Finished Project: Making this dress was an experience! I'll chat about the experience in a later post. First of all how stunning are these photos!! Like not in a way to brag but nature is miraculous. I had this vision to take pictures by a local lake and I am so glad I did. I took these early in the morning and the natural light is just… I can’t explain it. Sorry in advance that you can not tell the details of the dress. I will be making a detailed view for all the sewing nerds. For now, just want to showcase how excited I am to have this dress finished and to have these pretty pictures.  I thought about making the pictures lighter in post production but the adjustments did not give the pictures justice. Plus I am not a pro photo editor 😆. The last two pictures I wanted to showcase nature so I didn’t crop the pictures. Look how small I am compared to the trees 🌲. Also, just look at nature without me in the picture (the last slide). I just can’t. This is when the artist in me really comes out. I am just so inspired by nature. I could just take pictures of rocks, flowers and frogs and just be so happy (I actually did at one point). Vogue Patterns #v1821 I’ve been thinking about making this Rachel Comey pattern for a while. It’s boxy with a lot of volume and a few fun details. Like many before me I found the sleeve insertion challenging, several posts have suggested adding the sleeves flat, I think I’ll definitely try that next time. The pockets while essential do change the line of the dress, I don’t know what the solution is. All that aside, I love this dress! I love the volume / form and the angled construction of the back panel wrapping to the front. The best for last, the fabric is our 14 wale cotton corduroy by @robertkaufman. This is a luscious and soft cord with a vibrant color selection! Spots and dots everywhere over here ⭕️ I made the vogue pattern #v1821 in a sumptuous pinwale corduroy as my holiday dress! I think this not-basic basic pattern does a great job of showing off these great polka dots. The fabric was a gift from my mom and she told me, on no uncertain terms, that whatever I made couldn’t have a waist seam so that the dots wouldn’t be broken up (which was a great call, thank you mom) Notes on the pattern: several reviews recommended sizing down, so I did and made a size S. (currently at about a 34” bust and 39” hip) I shortened the skirt by .5” and the bodice by 0.5”, which is pretty standard for me. I omitted the pockets because they seemed like they would just flap around and weigh down the dress if I put anything in them. I also omitted the neck bias binding and instead drafted a front facing and doubled the back yoke and used the burrito method to enclose the back. It took a little trial and error to figure out the correct order of operations, but I like how substantial it feels. I also opted to hem it with a double fold instead of the frayed hemline. It’s a weird pattern to construct. The armscye is strangely shaped because of the angle of the front panel, which means you have to pay extra attention when sewing the side seams so that you stop at the right place. The neckline scoops more in the back than it does in the front. The dress shifts around a lot - some reviewers speculate that it’s the heavier weight of fabric in the back, but I think it’s at least in part because of the shape of the neckline. I wanted to try using the neckline from the Merchant and Mills Box Box dress, which is narrower and has a keyhole in the back, but I couldn’t find my copy of the pattern. Make Number 6 was a Rachel Comey dress in an 8-Wale cotton corduroy by Robert Kaufman that I got at Fabric dot com. I used quilting cotton to do Hong Kong seams throughout, left the hem raw and unpicked the fabric to create a fringe. I really like this shape and I think this pattern would look great in a cotton gauze or something in another color. A dress. With any luck, hopefully I will never make another vogue pattern again. Ultimately I’m happy with how this came out though. Mods. Get ready. Cut XS (my measurements were M but that means nothing in Big 4 patterns) and still removed an additional several inches off the sides. Everyone says the abundant ease is for alterations but I honestly suspect it is so that you buy excess fabric $$$ Added 2 inches to the bodice and 2 inches to the skirt Subsequently adjusted the angle of the front because of this lengthening Re-shaped the curve of the underarm to match front to back (yes - look at other people’s posts about the underarm) Kept the sleeves off because ultimately I just didn’t like any version of long sleeves I came up with. In cold weather I’ve worn it with a snug long sleeve cropped tee over it. The navy twill deadstock from @stonemountainfabric was absolutely perfect for this pattern. I love it. I was completely inspired to make this dress in this exact fabric after seeing a post from @whatlisamade This is the Vogue Rachel Comey dress pattern #V1821 made in lightweight cotton corduroy