I turned 30 today, but since it's a Monday, I gave myself a long weekend as a gift to dress up, spend time with friends, and just do whatever I felt like. It was a break I needed. Did birthday dinner and cake last night since it was still the weekend for everyone else. Holiday season 2024 has officially started. Kicking off the season with my boo’s company party and it was such a fun night. I found this fabric during my October trip to the LA fabric mart and while I was initially drawn to the black face side of the fabric, it was the back red side that really sold me. I am a sucker for a beautiful red and the black and green tones on the back side were so inspiring to me. I did struggle with what pattern to make and almost made another Sweetheart Flounce dress by Pattern Establishment but finally pivoted to this Vogue pattern. I love the skirt on this pattern but the top has failed me twice so I tossed the top I made and used the ByHandLondon Kim bodice pattern which fit like a dream. I kept the Vogue skirt and everything worked out. I am so pleased with this dress and wish I had events to wear it to on the daily. The dress I started making for NYE so I could pretend I was Cameron Diaz in the final scene of The Holiday but didn't finish in time 🤦 At least I'm super organised for next year though, right?! I couldn't rave about this pattern more. It has the most incredible, dramatic skirt that gives me real Oscar de la Renta vibes. The shape is so timeless too, I'm totally making a white version of this for our wedding week! Sewing with velvet however is not for the faint hearted. I used a satin lining and everything kept sliding around, it did my head in 😂 lots of basting saw me through. The hassle was worth it though IMO. I'm totally obsessed with the diamante trim. It was a bit fiddly to attach and I haven't done the neatest job but once I got into it, the hand sewing was actually really enjoyable... I can't believe I'm saying that, am I okay?! My little black plisse dress, with pearl straps and bows, paired with my Audrey Hepburn #v1884 satin skirt. The dress is a self drafted, with some inspo from the #sicilyslipdress. All the details of how I constructed this dress are on an earlier post, but the short version is: ✨I made the straps with 12 lb fishing line, pearls, and reinforced with felt and strong thread inside the bodice of the dress. The notes on the skirt are: ✨the skirt is the #v1884 made with luxury satin gifted from @minervadotcom ✨I made the second smallest size, 26” waist, no modifications to the skirt accept it wasn’t attached to the bodice. This one was made in a mad rush for a work Christmas party, think I was up at 3am finishing this one off. Was going for Oscar de la Renta vibes. Originally I had put in a horse hair braid on the hem but it became wayyyyyy to poofy, so I removed it. Also, it has pockets!!!!! If you couldn't tell, the theme was white 😂 Ended up with red wine stains from some very drunk colleagues haha (thankfully they faded to almost nothing in the wash!). Not sure when I'd wear it again, just don't think white is my colour! But I'd probably use the same pattern again with another fabric. I think this is my first Vogue pattern! Made Dec 2022. Me Made Post! : Vogue 1884 🧵🪡 I know there’s a few of you that follow me for sewing content and then get stuck seeing terrible photos of blocked stages and big meals, so this one’s for y’all! *I made the Vogue 1884 out of a brocade from @joann_stores No adjustments to the pattern except for fitting the bodice at the waist and shortening the straps and hem which is an always alteration for me. I used the largest size for the skirt pieces which was clearly unnecessary for this thicker fabric, but would do that again for a lighter fabric. This also made it so I had to hand hem yaaaards of fabric which I truly hate doing. **As always, I need to warn new sewers of commercial patterns. The instructions are BASIC. They also never mention finishing so those are areas you have to think through as you go. If youre newer to sewing I 1000% recommend independent designers who have tested instructions and many times videos to help follow along. #memade #v1884 #voguepatterns

I’M A DOCTOR ♥️🎓   but don’t ask me for medical advice 🙅‍♀️🤣   I had to commemorate the end of this wild journey the same way I spent it: panic-sewing a garment while procrastinating on all the much more important tasks in my life ✨   Pattern: #v1884   Size/Mods: Graded a size 6 A-cup bust to a size 12 at the waist and hips. My current measurements are: HB: 31”, FB: 32”, W: 26.5”, H: 36”. I don’t like the butt ruffle detail on the original pattern, so instead, I mirrored the front skirt pieces and replicated it on the back, which worked great!   Fabric: Teal Blue Silk Satin Charmeuse from @threadymadenyc . (The fabric was kindly gifted. I reached out to them as I love their vast collection of deadstock fabrics and am so pleased with the quality of everything I received!)   The lining is a light pink viscose crepe given to me by @hannahstitchez last year!   This was my first time sewing with 100% silk, and holy moly is it SOFT and delightful. It was far easier to work with than I anticipated, and the only hiccup was discovering its too light weight to pair with a horsehair braid hem (so I ripped that out and used a ban-roll baby hem which worked perfectly!).   While I’m happy with the finished dress, this project was a reminder that fancy dresses just aren’t my preferred sewing project. I’m so glad to have this dress and know it’ll be great for formal occasions (esp bc it has POCKETS), but still it’s back to basics for me (jeans, anyone?)   