I finished my #coat a week ago and have worn it every day since then. So she's still missing buttons and buttonholes and also has a hem that refuses to lie flat despite ACTUALLY BEING EVEN (see the last slide lol) but I was definitely not expecting to get through pretty much the whole coat in a weekend. It was a surprisingly satisfying sew and had just enough new things to challenge me but enough familiarity to stop me from feeling overwhelmed. 💜 Construction Notes 💜 Pattern is Butterick's #b6385 and wowee it is some #sewlimited sizing for sure (which I knew going into it but yikes when will the big 4 learn?). The internet seemed so divided over whether the pattern ran large or small, which did not help my sizing choices but I really think depends on your ease preference. I made a 14 (which corresponded to my measurements) and it fits me really comfortably over a sweater and jeans. As a standalone garment, it definitely has more ease than I prefer but it's a coat lol. I'll be wearing it over my 5 other layers and so it needs that extra ease. However, I will say the sleeve size seems a bit cooked. Whilst I'm pretty used to allowing for extra space in tops for my shoulders, this feels excessive. I ended up doing a 1.5in bicep adjustment, lowered the armscythe by an inch and cut the size 18 for the arm pieces. All of that resulted in a sleeve that felt like it had a similar amount of ease to the rest of the garment, which feels suss to me. Alternatively maybe I'm just so buff that I've gotta start hulk-proofing my clothing 😂 Main fabric is a gorgeous wool cashmere from @supercheapfabrics and lining is a cotton duvet cover I thrifted about 5 years ago and could never find the right project for it. I liked it so much I actually brought it with me when I moved from Perth to Tas but I could never decide what to do with it - clearly it was just waiting until this moment. I'm also very very aware I could have spent the extra 30 mins and pattern matched that lining but to be completely honest, just didn't want to 💁🏻‍♀️ Hopefully will tackle the buttons this week and if anyone's got any tips to fix how the hem is hanging, please let a girl know!

The moment has come! I will start sewing my first coat with this lovely fabric which is a blend of wools. This fabric has been in my drawer for almost a year because I was too afraid to ruin it... However, now that I have found the perfect pattern, the #Butterick #B6385, I can't wait to start!!!! I have chosen the model C because I like the high collar. In December I had the privilege of going to Paris for work, and went to Coupons de Saint Pierre and scored this very me-ish minty wool. SWOON for that color. For the two months afterwards went around wondering what indie coat I should make and in the end realized I wanted something with shape (I.e. not a boxy fit or a bulky boxy fit with a tie waist) and a collar and buttons (I.e. not a wrap coat with no fastenings.) Much digging in the sewing Insta archives yielded #b6385 Lisette by Butterick and y’all, it is #sewlimited sizing and the instructions are bad…but the indie pattern world is not into fitted coats right now so what’s a girl to do?? See the last photo for the princess seaming in the back, “Dior dart” in the front is about an inch too high but we’ll forgive it. This is the #B6385 coat made with two beautiful wools I bought in NYC this past Spring with the @chicagosews crew.  Since it's a big four pattern, I had some trepidation about the instructions, particularly since I wanted to make some changes by using bound buttonholes and bagging out the lining. Preview of my coming winter coat. The plaid part has been cut out for months, hoping to get the flannel interlining cut out today (the plaid is wool- or at least mostly wool, but not super heavy), and the lining, and then maybe get started sewing. You know, so I can actually wear it in the winter. Half the fun of sewing is unexpected linings and bindings and facings. It’s kind of like a fun little hidden secret. (Plaid was a pass along from many years ago, the flannel is from a lined thrifted curtain - that became a Christmas dress for my youngest daughter, and the “satin” was a 50c. thrifted find. I made a vibrant wool winter coat to brighten up the dreary winter days! And it's even more fun on the inside! The outer fabric is a poppy red twill wool, and the lining is golden yellow poly-acetate with a floral pattern. The pattern started out as Buttericks B6385 and changed quite a bit along the way: extend back princess seams to shoulder and remove yoke, add back waistband, skip pocket flap, curve collar, and many many fit adjustments. Winter is coming....❄️❄️❄️❄️ It's almost time to wear #b6385. Boiled wool outer and poly lining are both from Mood. It took me a long time to finish hemming the lining (to the point where I didn't touch it for months), because...well...it was 90°F! And also the lining fabric frays really badly which is frustrating to deal with. I left out the shoulder pads, but I might go back and add them later. I made a coat! Butterick B6385 in the Lisette range. I’m pretty pleased with it, though the wool blend is a bit bouncy which makes all the seams a bit puffy. I love the topstitching detail and I’m very proud of my work on the set in sleeves. The lining is also glorious. I made this coat for my mum which was supposed to be a surprise for Christmas. I had to give it to her early as she was searching the shops for a new black coat! The pattern is Butterick B6385 view C with the funnel collar. Only modification was to bag the lining for a neater finish. I wanted a non-red spring/autumn/fall coat to wear with my red dresses and this beautiful camel coloured herringbone definitely fit the bill! I've worn it about a dozen times but it feels like Melbourne has FINALLY decided to warm up so it'll get more wear in autumn 😊 I started this project in April but didn't get around to finishing it until Sept - making your own clothes is the definition of slow fashion in my instance 😂😂 I found the pattern through @vanjocreates - when I finished my first coat in July 2020, she sent a pic of this coat pattern and I promptly fell in love! 😍 She's made a gorgeous version in wool you should check out 😊 I cut a size 12 on top and graded out to a 14, raised the waist by 2cm and because of all my issues with lower arm scythes, I raised the arm hole by 4cm!! When I sewed it together, I found it was a bit tight in the underarm and shaved off about 1cm. I reckon I'd raise it by only 2cm next time. I interlined everything which added a fair bit of bulk - I'm not 100% sure I'd do it again on such a stiff fabric but it means the coat is super warm. I will confess to being super confused about the lining instructions in the back until I put it together - it's a brilliant design feature and will ensure the lining lasts! (see pic 9). It's the first time I've done pockets with flaps and mitered corners. 2014: Was shopping one day and bought the Perfect Winter Coat - fitted, mid-thigh length, dusty mid-blue colour. 2016: Went to Adelaide for a weekend. Coming home I realised, somewhere over Warnambool, that I'd left the Perfect Winter Coat on the back of a chair at the airport. As soon as we landed I called the cafe, but the coat was gone. Stolen. 2016 - 2019: Searched every shop in Melbourne to find a new Perfect Winter Coat. Futile. 2019: After not sewing for 10 years, I found myself perusing some pattern books in Spotlight. Found the pattern to make a replacement for the new Perfect Winter Coat. Bought it. 2019: Scoured all the fabric shops in Melbourne looking for the perfect fabric to make the new Perfect Winter Coat. Nothing. 2019: Was in Adelaide again for a weekend, so scoured all their fabric shops for the perfect fabric for the Perfect Winter Coat. Dusty mid-blue wool. I found it, I bought it, I made it.  Just in time for summer. 2020 - 2021: Barely left the house in winter, and didn't wear The New Perfect Winter Coat. 2022 summer: Finally getting to wear The New Perfect Winter Coat.
