#memademay2024 #mmm24 today I’m wearing my Vogue patterns #v1799 Rachel Comey dress in cotton poplin from @littlemousesews I’ve posted this dress to stories before but not to the grid. I made a few mods to this dress. I left off the sleeves and bias bound the armholes. It still covers my shoulders but is just a bit cooler to wear on the hottest days. I added a dart to the bodice just to make it come in a little cleaner at the sides. I added a design detail by sewing on grain strips of orange fabric as a trim around the inset side panels. I sewed them to the main dress continuously, then just folded the corners neatly and top stitched them. Then I sewed in the gathered side panels as per usual. The finished trim size is 2cm. The strips started out as 4cm. (0.5cm seam allowance, 2cm exposed, 1.5cm seam allowance). I put some photos in a highlight on my profile if you need a visual. Then I did an exposed v neck facing to echo the trim. I folded in the edges and top stitched it down.

Finally uploading some makes from a hectic start to the year. This vogue #v1799 pattern is super comfy to wear. I modified the sleeve to suit my build and added a bit more interest with the bias trim. I made Vogue 1799, the Cardiff Dress by Rachel Comey in that pink and orange seersucker from Spotlight. It is eminently suitable for pastel Easter photos at the shops and feeding kangaroos. It has pockets but because the dress is so oversized, it feels uncomfortable to have anything heavy in them. I have a laundry list of alterations to make this pattern work. Sizing down, an FBA, shaving off the seam at the shoulder (see @wzrdreams version) to raise the dress and close the neckline more, and then still needing to add a tie so that it didn’t shift around too much. I also made my neckline binding wider just because it was easier to manipulate at the front with the V. Overall, I really like it and have worn it at least 5 times since I made it. I really like the oversized style, it is so good to wear in humid weather. I think the FBA gave it a nice smooth fit from the side, while still keeping the over-sized look. It’s also really long, a little lower than mid-shin and I’m 175cm tall. Should you make it? I give it a half-hearted recommendation. Oooof what a saga. I bought this killer green apple table cloth from @ladynextdoorvintage a while back, and had been so fucking excited to make it into vogue #v1799 (a pattern for Rachel Comey’s Cardiff dress). It looks so cute!! But after searching ig and finding @wzrdreams very honest + informative review…I got nervous!! Seems like a lot of fit issues. But I decided to just put my head down and do it. Sometimes you’re just too excited about an idea to think too much about it. I made a small shoulder adjustment from @ginareneedesigns book, thinking that would help with the mobility issues, and altered the pieces just to get them to fit on the fabric (and added some peekaboo side vents with the lace! 😍). Oh and also some ties at the back because I read it had a tendency to slide off the shoulders. Finished it in record time, wore it on a date to the ballet the same night, asked my Bb to take a picture of me for ig, and my heart sunk. I did NOT look like the cool pattern cover girl that I thought I would. Immediately felt all my body image issues flood to the front and felt like a frumpy old ballet master. ANYWAY… long story short, is I’m determined to like this dress!! My sewing skills are improving so much, and it’s really well made, and I just want to wear it and feel breezy cool. So, I’m going to try @wzrdreams after-the-fact alteration to raise the shoulders and neck and see if that helps. First two pictures are with shoulders pinned (better maybe?) and last two are as is, feeling frumps.

#v1799 is done. What a saga! There’s a highlight of my stories saved if you are curious, & a saved live on my igtv where I talk about what’s wrong with it and ultimately how I decided to fix it after the fact. Sizing: I graded between a size XL and XXL… which is sizing down from what the envelope said. I was aiming for 6” positive ease in the bust but I probably only needed 4”. My advice would be to size down one full size. Fabric is lightweight denim from @chicfabrics I did not make a muslin (mistake!!) and made no pattern alterations other than to add a tongue to the pocket bag so it would hang towards the front and not flop around. Overall, I think my altered version looks like how I had hoped this dress would look. The pattern is drafted without error, but the actual fit has some serious problems. The shoulder slope is rather steep for a drop shoulder with such a deep armhole. This makes it very uncomfortable to access the pockets or raise your arms more than 45 degrees. In addition to the mobility issue, the front and back V neckline is quite wide and deep. So much that it does not feel safe and secure on my shoulders. I would not have felt comfortable wearing it to work because it did not pass the bend over test. To fix the finished garment, I unpicked the shoulder seam topstitching & decreased the shoulder slope by taking a 1.25” wedge out at the High Point Shoulder & blending to nothing before reaching the armscye. This raised the armhole enough to improve mobility. It also decreased the neck drop, neck width (yay!) and raised the waist slightly. The first several slides show the “after”. Then a slide showing how I took a 1.25” tall wedge out of the shoulder, dramatically reducing the shoulder slope, and the final slides are the tragic “before”. One more comment. The instructions where pretty typical in that they don’t have any seam finishes or mention pressing. Graded between the XL and the XXL and absolutely no other mods so I could see how well this fit as drafted. All my suspicions where confirmed and I also learned that dropped shoulders with deep armholes need a shallower shoulder slope otherwise the lift of the sleeve becomes a huge problem. Luckily I discovered an easy enough solution to fix this garment while discussing in Live. I also go through what pattern changes I should have made before cutting. Basically, raise the armhole 1.5” and decrease the neck width 2”. I use the U-turn method to make my gathering stitches nice and even. I also placed my stay-stitch on the concave corner just inside the seam allowance, so that I can go back and reinforce my stitching next to it and ensure that the stay stitches are inside and not visible from the outside. #sewing #sewistsofinstagram #wip

I love a quick-gratification sewing project! My previous project was a total fail and will never see the light of day (nor Instagram), so I was eager to make something start-to-finish this holiday weekend to get my sewjo back. The result is this suuuuper comfy linen dress, and I got it done in time to wear out to dinner with a friend tonight! I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Pattern: Vogue 1799 by Rachel Comey. Notes and mods: I sized down one size and made a small (8-10) which still gives me more than three inches of ease through the bust. I reduced the shoulder slope by taking a 1.25” SA at the neck and grading to the regular 5/8” SA at the shoulder. Finally, I added bra strap snap guards at the shoulder seams to help hold the neckline in place during wear because it has a tendency to slide off the shoulder.
