Some frou-frou,  ruffles and gathers on the petticoat and the skirt to celebrate the spring sun rays we finally had today. I didn't wear these 18th century stays since a long time and found they could match with the pleated skirt I sewed in a romantic Toile de Jouy last year. It's a part of a complete historical outfit. We all have those projects that we really want to do.... one day... I saw this pattern for the first time maybe 2 years ago but I didn't know enough about sewing (still dont but I know more) Last year the pattern was on sale I bought it for that one day project. Ever since I have been touching, admiring and dreaming aboutit. During this pandemic I only made masks, so many that I had days where I didn't want to look at my sewing machine. So now I decided it's time to tackle this dream project and start with the bodice. I found this beautiful burgundy linen blend, some natural linen in the remnant department and 4 yards of unbleached muslin (always need muslin) I need to order the boning and some twill tape 😬 but I feel accomplished in taking just another step to making a 18th century dress. Stay tuned for when I actually start cutting 😬 and when I tackle the rest (including the under garments)

When taking time and energy on a sewing project which is important to my heart, I appreciate more and more all these little details which seem to be insignificant but give all the sentimental power to the final result. For this 18th century gown made with a chemise, a bump pad,  an overpetticoat, a boned vest and its overskirt the sentimental value is brought as by the origin of the furnitures - the fabric is a second hand gifted by my family, laces on sleeves and the silky fichu come from my grand-mother - as by the time the finishes made by hand took and the time it took to chose the correct places of each pattern piece to have the best of the design. And this is the transformed look - the cloak in the previous post hangs at the waist using a concealed inner belt, and is covered by the green skirt of this gown. The bodice pattern was heavily altered from Simplicity 8161 by @americanduchess. I replaced the stomacher lace up front with a lining that zips closed, and a false stomacher that is stitched to the bodice at one side and closes at the other side with hidden press stud tape. These modifications and lack of stays/period correct undergarments were chosen for practicality, due to it being a theatre costume. When the beauty of Nature is self-sufficient She offers her warm tons to wrap the human being with all her force. The countryside is a place where I like to feel humble and where all the senses are requested to the wellness. The quiet landscape opens its arms to welcome me so I can take my place as if I was in a painting. As usual it's in a historical outfit I love to cosplay as if I was borned under the paintbrush of painter artist.

#fallforcostume Day 17: Last The last outfit I finished was this 18th century-inspired dress, using Simplicity 8161 by @americanduchess . It was for Highland Weekend at the Ohio Renaissance Festival and I read that historically, Scots have loved wearing bright colors - to the extent that they were described as “peacocks!” Of course, it was also driven by the face that I fell in love with this striped linen the first time I saw it and was looking for any excuse to use it. I didn’t get any pockets made in time, so I had to resort to a basket for carrying my things! The diaphanous reflection of Claire Fraser's ghost in an antique mirror hidden behind an old historical wall of the manor of Lallibroch reminds the fragments of a romance and adventure time travel in a 18th century tale. Flowers will be dryed and the mirror be faded, the antique books pages will turn to a pale yellow and the perfume will evaporate but the romantic spirit of this ethereal moment will be preserved in an old coffer whom only one unique finely crafted key will open. Inspired by a painting of a 18th century countryside scenery of Wilhelm Menzler Casel I wanted to folllow the advice of Mary Poppins and jumped inside the painting to be myself the main character. No swans on the river like the original but I tryed to recreate the romantic cottagecore and peaceful atmosphere of this moment alone in nature with only the song of the birds and the river, the stones wall and my roses and peonies. To recreate this 18th century outfit I specifically sewed antique handmade lacy flowers on my loyal straw hat and customized simple modern shoes with Toile de Jouy and ribbons.