from @spotlightstores After reading some patterns reviews, I modified the neckline as it’s too wide as drafted and when I saw the width of the dress pattern, I also slimmed the entire bodice as I knew it would swim on me. I ended up needing to further modify the neck line once my dress was pretty much finished, so I ended up cutting straight through the front and back pieces in the middle and too out more volume. Most of the examples that were shared were discarded by the other women as not qualifying as a fail: either because easy fixes were at hand or the make looked actually quite beautiful 🥳 This was the only exception 🤓 Everyone agreed this was a fail. Wrong pattern choice. Has to be either given away to a woman with some shoulders and some bust.... or cut apart to make a table cloth... I love a good happy accident. So as I was cutting out my fabric I completely forgot about the main pattern piece. So I thought I had extra fabric and wasn’t strategic when cutting. Once I realized I was now short fabric and would have to find an alternative. (I was also on a time crunch). I had this beautiful brown coated denim in my stash that worked perfectly. I love how the textures mix and the look it creates. . Also I would definitely lengthen this dress for the next time as it’s very short on me (I’m 5’9”). Made this dress using a Vogue pattern #v1821 , and while it’s not exactly what I envisioned, I’m still pretty happy with how it turned out! I used a printed pinwale cord fabric from @spotlightstores (again from the clearence table) just as the pattern suggested! The colours and texture give it such a cozy feel, perfect for transitioning into cooler weather. I made the XS size, but honestly, it’s still giving major tent energy. If I make it again, I’ll definitely trace a smaller size and make some adjustments to bring in the volume. I also wasn’t a fan of the original boat neckline, so I reshaped it into a rounder style that feels more comfortable on me. The pattern also left the hem raw, but I decided to hem the raw edges. Can’t wait to throw this on with some tights, chunky boots, and maybe a belt to break up the shape a bit. Today on the blog I’ve written about making the Vogue 1821 dress, a Rachel Comey design. Tip one: definitely size down as this is a very roomy make. Tip two: maybe add an inch to the hem, unless you prefer a shorter hemline. This was an easy sew, but a bit frustrating, as I tried to move through the process a bit too quickly. My latest make is extra cozy & roomy for those big holiday meals. 😍 I made this one using gifted cotton corduroy fabric from a neighbor & a Vogue pattern. I left off the pockets at the advice of a new sewing friend who has also made this dress, and I’m quite happy I did because the fabric turned out to be quite thick for even the cuff details. It was also a little suspenseful running out of thread along that long bottom hem. Thankfully I made it around! The last photo is a sneak peek at how I spaced the back gathers, those little clips make all the difference. #V1821

Wellllll was going to post some finished photos of the V1821 dress but I got a cold from my nephew and have not taken photos yet because I'm way too busy laying in bed and blowing my nose. So instead of a finished garment here is the neckline and insides of the dress in progress.⁠ ⁠ You'll notice that I absolutely took the pockets off this dress. IMHO they do not hang right on that angle and are in a weird place. Possible controversy incoming but I do not believe every garment needs pockets! ⁠ ⁠ I also omitted the sleeves cause that's just way too much dress and I really think it looks better and is more wearable without them. Highly rec this mod. Two Vogue by Rachel Comey patterns #v1912 and #v1821. Loved the patterns, although photo setup in my house is not ideal to show. Lengthened the dress by 3”. Shortened the cuff on the sweater by 2”. Stripes courtesy of some table runners from a set sale. Considering making the sweater short set in another fabric as well, the shorts are very comfortable. Would also make the dress again. Winter in the air, so it is time to make dresses with sleeves! ❄️ This dress is inspired by @whatlisamade that @simplicitymccallsaustralia shared a couple of months ago. Lisa also made this dress in a corduroy from Spotlight, so when we saw this fabric we knew we should make our own version 🌸 While this style is loose fitting, we found it REALLY loose fitting. Just in time for the beginning of summer I made another hacked Rachel Comey for Vogue #v1821 combined with the @closetcorepatterns #cielotop in a gorgeous lightweight cotton with a woven floral design from @gorgeousfabrics . In addition to combining the patterns for a slightly more fitted silhouette, I removed the sleeves and removed inches from the gathered skirt for a bit less fabric in the back. This dress is hard to photograph... it's all about the small details in the seam lines and the delicacy of the fabric. Plus, you know, it's black and all.
