It fits! Now to do all of the interior finishing. This skirt is based on Vogue #V8997, which I’ve made twice as a sheath dress. I had to bring in the side seams (1” taken off total) and back waist (another ~1”) to make it hug my hips better and not slide down, but I’m really happy with the result. This picture has the waist tucked in and the hem still let down, but both have since been pressed carefully to set those creases properly. I’ll be spending the holiday weekend at a convention, and I plan to do plenty of hand sewing while I’m there. Progress pics of the lining will happen! The second photo shows it with the #V7975 jacket mockup so I could get an idea of what the whole suit would look like. „Too hot, too cold pt 10“ 🔥 ❄️ Happy Thursday shiny happy people! ☀️😊 This is one of my „I finished this ages ago but have not taken pictures“ So the idea behind this was being frugal and doing a little hack with fabric that I have inherited from my mother. This is probably the most expensive fabric I have worked with to date (which doesn’t say much because it was, honestly, horrible to work with!) and it is an original Valentino fabric (collection might be around 2009 maybe? Not entirely sure). To be precise, these were fabric scraps leftover from ne of my mother‘s commissions so that also explains why the skirt is so short (I simply did not have more fabric! 🤪) The patterns used are a mash of the @jennyygrace Valentine top and the #v8997 for the skirt. I love the result and will definitely make it again but I am not sure how long this fabric will last to be honest. Thesis kind of a brocade which frays the minute you look at it and it even pulls apart at the seams a little so we will see how long I can actually wear this one. If sewing was a race this would have been a marathon 🤣 #V8997 is not a complicated pattern but you are technically sewing two dresses! The pattern also calls for the bodice to be fully interfaced. I debated about this for a while checking the #. Some people suggested using cotton lawn to line it instead! I had no cotton lawn to hand and didn't fancy another layer of fabric so went with interfacing the pieces instead. The fabric is a viscose from @beyond.thepinkdoor and is just beautiful. No issues with sewing or pressing! Sian from @kittenishbehaviour has a great sewalong which was very helpful. She has great instructions on how to line a bodice with no handsewing which gives a lovely professional finish! Have to say I felt a million dollars in this dress which I wore to a wedding at the weekend. Made size 14 which was spot on with the finished garment measurements printed on the pattern pieces. Day 19 #memademay2025 Back to work - thankfully working from home with my furry workmate (if I'm honest he's a bit of a sleeping partner 😹). We don’t get dolled up too often, so when we do, it’s a good opportunity to make something special. This dress is Vogue patterns #v8997 in a silky smooth cotton from @corefabrics lined with bemberg rayon from @emmaonesock I cut a size 14 but ended up taking about two inches out of the bodice (next time I would size down). I had wanted to add an inch to the drafted length but due to fabric length limitations, I actually removed one inch so that I could get all my pieces out of 4 yards with some creative cutting. Another of my daughters, Eva, found this beautiful silk/polyester blend at @sisterstailor in Hoi An, Vietnam and immediately had an idea of what she wanted to make it with it. We drafted a high waisted pleated skirt then made the crop top using an adapted Vogue 8997 pattern. We added sleeves and adjusted the back - originally she wanted to have buttons but time pressure meant we put in two small hook fastenings instead. Then the matching tie was the finishing touch! In the wild -- where 'wild' is defined as the office elevator. It fits! It's pink! It's *excessive*! It's perfect. When it gets too cold to wear it, I'll start embroidering the skirt. By the time it's done it'll be Much Too Much and I can't wait. Dress linen/cotton from @needlework_hamilton; applique flower is a cotton scrap; threads and flosses from everywhere; cotton voile lining from Fabricland. Dress pattern is V8997. Unicorn is from Sublme Stitching; crazy quilting is improvised; and the bloodroot I copied from a botanical line drawing.