With toiling, cutting, sewing, etc. I spent probably 20 hours on this project over four days. The fabrics were free, pattern was $6 and invisible zipper was $5. Had an awesome night at Canberra Frocktails last night!! This introvert was still calming down well into the night after getting home but it was so nice meeting everyone in person and seeing all the amazing outfits! Thank you organisers for putting together such a fantastic night! I wore a Vogue dress #v1884 in red silk dupioni from @minervadotcom. I lined it in silk crepe and it has horsehair braid in the hem to give it extra oomph. Not gonna lie, this was a trial to fit which was surprising given the pattern has cup sizes! I ended up going from a size 10A in the bust to a 14 in the waist with some additional tucks taken out from the side panel. Overall I'm happy with the final dress and had a great time wearing it. 🤍 Sewing my own wedding dress PART TWO: The cutting process began with the deepest clean of my bench top and table to ensure no oil/food marks on my fabric. I am obsessed with long stretches of uncut fabric; the potential for it to become a new creation once you get working, the challenge of laying your pieces more closely than the pattern has suggested so you can save fabric for the stash. Rocco helped me cut the fabric and this required stern words about staying on his chair and his chair only while I worked. After cutting yards and yards and yards of satin lining and interfacing, I assembled the bodice. First impression: it was yuck. The straps were too long for me, the seams were pointy on me, so I’d have to go down a cup size or two (surprise, surprise, my body is an oddity to the pattern making world, why did I dare assume it would be as simple as getting it right on the first go.) I decided to abandon the original pattern bodice and go for something I had more faith in- pattern hacking something I owned. I decided to take a black corset top I wear all the time and create a pattern from it. #v1884 from vogue patterns When I saw the Alexander McQueen skirt just like this I knew I had to try to make it for myself. This pattern comes as a dress so I just added my own waistband to finish it as a skirt. I did all the handstitching and I think it was worth it. The horsehair hem is so bouncy and the skirt is SO full. I browsed the hashtag and saw everyone spinning in their photos. It can't be helped!! You just put a little extra bounce in your step wearing this skirt! I don't feel like I have great top options for most of my skirts so I'm trying to figure out how to style it still. Vogue #V1884 has been getting mixed reviews about fit so I used a thrifted bedsheet instead of my planned brocade. My verdict: bodice needs fitting adjustments I’m not willing to figure out. I made the smallest bodice size 6A graded to 10 at waist down. 6A lists finished bust measurement 34”, which is much too roomy for a fitted bodice with very low back. After construction I added a center front neckline dart, shortened the straps, and called it good enough for a first draft. There won’t be a second draft. NYC Outfit Roundup ✨ Kevin and I spent a long weekend in New York for my brother’s wedding on Long Island, and then extended our trip 36 hours since Kevin’s never been to the city before! We had so much fun and fit tons in! The main reason we extended our stay was to hit up Eleven Madison Park🍴for our belated anniversary dinner and it was amazing!! 🥂We also saw Book of Mormon on broadway, (my second time seeing it here, but 11 years later - 5 of which were spent in Utah - it really hit different 😂) I did go to Mood Fabrics but since I don’t need any fabric I just snagged some cute buttons! I only made two things for this trip, a jewelry pouch from a free pattern I found @applegreencottage which worked perfectly (last pic)!! And a tie which you might be wondering why Kevin’s not wearing and that’s because the tie is CURSED, fuck it - we shall pretend I never embarked on that awful journey 😅 thank god one of my brothers had a spare tie that worked. I packed my new @sandgrensofficial clogs (Victoria in Navy size 38 - I’m a US. 7.5-8) and they were surprisingly comfy for dancing the night away at the wedding & wandering the city (I wore diff shoes for the heavy walking days tho). #MeMadeMay2023, Days 20 - 27: Day 20: Max 19C, 🌞 but cool. Red #NovaCoat + #IkuntjiArtists #TessutiInesShirt + rtw jeans and wool cashmere jumper. This outfit was a bit warm in the sunshine but otherwise perfect. Very happy to realise I can pop a light jumper under this shirt. Day 21: Max 19C, windy, felt like 12C. I was too cold to think of an interesting me-made outfit so it's just my #PapercutNova coat + rtw wool dress, slip and boots. I tried making a ruboff of this dress last year but it wasn't a success... Day 22: Max 19C, 🌞, not windy! This outfit was gloriously cosy: #TessutiFrankie dress (merino wool, lined) under last year's #V1884 frocktails skirt with the elastic taken in 8cm 😮. Rtw cardigan and shoes.  I don't think I've ever worn a dress under a skirt and I like it! Day 23: Max 20C, 🌞 😀 #V1466 Donna Karan jacket (sadly a bit small) + psychedelic Geometric #SAFlick top, thermal top, rtw jeans.  When I made this top I thought it might be too loud for me but it's not 🤜. Day 24: Max 20C, 🌞 again New #V8825 merino wool dress w thermal top, tights and heels.  I added a rtw coat and changed shoes later - my feet just aren't used to heels these days. Very happy with this dress and would consider making another if I didn't already have a million other patterns waiting to be sewn! Day 25: Max 23C, ☁️, cooler than it sounds. #V1454 top, #SAParker coat, + rtw wool jumper, pants and loafers. Unfortunately these pants aren't suitable for cold weather as they're a tencel blend - my legs were COLD! Love the colours though. Day 26: Max 17C, ☁️, felt like 10C. Layered up in a #TessutiLisa dress, rtw long sleeve blouse, self-drafted thick wool jumper, #SANova coat + stockings and boots.  Felt pretty bulky but warm - I don't normally do this much layering but it works!! Day 27: Max 18C, 🌞. #V1466 skirt + silk twill #RemyRaglan top, thermal top, rtw coat. This looks like a cosy outfit but I was cold! I've still got handmade options but am running out of steam even without daily posts!
