This one’s a lesson on adapt adapt adapt (and make good fabric choices). Got this lightweight cotton poplin and Simplicity pattern #S9101 with the idea of making a workwear-appropriate dress. It ended up looking exactly like a belted hospital gown (swipe to see a recreation of the original) so I put it away for the night and used a different pattern (#v1777) to adapt and prevent a big fabric waste the next day. I’m pretty happy with the end result and relieved I could use what I’ve learned to create something entirely new! And did I mention it has pockets? I really love pleats, they are just so satisfying! Not so sure about welt pockets but they are a bit more interesting than side seam pockets. I’ve just got to neaten the waist seam, hem it and tack the cuffs up. I think I’ll also tack the bodice shut otherwise there will be some serious gaping. The bodice is done! The collar isn’t quite right but I’m happy with it - probably most people wouldn’t spot that anything was wrong and those who did would be too polite to mention it. The next step is to make the welt pockets in the skirt but that’s definitely a job for another day. Not sure why this pattern is rated easy/facile? My hack of the #voguepatterns #V1777 bodice will work to use up the leftover lyocell twill.😀 I took apart the bedsheet trial bodice that checked my SBA, joined the fronts along the centre and traced on the new neckline to see the result. The top will be four inches longer with shaped hem taken from the V1515 top and the neckline taken from dress 105 from #burdastyle052016 - both can be seen earlier on my grid. All finished on my Rachel Comey dress! The only things I’ve done differently to the #voguepatterns instructions are to press the waist seam up and slip stitch the bodice overlap closed. It’s a bit longer than I’d expected (I didn’t actually check the length), I’m 5’6” for reference and wearing heels. And pretty oversized, this a size S but I’m normally a 10/12 bust and 14 hips in vogue. Burdastyle 10/2019 104, probably lengthened for a dress in dark green lyocell twill (second photo) 3. Vogue 1777 Rachel Comey Tempo dress in blue leaf twig fruit print rayon batik (third photo) for a late spring family wedding. 4. Vogue 1730 Marcy Tilton pants. Modify pattern to have fly zip and reduce volume at back waist. Need to find fabric. 5. Burdastyle 11/2020 101 pleated, spiral side seam pants in blue cotton canvas (4th photo). I'll need to do substantial shortening - it's a tall pattern. 6. Burdastyle pocket skirt 105 from 02/2017. It's a summer favourite in printed poplin. Use 6 oz. dark blue linen leftover from the bibbed skirt - or maybe make shorts 104 from same issue. The wool cropped pants version are another wardrobe favourite. 7. I wanted to start this #v1777 dress on Saturday but discovered that past me only bought 2m of this fabric and I needed 3m. ✂️Another one for #shirtyseptember! ✂️ This perfectly designed shirtdress is Vogue #V1777 by @rachelcomey for Vogue Patterns, made up in a pretty printed broderie anglaise. My client had already cut into this fabric to make something else for herself and gave me what was left to make the dress, so believe me there was quite a bit of fiddling and cutting in stages - some single layer some double - to make it all fit. Surprisingly, this is quite a substantial fabric - and with so many layers at the centre front wrap, what with all the pleats and double layer crossovers, it was pretty bulky there. This is a pull over dress: no closures anywhere. The pattern says 'easy' although I've never made a welt pocket in this way before. But I like it, so will aim to use it on another project. (Stealing ideas again! 😂) I was glad for @pkaysews posts & review of this one - I agree the instructions for the welt pockets are limited and if you've never done a welt pocket before they're totally disheartening. My client changed her mind AFTER this was cut 🙄, wanting a centre front box pleat instead of the crossover inverted ones: she was worried it would make her look pregnant. It now shows up that centre front seam, and the slight cocoon shape has been lost, too, but I did as I was asked. Only the bodice is lined in the pattern, so I drafted an A-line skirt lining because I really didn't want any more bulky pleats at the waist. And then, at the first fitting, client decided she wanted longer sleeves - I was definitely beginning to lose patience with her! But I had no more fabric. So I lengthened them by losing the foldback cuff and piecing a facing & lining as a result. Finally, I added button & loop to the front wrap - even though I don't think this would slip or gape, she wanted that security. 