The occasion was great motivation to sew a pattern I haven't made before. I went for Rixo inspired print mixing after seeing both fabrics together in @stash_hub and realising they were the exact same colour combo! 🔵 PATTERN: @simplicitymccallsuk Vogue #v8997 🔵 ADJUSTMENTS: Made a size 16, D cup. The only fit issue with my toile was some gaping on the back V so pinched out the excess and rotated it out of the side back bodice pattern pieces. 🔵 FABRIC: bodice @pigeonwishes.shops cotton seersucker via @sewmesunshine.uk and skirt @rainbowfabrickilburn cotton bought at @thestitchfestival

I was bad about taking good in-progress photos, but I made another new thing! I’m quite pleased with the result, and I look forward to wearing the bolero and dress together in the future. This new bolero is #simplicitypatterns #8462, a rereleased vintage design from the 1940s (post-New Look, based on silhouette). I used the same purple brocade fabric as the kitty ear fascinator for the front facings to give it contrast collar and lapels, and modified the sleeves slightly to add contrasting fold back cuffs. The main fabric is the same lovely (and very drapey) black rayon I used for my second #v8997, the black sheath pictured underneath. I used my customized basic bodice block (#v1004) to help me confirm the initial pattern alterations I needed, and I changed the back dart into a princess seam to conserve fabric and mimic the style lines of the sheath. I used the same broadcloth for the lining too, to provide structure. I opted to remove the lining from the sleeves and bind the armhole with the lining and outer layers together for a clean finish, based on how it looked once the lining was attached, and the result looks and feels better. My only complaint about how the pattern was drafted was how ridiculously wide the shoulders were. Even assuming a super strong 1940s shoulder, they were wider on the pattern than they should be. I’m calling this look “dapper kitty”, because it’s Halloween season now. I do plan to make a pillbox from the same fabric, if I have enough scraps large enough to piece one together. I sewed the maximum length together - which is between view B and C - and only cut / rounded the hem at the very end. (It's still not completely round... the sides tend to drop🤷? Will have to wait for Lore's return to even it out) The wiggling linen requested that aligning the colour blocks of the top to the skirt's took 3-4 attempts for each panel... 😏 I inserted the pockets at the inner seam as I wanted the pocket colour to match its respective side panel and didn't have enough grey... and then, of course, sewed the panel inside out... Jumping in before May is done to share a couple of my makes this month, along with a couple of others' makes too! . A lot of my time over the past few weeks has been taken up with a wedding (son number 3 and his beautiful wife) and getting organised to go on holiday, so I've not been around on IG much recently. . I have had permission to post some pics from the wedding which was a couple of weeks ago, and it features a submission for #MagamSewalong #MagamMovingMay - a new dress which travelled with us to the wedding, and another great theme from @sewing_in_spain @suestoney and @macusewinglove . The first pic is my son and his new wife, on an #EastLothian beach, on a perfect hot and windless day, with the Bass Rock just out of shot. We are standing under an "arch" which my son made from all the old floorboards which he lifted from their living room floor 18 months ago and repurposed perfectly! . I am wearing my new #V8997 - not what I had intended to wear, but that's a whole new post for another time! It was perfect for the day and for the location. I don't have many pics of my dress so may repost that too. . Pic 3 - the groomsmen making an aisle, edged with dried grasses and flowers; the gorgeous dried flower bouquets, buttonholes and table arrangements from @beewildblooms fitted in perfectly . Pic 4 - my four best makes! . Pics 5-7 - my lovely, multitalented daughter-in-law @h.jam.es helped me make 100 strings of hearts from old maps and sheet music, which we strung up in the barn where the reception was held; tiny hearts, along with seashells surrounded the dried flower arrangements and lanterns on the tables. She also crocheted the cute mice which adorned the Cheese Cake. . My 94 year old dad arrived at the beach in style courtesy of an amazing charity in North Berwick which loans out beach wheelchairs @beachwheelchairsnb , and two of my nephews! . Sleeves in 👏 this dress project got set aside for 3 reasons: - I needed to prewash the lining - I used the zipper that was meant for this dress on a skirt project instead and needed to get another one - I got kind of into making pants I’m a big believer in working on what inspires you! Even if that means putting a project aside for a week or two. It’s supposed to be fun! It’s not a job. Fourth reason too, it’s been super cold here and a little dress seemed unnecessary 🥶 but now I’m picking it up again! I had the