I was pretty excited about the McCall’s spring release last week - so many great patterns! I was super thrilled about #m8283 which is a girls’ pattern. I bought it for my girls but ended up making it for me first. 😂 I moved the pattern an inch from the fold line on the front and back, essentially adding two inches to each side to accommodate my grown lady, non-girl sized butt. I added pockets and next time I’ll add a little length to the sleeve. It is such an easy little quick sew and so comfortable! McCall's M8283 I definitely need to grade between sizes, but I sewed up these 2 dresses on Friday 😍 Notes for future reference; do not, and I mean, DO NOT disregard body measurements because they fit into a pattern size that seems too small, based on the pre-made clothing sizes children wear! For the youngest, I definitely needed to grade between the 3 and the 7, rather than straight up making the 7. That being said, the eldest's measurements were in line with the size I made, yet its still come up big 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm trying to decide between adding some belt loops and making tie belts to cinch in, or adding some shirring to the back?! Which would the more experienced sewists (is that even a word? I don't know but "sewer" just seems...no, thank you!) recommend, or would you do something else? Let me know ⬇️⬇️ The pattern is marketed as a "learn to sew" pattern. I can sew, but wanted something simple and quick. The explanations of how to do things (such as sleeve insertion and attaching the skirt to the bodice) are scant and non specific. Maybe that's because I'm used to indie designer patterns, but I definitely think the instructions could be improved upon. That being said, these were an incredibly quick make, with no difficult construction or sewing techniques and I had them done in a few hours! I made another matching mummy and daughter outfits for Easter. I’m loving these makes as long as I get away with it before my daughter tells me to stop😂. My top is the free onil pattern by @paulinealice_patterns and my daughter’s pattern is #m8283. I sewed size 14 for my daughter so it’s a bit too big on her but she will grow into it and hopefully wear it for another year or so. For my top, the only change I made was to lengthen the sleeves by an inch or 2. Next time, I may go up a size or 2 as it was a bit snug around the neckline. The fabric is cotton lawn that I bought on my London trip few years ago, cotton lawn is fast becoming one of my fav fabrics to sew and wear👌🏾. It’s just a few pieces with lots of elastic shirring. *I did alter the pattern by adding another tier. That’s pretty much my go to move for most patterns these days. Give me all the layers- the twirlier, the better.
