This is just pinned and not sewn yet, but this is the project I've been working on for a few months now. I've been hand embroidering a c. 1760 Robe a la Francaise and am getting into the home stretch. This is crewel work, using Appleton crewel wool yarn on heavyweight linen. This gown is based on a French gown in the @lacma collection. I used the high res photos the museum has and traced four of the crewel motifs as well as matching the colors. The pattern I'm using is @simplicity_creative_group 8578 by @americanduchess . This gown has been a dream of mine ever since I saw it in Fashioning Fashion. I can’t believe I missed the “big” prompt for #fallforcostume ! Well here’s an update on the black sacque gown, it’s pretty big isn’t it? This dress got its first night out yesterday when I went dancing with @seattle_cosplay . I had no idea there’s a dance studio in town that does historical dancing! This video just makes me laugh! This is the screen test for my #costumecollege2019 gala gown. Personally, I find it really tough to visualize mistakes in the gown just by looking in the mirror or by putting it on the mannequin. Often, things that look fine in the mirror look really different at a distance or in motion, so for the really important, fancy stuff I like to try and do a screen test; just a short, informal video to see what it will look like to other people and on camera. Guess who panicked and started over a week before costume college 😬 My original idea was to do a harlequin pattern in two sizes for the gown and petticoat, but halfway through sewing my thousandth square I realized that I absolutely hated the design and it was a total waste of time. You’re looking at TWO DAYS of work. I’ve been sewing non stop for 12+ hours a day. The new plan is a gold and cream look with a unicorn horn. The gala theme is “the opulent streets of Venice” so I’m doing a historical/fantasy look with a crystal studded mask. I’m actually almost done! Photos from the ball at Versailles (part one)! What an absolutely incredible event Fetes Galantes was- I still can’t believe it already came and went. I am so grateful for wonderful friends and such a magical experience to derp (not dance) in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. This is a formal ball requiring historical garb, so I made my panniers, stays, stomacher, petticoat and dress. The sack-back gown or robe à la française was a popular dress style for women in the 18th century- this was my first time making one! You guys I am so sick of working on nothing but Victorian stuff. I decided to take a break and work on something a little different, and do a robe a la francaise I’ve been meaning to get around to for a while. These are one of my favorite kinds of dresses to make, because they are so recognizable and so dramatic but once you’ve made one once or twice they aren’t as hard as you might think!
