This colour.👌 Fabric: Wool cashmere in Blue Yonder from @supercheapfabrics Pattern: Know Me #me2001 @simplicitymccallsaustralia @simplicity_creative_group Mods: I followed the designer’s lead on one of the versions she made and increased the depth of the sleeve bands (see note below), added 5cm to the length and omitted the belt and belt loops, adding buttons instead. I also used the Tessuti flat pocket method for super neat inseam pockets, added a 1.4cm topstitch to the edges/seams and attached the lining to the garment hem rather than leaving it separate. The coat is also fully interfaced for extra structure (I block interfaced the entire piece of fabric before cutting - time consuming, but worth it). This is a fairly straightforward pattern, which would be a great for coat beginners to cut their teeth on. However, I would recommend adding a bit of extra length to the sleeve bands (especially if using a thicker fabric) so they are slightly longer than the corresponding section of the sleeve piece - the extra length will ensure the band curves neatly around the constructed sleeve without causing any scrunching of the sleeve piece underneath. If increasing the depth of the sleeve bands, be sure to also shape them so they angle out at the top, reflecting the lines of the tapered sleeve piece.

Finally! After borrowing a friend’s sewing machine for the last 5 months, I finally have my own baby 💗 She’s a Brother XR9550, perfectly simple for my speed of sewing at the minute. The lovely Ruan @theyorkshiresewgirl kept me company while I unpacked. Just got a plug a few cords in and do some fiddling with learning to thread it up. And then the most exciting part: figure out what my first make is going to be!!! My latest and first make of 2024 is ready for the weather. It was challenging but I learned so much about handling a loose-weaved wool. It’s cozy, not bulky and the melange of color is difficult to capture on film. I was in Philly this weekend and Teddy (that’s his name) made his debut in the beautiful city! I got so many compliments and admiring stares, and my coat made me feel RICH and important! In September I realised I didn’t have enough fabric and a shorter version was born. In December I realised I didn’t have enough interfacing to proceed. In January I realised I didn’t have a matching thread. Oof getting detailed pics on a black coat are not going to be easy. I’ll be taking more for sure but there was a lot of Instagram boyfriend work this morning and I wanted to have something to show for it. First official 2024 make! 100% stash fabrics, both the black wool coating and green satin lining were gifted to me years ago from the stash of a friend’s grandmother. I have a couple vintage plaid wools that I would love to turn into coats. I have a deep love of a plaid coat. I need to find the perfect coat first so I’ll be working through stash wools and patterns before I actually sew up the plaids. Starting with this one, Know Me 2001. This was a great starting coat pattern. Nothing complicated at all. Some changes I want in the next coat: angled welt pockets on the front panels, an added interior yoke to support a hang chain or loop, potentially venting on the back or the sides. Though I LOVED that this one didn’t have that in today’s freezing temps. I was so cozy in this coat! I cut a straight size 16. If I make this pattern again, I would grade the hips out for a bit more wiggle. I might also enlarge the collar and lapel because I love a sonically sized collar. I’d also put a little more time into finishing details. This was just meant to be a toile, so my lining seams are just trimmed with pinking shears 😂 I did take the time to hand stitch together the coat and lining along the entire collar and attached the lining with thread chains throughout. Winter is still wintering out here so I have time to rock my #knowme2001 coat!! She is gorgeous! 😍 Made from a very heavy boiled wool, so I had to break out the vintage #singer401a to stitch through the thick seams. I used @mimigstyle hack for the belt loops because there was NO way my machine was getting through that many layers as the instructions indicate. I also followed tips from @sewmanju and @alexander_the_tailor for construction. Because the coat is pretty heavy I wanted to try to do as much as I could to stabilize while constructing it. I used interfacing around the seams, till tape for the front facing and a back stay piece. I’m sure I am forgetting things. Next up on the cutting table! I'm finally getting into this beautiful wool I purchased about 5 years ago at @srharrisfabric in Minnesota (yep, I know exactly from whence all my fabrics come 😜). Y'all, this coat is about to be fire, and NOPE, I don't care that I'm in Texas and probably won't get to even wear the damn thing this season! I have so much to say about my new #memade coat #ME2001. It was a true labor of love that took about 7 days to make - and was completed on the cusp of the coldest days of the year. Such a great bookend to this project that I’ve been dreaming of since last year. Swipe left to see some behind the scenes of the construction of this coat. My very first handmade coat 🥹❤️ . It’s official. This jacket is the summation of the last 5 years worth of sewing. In 2022 I started sewing my “bucket list” projects. Those were the projects that scared me the most (jeans, swimsuits, ball gowns, ect). This month, I finally completed that list - and you’re looking at the end result! . My very first completely handmade wool coat. 💃🏻 . Oh and also my first pair of handmade jeans! The amazing @chalkandnotch Isle Jeans Pattern. . The Italian imported wool is absolutely STUNNING. I wanted to use an unexpected color for my jacket to really make it stand out. The Kentucky Blue felt fitting. And can we talk about that lining???? Literally might be my favorite print of all time! It’s a clear winters dream! All the fabric was purchased from @farmhousefabrics. . The pattern is KnowMe 2001. My only modification was to lengthen the sleeve by 1 inch! I cut a size 12 for reference which is a pretty standard size for me in Big 4 patterns. . I am so happy with this end result and got to wear it proudly today for the first time.
