SQUARE. NECKED TOP MCCALLS 8287 This is a project I’ve had cut out for absolutely ages and although the picture isn’t really my style I wanted to try a square collar. Now it’s made up it’s totally beautiful but sadly doesn’t fit. It it will in the upcoming months. It’s actually a lot easier to put together than it looks but I did snip one of the corners of the facing just a little too much and so had the sort of stitch again when it understitched and you can see the dodgy corner on the picture. I really like these sleeves but I have chunky arms so would measure better next time. I hand sewed the sleeve cuff to the inside and even though I hate hand sewing it looks way better than trying to sew in the ditch. My side seam invisible zip went in pretty well, was strange as it zips up from the bottom. But don’t think the instructions for the zip were as good as they could be. If you haven’t done one before I don’t think it would turn out well. Sewing Level Required: Advanced Beginner Size made: 20 Ease of instructions: 8/10 Clarity of instructions: 8/10 Accuracy of sizing: 9/10 Time taken to sew: 2.5 hours Cost of make: £4.50 Fabric used: 2m of 115cm polycotton Source of fabric: Pound Fabrics Overall Success: 9/10 Would I make it again? Here’s a few pics of my latest me-made outfit, which I made using Simplicity 9590 (#S9590) for the overalls and McCalls 8287 (#M8287) for the coordinating top! The pockets are hand-embroidered. I published a Reel last week documenting the process I used to create them, in case you’re curious! The floral fabric is cotton lawn printed by @spoonflower and donated by the artist who designed the print, @nancyleesspoonflowershop. It’s based on one of her original paintings! It’s so pretty and I enjoyed working with it. Thank you Nancy! I admire your painting talent and I tried to honor our collaboration to the best of my ability. Every time I wear these overalls I will be reminded of the magic of being a member of a worldwide community of artists and crafters who inspire and support one another. Together we are stronger and better, and I am so grateful for the technology that brought us together. The overalls were a LOT of work - lots of topstitching using jeans-grade yellow-gold topstitching thread, which required switching out my needle and thread every time I encountered a topstitching step. But I think the effort was worth it in the end, and I’ve been wanting to make a pair of overalls, complete with proper hammered-on overalls hardware, so now I can mark that item off my sewing bucket list! I probably will make them again. I made Size Medium (combined sizes 14-16) and I love the fit. The top is Size 12 with a 5/8” per side / 1-1/4” total FBA, and I lowered the side darts a bit. I am VERY happy with the fit and overall (no pun intended 😉) style. The top would have fit around me without an FBA, due to the amount of style ease in this garment, but sometimes an FBA is not just about getting the thing to go around your body - it’s about getting the garment to lay properly on your frame, similar to how it would look on a person with a B-cup, design ease and all.