best time at @seattlefrocktails last night! Nothing like being in a room full of the same kind of nerd as you 🤩 Big shoutout to the organizers and @mtmcil, @cm.sews, and @nw_jess for being the best dates! This is #v8997 in poly velvet that shows evvvvverything! It may not look like much but I’m so proud of the technical skill that went into this dress. I cut out the bodice at least 3 times and did major mods to get the fit just right. I did my first blind hem, after serging the bottom edge with the differential feed cranked up to create gathers so the hem wouldn’t look ripply. And did I mention how much fun it was to be in a crowd of people who could appreciate all that work?? Fit notes: at some point I’ll do a separate construction post, but my measurements put me in a size 22, which turned out to be huge on me. I ended up with a mix of sizes 16 and 18. Big 4 sizing is so weird. The pattern does come with separate cup sizes - I’m actually a C but I ended up modifying the D cup pieces after I cut directly into the tissue and made the C pieces unusable. Anyway. Instead, I used the gorgeous weather to dress up in my new favorite dress. I present to you: „La Loren“ named after the divine, amazing, beautiful Sophia Loren and her iconic red dress from „Scandal in Sorrento“. This is another project as part of the #minervabrandambassador program and this fabric (a stunningly beautiful cotton sateen by John Kaldor) was gifted to me on exchange for content on their website. Small breakdown on what I did on this dress: the pattern is a mixup between the „Carousel Dress“ by @gertie18 from her Patreon exclusive collection. When I saw this pattern I knew this could work to recreate the Sophia Loren dress. What I did to hack the pattern was using the neckline from the #v8997 for a deep V instead of the round neckline and add two more flounces on the bottom. This dress is so amazing to me, I love the look and especially I love the fit! It is well fitted and shows your curves but is also super comfy. 💍🍾❤️ I got hitched! ❤️🍾💍 And I made my dress! The design was by far the hardest part. I went through maybe 15 different patterns before I landed on this #v8997 bodice with the @deer_and_doe_patterns #ddmagnolia, with self drafted sleeves and cuffs. Despite changing directions so many times, I ended up right back at my original inspo design, and it was perfect. I felt amazing in it! Main Fabric is 4-ply 100% silk crepe, with sheer silk chiffon sleeves, and silk crepe de chine, all from @moodfabrics premium collection. I learned a lot about working with silk! Now that it’s all over I hope I can take a look back and try to document some of the process! And how handsome is my husband?😊 feels so weird to call him that after nearly ten years!

Tip of the day: compare finished measurements on a pattern to clothing in your closet if you like how it fits 🪡 I have a dress I like that’s similar in shape to this vogue pattern so I measured key parts to see how it would compare. I will still make a muslin of the bodice but this helps to see if it’ll be similar to the dress I know like! Most patterns should include finished measurements somewhere - Vogue are on the pattern pieces - or you can measure across each piece and add it up. #v8997 #blackbirdfabrics #2025sewing

My Vogue #v8997-derived couture style pencil skirt is all done! I think I spent about 25-30 hours total, from pattern layout to sewing on the hook and thread loop above the zipper. That included refining the fit a bit after major construction was complete. About 10-12 hours were hand finishing the lining and all edges, which I did while camped out at a strategically located table in a high traffic area at @bayconnews. I got a TON of questions and admirers over the couple days I spent sewing it. Main inspiration for this dress was a cute simple dress from the Versace Spring/Summer 2022 RTW Collection. I had leftover fabric from my „Purple Rain“ jumpsuit and some Thai silk that my aunt had gifted me and (sad but true!) I almost threw away! I had cut a Thai fisherman’s pant out of the fabric and never finished it so I thought I would not be able to do something else with it. This is a return to pattern #v8997 for me which I previously made with the flared skirt and flutter sleeve version. I made the pencil skirt sleeveless version which made the two fabrics come together perfectly. For the final finishing touch, I added recently bought „Versace“ style safety pins for the perfect look. I christened this one „The Donna“ based on the character from the TV show „Suits“ portrayed by Sarah Rafferty as this could be in her wardrobe as well: bold, sexy, confident. Dress Progress: I didn’t want to use fusible interfacing on the bodice in case it separates over time. Went with a cotton lawn instead and sewed it into the seam allowances. It looks great I’d say! From the front you can’t see anything. And when I clipped the seam allowances I could clip to the stitching and not worry about it fraying into the seam line. #v8997 #blackbirdfabrics #2025sewing
