Well, this denim dress was an process, but it was so worth it. Nothing beats the feeling of showing people what can be done with garments destined for trash - this denim came from two pairs of jeans going to the bin due to a broken zipper. I was determined to prove this fabric could be used, and it was luckily just enough for what I had in mind - this bustier denim dress had enough smaller patter pieces that I could fit everything in. . . . I did a number of tuiles to get the bustier top exactly as I imagined it. I used #S1183 as a staring point, however it was significantly modified and simplified to create the bodice I imagined. I combined most of the front panels together to create a simpler bodice structure, and used top stitching to highlight the bodice construction. . . If I had to note anything I would differently it would be the zip to the back - I learnt a better invisible zipper method a couple of projects after this one, and it would have been nice to use that new technique in this project, however overall it functions and it isn’t a big deal compared to front bodice. . . I made the wedding dress of my orange dreams :) and it only took 4 months of obsessively comparing silk swatches, pinterest / vogue runway “research”, googling what the hell is a hand-picked zipper, planning next steps, and SO much hand sewing !! I call this the eschschzolia extravaganza dress — eschschzolia being the genus containing the California poppy. 🧡 This gorgeous silk dupioni is from @silkbaron in the color “Ikura”. Veil and underskirt fabric are from @internationalsilks Construction and process details coming in a later post 🍊 Major thanks to @hannahovereemphoto for these beautiful photos, and for generally making sure that the night went smoothly and that Xander and I felt at ease. And a huge, heartfelt thank you to my best friend @buck.beads, who HAND BEADED my bouquet!! Construction details for the eschzolia extravaganza dress! 🧡 I had to rewrite this caption 3 times because Instagram kept deleting it so please ask if you have any questions I didn’t answer 🥲 I was very fortunate to attend a 6-day couture sewing intensive taught by Susan Khalje. This provided me some crucial guidance as I was starting out and definitely set the tone for a higher quality final product. Plus I have a newfound love of wax tracing paper and sew-in interfacing <3 The inner corset is adapted from #s1183. It has a back hook and eye closure, as well as a grosgrain ribbon waist stay and underbust stay that close with a hook and bar that I sewed into place the day before the wedding to have them fit just right. These were nice assurance to have because as a human, i didn’t know what my exact measurements would be on the day of the wedding. The outer fabric is silk dupioni (didn’t need to be same as fashion fabric but hey, it’s pretty!) and the lining is a pink cotton lawn. The corset is boned with spiral steel boning. The cups have underwires and a bit of padding that I covered in the lawn and hand sewed to the cups. It is attached to the outer bodice at the top edge, with the neckline seam stabilized with twill tape. The boning channels are topstitched between the outer and inner layers (lots of hand basting and patience). The corset is cropped below the waist and the edge is finished with lace. The bodice has two layers: a plain cotton bodice stay, and a doubled dupioni outer layer. Susan draped the bodice stay directly onto my corset as I wore it, and then created the front dart details by adding a CF seam. I later manipulated the toile to eliminate the CF seam. The skirt has four layers. The innermost is a silk crepe de chine full circle skirt, with a 2” stiff horsehair braid hem for volume. Next is a full silk organza circle skirt. The other two layers are box pleated dupioni skirts. The outer layer is hand-hemmed with a catch stitch, invisible from the outside. The skirt comes from #m8060.
