #mccalls6953, cut it in half, and then hand tacked some drapes in it (which btw now have roses on top of them!) . For the bodice, I hand sewed beaded lace appliques on the front, and slip stitched some leftover ruffled fabric around the armholes. Underneath is an old bra that I actually bought in Shanghai that I ended up gluing small silk flowers to. . . I disassembled the sleeves from the old dress and used the black and white striped ribbon to make a cute choker 😊 . . Everything except the lace appliques were materials I already had on hand - its nice to feel like I'm actually using up resources I've already stockpiled rather than accumulating more (don't ask me about my Halloween project tho.....) . . (the mask was purchased at faire.) andré made my horns and of course all of his armor, over the past couple of years as he's been learning leather working. bonus points if you can guess the theme of his armor...

Honestly, it's looking way more complete than it actually is... I just finished cutting out the four inch wide "facing"/trim that goes along the entire edge of the garment, along with the twill interfacing used to stiffen it. I still have to make two sleeves (under and over) and add all the beautiful trims, ribbons, beads, and buttons I want to decorate it with. MCCALLS 7763 🪡 This was my first time sewing any pattern from @angelacostumery x @mccallpatterncompany and obviously my version is not meant to be historically accurate but the pattern design is inspired by the Italian renaissance fashion. I got gifted this lovely sage green shantung dupion from @minervadotcom and thought it would be the perfect fit for this pattern. I also chose a contrasting rust satin ribbon to use as bias tape for the edges instead of using the pattern pieces as it didn’t work out with the fabric I had in mind. I was worried it would look too christmassy but love how it turned out with the sage, rust and white in combination. And believe it or not but the petticoat dress is an old one from @asos - and thought it would fit the brief rather than sew a dress just for this occasion. As the pattern is a big over the shoulders - which the McCalls patterns tend to be for me - it does look a little bit baggy and the ribbon isn’t as sharp so if I were to sew something similar I might use the Folkwear 123 Austrian Dirndl bodice with this skirt instead.