1. My first sewing project this year, made my favourite dress (Vogue V177) last month for my son's birthday dinner. Little did I know that denim dresses would be trending for spring - I don't leave the house that often and mostly watch cat reels 🫣😆 2. The lining was an old IKEA cotton duvet cover as I didn't have any other fabric to use, so glad I used it as it's super soft. 3. This dress is technically great, but just not for me. The style is just too boxy for my figure & taste. Maybe I chose the wrong fabric. No hard feelings though because it was fun to make & I practiced some new skills. I devoted a lot of attention to detail & skipped any short cuts. I tried adding a belt, additional darts, raising the waist but in the end it's just not for me- and for those reasons, I'm out. I’ve had this pattern #v1777 for a while now. It’s a Rachel Comey design. It looks simple, yet it wasn’t. The first time I attempted this pattern, I failed and trashed the top before I even got to the skirt. It was HARD. But it’s been a couple years, so I figured I should try again. And well, it wasn’t as bad, but I had major issues with the welt pockets. I blame it on the poor instructions. Anyhoo she’s finished and I kinda like it. I shortened the bodice 2 inches. Was back at the machine the last 2 days. This is another V1777. This time in quilted cotton bought from @thefineclothcompany. I chose ecru as I wanted a plain background to showcase all my lovely scarves and shawls this winter (like this one I bought from knitter friend Alaine - it’s a Stephen West design). I went quite rogue on this one. Did no lining as it would have been too bulky and I was lazy. I did finish all edges of the pieces with a ZZ (talk about time consuming 🙄). Simple seams, pressed open. I had to rethink collar construction with the lack of lining. Totally lengthened the sleeves to 13”and used the natural selvedge as the hem edge. Sewed the sleeves in flat before the SS. No pockets (I know!) as the welts would’ve been too bulky and I was too lazy to draft side seamers. Added a piece of handwoven at the hem on one side. Sewed the front crossover halfway closed. It gapes quite a bit. Tried to match the windowpanes but didn’t always work. The dress has good weight and will be perfect for studio weaving in the winter.

Despite good instructions and illustrations I still messed up the welt pocket and had to cut out a new skirt front piece. I made Vogue 1777, a Rachel Comey design in cotton sateen from Nerida Hansen, the cool print is by Melanie McIlwain. This is an oversized dress with no closures which is pretty much how I like all my dresses. My measurements put me as an XL but I bought the smaller size range because it was the only one there. So I started with an M. I did a 1” FBA and this gave me the extra room I needed at the waist as well as changing the shape of the bodice so it is more 3D, in the way that I am 3D. 🌄 The back bodice is the M however. So does this look like the intended fit? I also shortened the bodice at the back by 6cm, and tapered it until about 1/4 of the way at the front. It just looked saggy. I could maybe still take a bit more off. The skirt is midi length, below mid-calf, but above the ankle. I kept messing up the full length picture and then I ran out of time to take another picture because dinner was ready. Something I thought was interesting: there is a front sleeve piece but the sleeve is part of the bodice at the back. The bodice has a cut on facing and is also lined, so the collar insertion is really tidy and the finish is really clean. I made 7mm seams at the under arms (the width of my overlocking) so that the curved under arm seam wouldn’t cause much rippling under the arm. Snipping into my seams to allow them to relax stresses me out - maybe having small seam allowances isn’t much better strength wise, I dunno! It makes me feel better. 🤣 I left off the cuffs because I though the sleeves looked good where they ended on my arm. I folded the opening in by 1cm and then folded the lining in by 1.3 cm, and hand stitched the lining to the turned up outer hem. So my sleeve hems are invisible, and the whole look is really clean. I top stitched my skirt hem, but that’s the only visible stitching on the outside of this dress. I think this print is awesome in this design but I can see why the recommended fabrics are weightier suiting type fabrics. I did in seam pockets rather than welts because I have never done welts in lightweight fabric and I was worried I’d just end up with holes at the pocket corners and pulls in the cotton sateen. 6/30m
